You can adjust this recipe to your dogs taste or yours. I ate one and i could barely taste the peanut butter. I did a second recipe with 1 cup of peanut butter. I can taste the peanut butter and my dogs could really smell their treats baking and waited by the kitchen door.

If you would like to make these human consumable just add 1 teaspoon Baking Powder, 1/2 cup Sugar, 1/2 teaspoon Salt and one egg. Baking powder is not good for your dogs so please don’t feed the human recipe to the dogs.

Enjoy !!!

INGREDIENTS

  • 5 cups Oatmeal (regular old fashion)
  • 4 cups Water
  • 2 cups Carrots diced
  • 1 cup Beets (16 ounce) diced
  • 3 Eggs
  • 3 tablespoons Honey
  • 3 tablespoons Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Ground Black Pepper
  • 1/4 cup Virgin Olive Oil
  • 4 cups All Purpose Flour

Read the ingredients on all food you give to your dog. Real sugar only if you have to. Do not use any LOW calorie products ever. They contain ingredients that can KILL your dog.

Dangerous food and their ingredients that will kill your dog.

Directions

Grease a 1” x 15” x 21” sheet / cookie pan

Cover oatmeal in water. Soak the oats until almost all the water is absorbed. Approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Clean and cook the carrots for 15 minutes, let cool and dice. You can do these the day ahead of time.

Cook the carrots
Diced carrots

Rinse the beets well with cold water this will get a lot of sugar out. A 16 ounce can or jar of beets equals 1 cup diced. If you have all natural or cooked fresh beets are even better.

Store bought beets must be rinsed in cold water

Put the ingredients into bowl except flour and mix.

Mix the ingredients together
Mix the ingredients

Slowly add the flour while mixing.

Pour your dough onto the 1” x 15” x 21” sheet / cookie pan and smooth out completely from edge to edge equally. It might be a little sticky, so wet your spoon or spatula with water. Make sure you shake off excess water from the spatula.

Heat oven to 350’ degrees

Bake at 350’ degrees for 45 minutes.

Bake at 350 degrees

Remove from oven and cut into squares quickly with a pizza cutter. They will still be a little wet inside.

Return cookies to oven for 10 minutes. Check and see if they are drier. If not return to oven for 5 min.

Remove from oven if you would like a softer cookie. Have to remember our senior family members.

OR

If you want a super crispy cookie. Turn off the oven and leave it to cool inside. Approximately 3 hours in my oven. Then they are like rocks. But you actually cook the goodness out. Softer cookies retain more nutrients.

I make small cookies. I have various sized dogs. Choose the size that fits your needs.

2” x 2” inch cookies

Place cookies into containers. Your choice of sizes. If you only have one dog you might want to put them in several containers or baggies to freeze and take out as needed.

This is 60 cookies at 2” x 2” inch size

Keep a container of cookies in the refrigerator and take out what you’ll use daily.

Dogs, clementines, tangerines, mandarins and naval oranges

I can see the look on your face. What does all this citrus fruit have to do with a dog. The love of sweetness and great taste.

No joke, my dogs love mandarin oranges

I can be in the kitchen with the door shut and as soon as they get a whiff of that sweet sunshine they are at that door whining for the orange.

Yes your dogs can eat tangerines, clementines, mandarin’s and naval oranges in small amounts.

Great source of vitamin C, potassium and fiber.

There is a large amount of natural sugar so dogs who are diabetic should not be fed any of these fruits.

Fresh Hamburger Meat

Fresh chopped hamburger meat from your own kitchen doesn’t get any better. You choose your choice of meat and start chopping.

Most hamburger meat is a combination of several cows. So if one of them has an infection the whole bunch that was just made is infected. This way you know this is one cow.

London broil, top sirloin or chuck roast. Your choice. Just remember to have some fat on the piece of meat. Flavonoids are in the rendered fat. Yummy

I like to cut mine up into very small chunks. I leave my meat semi thawed, it’s easier to cut.

You can also use this for your dogs. If you can afford a Little treat every now and then. Don’t cook it. Leave it raw and mix with some slightly cooked veggies.

Get The Answers You Need About Your Pets and COVID-19 With Dr. Karen Becker

It’s important to keep in mind that at the present time this is an ever-evolving situation rife with competing theories and conspiracies, widespread mis- and disinformation, politics, etc. My goal today is to update you about what we know at this point regarding COVID-19 and furry family members.

Animals and COVID-19

According to veterinary publication dvm360, there are reports of animals being abandoned or killed because their owners fear they might harbor COVID-19.1 This is an absolutely unnecessary and tragic situation.

While it’s clear we’re still learning about this virus, at this time the WHO website maintains this particular type of coronavirus can be transmitted from human to human. From the OIE World Organisation for Animal Health Questions and Answers on the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) webpage:2

“Are animals responsible for COVID-19 in people?

The predominant route of transmission of COVID-19 appears to be from human to human.

Current evidence suggests that the COVID-19 virus has an animal source. Ongoing investigations are important for identifying the animal source (including species involved) and establishing the potential role of an animal reservoir in this disease. Yet, to date, there is not enough scientific evidence to identify that source or to explain the route of transmission from an animal source to humans.

Genetic sequence data reveals that the COVID-19 virus is a close relative of other CoV found circulating in Rhinolophus bat (Horseshoe Bat) populations. There is the possibility that transmission to humans involved an intermediate host.

Priorities for research to investigate the animal source were discussed by the OIE informal advisory group on COVID-19 and were presented at the WHO Global Research and Innovation Forum (11-12 February 2020) by the President of the OIE Wildlife Working Group. The outcomes from the discussion of the OIE informal advisory group on COVID-19 can be found at the link.”

Pets, COVID-19, and Confirmed Infection in One Dog in Hong Kong

Also from the OIE World Organisation for Animal Health Questions and Answers on the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) webpage:3

“What do we know about COVID-19 virus and companion animals?

The current spread of COVID-19 is a result of human to human transmission. To date, there is no evidence that companion animals can spread the disease. Therefore, there is no justification in taking measures against companion animals which may compromise their welfare.

The Veterinary Services of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China reported to OIE evidence that a dog had tested positive to the COVID-19 virus following close exposure to its owners who were sick with COVID-19 – see Immediate Notification (03/01/2020) and Follow-up report no.1 (03/08/2020).

The test, conducted by real time PCR, showed the presence of genetic material from the COVID-19 virus. The dog [a 17-year-old Pomeranian] was not showing any clinical signs of the disease.

There is no evidence that dogs play a role in the spread of this human disease or that they become sick. Further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19 virus. The OIE will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

There is no evidence to support restrictions to movement or trade of companion animals.”

According to a post on March 9th in PetfoodIndustry.com:

“Veterinarians confirmed that the coronavirus had infected the dog too after taking nasal, oral and rectal swabs, along with fecal samples. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) published a report of the emerging disease, listing this case as the first known in dogs.

Nasal and oral samples tested positive for the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the name of virus responsible for COVID-19. However, the dog hasn’t shown any outward signs of illness. Follow-up oral and nasal samples taken on March 2 and 5 continues to test positive.

Doctors and veterinarians don’t know if the COVID-19 virus has the potential to be zoonotic, or transmitted from dogs to people.

Doctors don’t know if the dog got the virus directly from its owner, or through an intermediary species. Likewise, doctors don’t know how the virus was transmitted to the dog, whether by airborne particles, direct contact or bodily fluids.

In Hong Kong, health authorities quarantine mammalian pets from households with confirmed human cases of COVID-19 and place the animals under veterinary surveillance for 14 days, according to the report.”4

Why Pet Parents Should NOT Hit the Panic Button

Many veterinarians have called for calm after the announcement, reminding owners this doesn’t mean dogs can get sick from the virus or transmit it back to humans. Panic makes people do foolish, regrettable things, which is what has occurred in Wuhan. From a March 4th post in the Whole Dog Journal:

“Tragically, within days [of the report of the single infected dog], there were reports of a record number of dogs and other pets being abandoned in China’s streets, and thousands of pets being surrendered to overwhelmed animal shelters — despite the fact that there is no indication that the COVID-19 virus is zoonotic.

Time magazine reports that the crisis for pet dogs and cats is the worst in Wuhan, the capital city of the Hubei province where the first cases of COVID-19 are believed to have emerged. Time reports that when a person in Wuhan is found to have COVID-19, the authorities kill all animals in the home as a precaution.

This report was corroborated by a reporter for the BBC (British news service):

‘Volunteers in China say they’re struggling to keep up with the number of animals being abandoned as the country battles the virus outbreak. More than 2,000 people in China have died and more than 78,000 infections have been reported in the country.

Pet owners who fall sick or are caught up in quarantine can’t take their animals with them, and despite reassurance from the World Health Organization that animals can’t carry the virus, others are being dumped.’”5

The Centers for Disease Control is now advising people with COVID-19 to avoid close contact with their pets, but on February 28th, Dr. Jonathan Ball at the University of Nottingham has called the widespread panic about the news “incredibly irresponsible”:

“There is no evidence that the human novel coronavirus can infect dogs and it would be incredible for a virus to make so many species jumps in such a short space of time!

We have to differentiate between real infection and just detecting the presence of a virus – these are very different – and the fact that the test result was weakly positive would suggest that this is environmental contamination or simply the presence of coronavirus shed from the human contact that has ended up in the dog’s samples.

In truth this is incredibly irresponsible because the last thing we need to do is create mass hysteria about the possibility of dogs being infected, and therefore potentially transmitting this virus when there is absolutely no evidence for this whatsoever.”6

If You’re a Pet Parent, Do This Instead

From the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) COVID-19 website:

“The precise meaning of the positive test result from the one dog remains unclear and further evaluation is ongoing. Hong Kong officials said that dog continues to show no clinical signs of illness, remains under quarantine and is being cared for, and will continue to be monitored and tested.

We will keep you updated you as we learn more. At this time, the CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) say there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, spread COVID-19.

As always, it’s a good idea to wash your hands after being around animals, and animal owners should continue to include pets and other animals in their emergency preparedness planning, including keeping a two-week supply of food and medications on hand.”7

If someone in your household is diagnosed with the virus and you feel additional precautions are necessary, the following is from the CDC:

“Considerations for COVID-19 patients under home care and isolation who have pets or other animals:

People with COVID-19 should be advised to tell their public health point of contact that they have pets or other animals in their home.

In addition to other prevention measures, people with COVID-19 who are identified by public health officials as requiring home care and isolation should be advised to limit interaction with pets and other animals.

Specifically, while these people are symptomatic, they should maintain separation from pets as they would with other household members, and avoid direct contact with pets, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. Service animals should be permitted to remain with their handlers.

If possible, a household member should be designated to care for pets in the home. If the individual in home care and isolation must care for pet(s), including service animals, they should ensure they wash their hands before and after caring for pets and wear a facemask while interacting with pets, until they are medically cleared to return to normal activities.”8

Nature to the Rescue?

The race is on to not only learn more about how COVID-19 affects other species but for biotech companies to produce a slew of pharmaceutical products in response to this latest disease outbreak.

Interestingly, the most accessible and effective treatment may already exist at your local health food store. Dr. Michel Chrétien’s Montreal laboratory is testing quercetin, an all-natural extract from plants, and its derivatives, as a possible “broad spectrum” antiviral medication. Clinical trials began in China a few weeks ago.9

Dr. Mercola has also published important recent articles on this topic, on February 24th: Vitamin C Works for Sepsis. Will It Work for Coronavirus? and on March 9th: Essential Nutrition to Protect Yourself From Coronavirus

Is Sparky Still Perky?

As the BIG BOOM for “natural dog foods” roll out of the factories, what are the true nutrional values? Not all are as healthy as they claim. Food dyes that are dangerous for humans are coloring your pets food. The regulations are very bleak for pet foods. There is no requirement that pet food products have pre-market approval by the FDA. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-food-feeds/pet-food

As you can see from the recall list several have been recalled for various facts over the past year. Make sure you do a check once in awhile on your pets food. Or sign up for the FDA Recall Notice by email. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/safety-health/recalls-withdrawals

If you don’t know yet that you should be reading the labels on your dog food as well as your food, this is your wake up call. Did you know that awesome colored dog food that is apealing to you could be very dangerous to your pet. The dyes I have listed can have an adverse reactions on your dogs health.

Its not only the pretty colored kibble. Canned dog foods and treats are also included.

We all know that humans need to avoid Red #3 and that it has been linked to cancer. As a result of efforts begun in the 1970s, in 1990 the U.S. FDA had instituted a partial ban on erythrosine, citing research that high doses have been found to cause cancer in rats. A 1990 study concluded that “chronic erythrosine ingestion may promote thyroid tumor formation in rats via chronic stimulation of the thyroid. In June 2008, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) petitioned the FDA for a complete ban on erythrosine in the United States, but the FDA has not taken any further action.

That is just one of the dangerous dyes for all your pets.

Check out these other dangerous dyes. We need to pay close attention to the labels.

Red #40: Allura Red AC is a red azo dye that goes by several names, including FD&C Red 40. The study found “a possible link between the consumption of these artificial colours and a sodium benzoate preservative and increased hyperactivity”.

Yellow #5 & #6: Tartrazine appears to cause the most allergic and intolerance reactions of all the azo dyes. It also has been known to cause food intolerances. Tartrazine has been used in 3D Printing as a biocompatible photoblocker for generating transparent hydrogels with complex inner structures.

I hope this information provides you with the power of knowledge on these dangerous food dyes in pet foods. Eliminate the colored food from your pets diet and go with the plain colored food.

Just remember… It’s up to us for the care and health of our family pets.

GOT RATS??? A Dog’s Lifesaver

This dog was lucky someone was there who knew what the signs where for rat poison.
I would have never guessed.

Hope this never happens to your dog, but if it does here’s what to do for emergency and can’t get to the vet…. Raw eggs… I had never heard of this remedy until now. I have fed my dogs charcoal for the light case from licking the rat. I have never witnessed severe rat poison poisoning in any animal. That poor baby going through those convulsions was heart wrenching.

Get them to the vet as soon as possible.

The Struggle For These Animals Are “REAL”

As you all know by now, on the Big Island of Hawaii on May 3, 2018 we had an volcano eruption. Leilani Estates was the first Subdivision to be affected. Many animals at that time were left behind. Some had no choice but to leave their pets.

This community has come together with many volunteers. They have activated their own search and rescue efforts. The Rescue Agency pay for all the gas, food and any other expenses. Now with donations starting to come in has made a big improvement for the rescue animals. People have taken animals into their homes for temporary housing. Everyone is pitching in where they can. The Rescue Agency’s are full. Some have erected temporary structures to house the animals.

June 5, 2018 UPDATE: There have been 4 of new areas added for the animals to be rescued.

All Of Hawaii’s Animal Rescue Agency’s are still rescuing the Animals Left Behind in this Crisis.

A Special Shout Out To All Of the Hawaii and Mainland Rescue Agency’s For Pitching In and Helping.

LINKS FOR FUND RAISERS

EMERGENCY DONATIONS NEEDED FOR HAWAII

The Community and the Shelters are overwhelmed and need your help today.

Hawaii Lava Flow Animal Rescue

The Hawaiʻi Lava Flow Animal Rescue Network (HLFARN) was created to serve as an informational hub for those needing assistance with pets and animals on farms during the 2018 eruption of Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. But it has become so much more than that. HLFARN has blossomed from a group of strangers into an Ohana; a family of people whose love for animals has taken them into the path of an erupting volcano to rescue pets and farm animals that have been left behind.

We are a grassroots movement to help the residents displaced from Leilani Estates and lower Puna to evacuate their beloved companions and friends. As a group of volunteers, we have rescued over 200 animals thus far. We continue to help residents, their furry friends, and stray animals every day; rain or shine.

The continuing eruption has destroyed homes and threatened lives, including the lives of dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, birds, fish, chickens, goats, sheep, cows, and horses. A plethora of animals have been abandoned or relocated to foster care while their owners figure out where they are going to live. Foster families have taken on the burden of caring for these animals without a second thought as to who will feed and care for them.

We are asking for donations to help our field volunteers acquire safety gear, respirators, and to help alleviate the cost of transportation. Your donation will help to rescue, provide food, carriers, crates, and medical attention to many pets and farm animals. We would also like to help those who are relocating with crates for airline travel. Your donation will support the long and tedious process of caring for rescued animals, as well as some support to evacuated families who are dealing with one of the most difficult times of their lives. Without your help, and the help of our volunteers, these animals would have likely perished. Your donation will save lives and help keep families together.

Mahalo for taking the time to read and share our mission in saving as many animals as we can.

Beautiful Blue Skies today, Nothing like Yesterday

WOW What a Day, Night.

I have experienced Kilauea now for the 4th episode.

I must say this has been the most exhilarating and at times down right scary.

Not Knowing what to expect next. I don’t even think any of the scientists even knew what to expect.

I am 15 miles away from the Leilani Eruption and still it is very loud.

Night after night sounded like you were in a war zone.

Explosion after explosion.

Gassey, Howly, Growling and creaking from the ground. It still continues today May 18, 2018.

The sounds are hard to describe. If you have been to Disneyland in California and have been on the Pirates of the Caribbean and the sounds are like that. That is the best I know how to describe it. It’s all night and all day, with no end to the ride. It’s the night time sounds that get to you…. Here listen to this for awhile… Excellent video in the trenches by Ikaika Marzo https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo

Then Kilauea Exploded  @4:15 am May 17, 2018. Ash and Smoke filled the skies.  I have seen the Vog in its intense stage. This was so much more dense, dark and the Scariest massive ash cloud I had ever seen. I have never seen anything in person like this.

I scrambled to close the windows and get the fans on for the dogs. It was very warm out. It had been nice and cool during the nights prior to all this activity. Actually we had just had a few intense rain showers. Some of the other islands flooded from the rain storm that had come over the islands. We all thank god for the moisture we had received prior.

We have a local Superman Ikaika Marzo. He has been there giving the real story since the day it broke out. Live action in the trenches reporter. He should be paid. When the CD is giving messages fissures have stopped proof comes that they are still flowing. It has been his reporting that kept the locals informed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUCt1UcaCuc

So now today is blue skies in Keaau. Leilani as of this morning had 22 live fissures with a river of pahoehoe. Pahoehoe is a very fast moving liquid lava. Unlike the slow moving lava that Leilani Estates eruption had been up until Yesterday May 17, 2018.

“PUNA STRONG”. The community had the community’s back as soon as this happened. Locals mobilized and set up. God Bless This Community of Strong People. Thank You to All of the Volunteers who help this community… You are AWESOME…

Hawaii Volcano, Acid Rain and Your Drinking Water

MORE About Hawai`i’s Acid Rain for Catchment Tanks

BY: Trisha Macomber, MPH, UH College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, Cooperative Extension Services

Because many questions have come up lately about the pH (a measure of acidity or alkalinity) in our catchment systems, we want to give you more detail on how acid rain can affect you through catchment water.

Different locations may require different treatment

The pH scale measures how acidic or basic something is. This logarithmic scale goes from 0-14. Numbers below 7 are considered acidic and above 7 are basic. Seven is neutral. Rain usually has a pH in the mid to high 5’s. Less than 5.6 is considered “acid rain.” On the mainland, acid rain is usually associated with pollution from burning fossil fuels that release excessive nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. In Hawai`i, the biggest cause of acid rain is from our volcanoes, which release sulfur dioxides and trioxides into the air. These oxides, in a series of reactions in the atmosphere, combine with water molecules and form dilute acids which return to earth as acid rain. Usually Hawai`i’s acid rain contains sulfuric acid where other types of air pollution can create nitric acid.

Why does acid rain matter?

Normally rocks, soil and vegetation act as buffers and neutralize the acid. If the pH is really low, it can damage delicate vegetation and cause ecological damage. In rainwater catchment systems, acid rain can be a problem because it can leach metals and other surface and tank coatings and deposit them into the water. This is a particular problem in older homes—typically built before 1979—where roofs might have lead paint, nails, flashings and solder.

Is acid rain a health hazard?

Drinking acidic rainwater isn’t normally a problem. In fact, we drink a lot of acidic drinks and food. However, excessive acid could affect your teeth. Just like drinking soda pop or sucking on lemons, if you constantly expose your teeth to acid conditions, their protective enamel coating will be compromised.

Our biggest concern about drinking acidic rainwater is when heavy metals and other leached materials get into the water. A very common problem is when copper from water pipes make blue/green stains on our sinks and tubs. Sometimes severe leaching will cause pipes to leak.

Having some copper in our water is not necessarily a health hazard because our bodies need some copper. Many people’s diets in the US are deficient in copper and vitamin C inhibits the body’s intake of copper. However, if you suspect your copper levels are high, especially if you can taste the copper in your water, it may be too high and you should get your water tested.

Where to get your water tested for copper and lead

The cost of copper and lead water testing is partially subsidized by the Department of Health’s Safe Drinking Water Branch. On the island of Hawaii, call 933-0401 to make arrangements. You can also do inexpensive testing for lead and copper through the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, however these laboratories are not certified for drinking water, so if you use them, you should only use the results as a reference (for example, your levels are high or low), rather than focusing on a specific number.

Charcoal or carbon filters can also remove heavy metals

You can add filters made from charcoal or carbon blocks to remove lead, copper and other similar contaminants from the water. These filters should have a list of what contaminants they remove on the outside packaging. We also recommend that the product you buy contain an NSF International seal, which verifies the manufacturer’s claims.

How to get pH testing

If you want to test the pH of your water, you can buy simple pH test strips from chemical supply stores or from the UH CTAHR Hilo office. PH testing kits are also available from swimming pool supply stores and some hardware stores. In addition, there are local water laboratories that can do pH testing, if you prefer to bring a water sample to a lab, call the lab first to learn how to collect your water appropriately.

How to raise the pH levels in your catchment tank

If you need to raise the pH in your water, dissolve about 1-2 boxes of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in a bucket of water and add it to the tank every 2-4 weeks. You may need more, depending on the acidity of your water and size of your tank. Too much baking soda will make your water start to feel very soft or slimy. The baking soda also adds salt into your water, just like commercial water softeners do, and may be a problem for people on restricted salt diets.

Another product you can add is food-grade calcium carbonate granules, which are available from chemical supply companies and some local suppliers. Large solids of calcium carbonate, like limestone rocks, are not effective because the sulfur coats the surfaces and does not wash off. With limestone granules, the surface area is much larger, so they will work longer.

Concrete hollow building blocks or tiles are not effective as their surface gets coated quickly and they are not food-grade, so they should not be added to catchment water.

ARE YOU FRIEND OR FOE TO YOUR DOG?

Proper care of your pets 101 for vacation time.

Are you leaving for a weekend getaway?

Who will be taking care of your 4 legged family members?

This is a tough one unless you have a good friend or you already have a sitter. I always say “Plan this one out good”.   If your dogs are comfortable with their sitter, you will be at ease. It is very stressful for all involved, especially our pets. They don’t understand what is going on, unless you travel often.

Before you leave

Show the sitter where the pet food and treats are, and where the pets sleep.

Make sure you write a list of basic commands you use with your pet? Giving the sitter the right words to use is important for communication with your pets.

Give them a list with pet rules: Are they allowed on the furniture? When do pets get treats, and when should they be reprimanded?

Let the sitter know your pets habits. Like, do they hang inside the house or out or both. Or if your dog barks often, or whether barking is for “stranger danger” and what to do if the dog continues to bark.

Let your sitter know if any of your pets are aggressive and for what reason. (toys, food, treats or the mail delivery person)

Lay out on the counter any cleaning supplies they made need in case a pet has an accident in the house. You never know.

List: what time your pets need to be walked or are they “free rangers” out in the yard. Most important do you need to close the doggie door and limit their access if this is so.

List: Feeding times and how much food to give them.

If there is more than one pet to be fed, can they all eat together in a group or do they need to be separated. Most important do you need to do separation prior to mixing their food?

Make sure to leave emergency contact information for the pets.

  • What is the name and number of the veterinarian?
  • Is there an emergency animal clinic nearby?
  • What should they do in case of an emergency.
  • Also leave a number of close friend or relative in the area.

Just make sure that your pet adores who ever may watch and care for your pets.

What do we really know about Alternative Medicine?

Sometimes it’s hard to get through the door

Stepping Out Of the Comfort Zone

Sometimes we need to open the windows on our boxes and look out. If we are brave enough we can open the door and step out of the box.

We have been programmed into staying within our boxes. It’s safe and comfortable and society says it’s “the RIGHT thing to do”. With scientists revealing more treatments involving alternative medicine, it’s time we took a look outside. Every day new technology and research is being accomplished you won’t hear about in main stream news.

The struggle has been hard with Alternative Medicine research and technology being suppressed for so many years. Throughout this time we have been told to think it’s a hoax, these doctors are quacks and they are just out to take your money. Yes, in some cases I will agree. But there are real Holistic/Alternative treatments that work and honest doctors providing the treatment.

How do you think the Chinese survived for so many years? Still to this day they rely on Chinese Medicine, herbs, roots and other natural ingredients to make medicines.

If you think about it, if we all just understood how pharmaceutical companies derived their medicines. It would be a financial downfall for the pharmaceutical companies. If only we would ALL look outside that door. We could really change health care as we westerners know it.

For an example is the Medical Marijuana medicine. Big Pharmaceutical companies have lobbied against any form of legalization. They are at their wits end because they cannot patent marijuana and they cannot come up with the absolute formula that works the same as the real thing.

Marijuana is a plant that grows natural on earth and goes back in time as a healing medicine. Pharmaceutical CBD and THC therapies are synthetic.

There are plants on earth that cure illnesses. This is how Big Pharma came up with all the BIG $$$ synthetic medicine, but one drawback is Synthetics come with all the side effects… Some medicines have over 50 pages of CAUTION SIDE EFFECTS.

Natural, there is nothing like the real thing to heal the human body.

I use to be very skeptical, until I actually experienced alternative medicine work. Not cancer but other illnesses. If I would have never opened that door and stepped outside, I would have stayed closed minded to alternative remedies and cures.

I just wanted you to know my eyes are wide open and looking at things differently these days, that’s all. Let’s Explore Our World and Everything It Has To Offer…

Vinegar, All the Wonderful Things It Can Do!

I recommend you that you drink the Vinegar Cocktail Everyday.

Vinegar, All the Wonderful Things It Can Do!

The greatest gift that will save you from dieting grows on trees and is then fermented into a beautiful bounty of goodness for your body.

Vinegar can do everything from relieving muscle pain from exercise, balancing pH levels, soothing sore throats, and normalizing weight and helping to maintain levels of cholesterol already in the normal range.

Externally, it is effective in supporting healthy skin and hair. Use it topically to give yourself a vinegar facial for toning or clearing up non-cystic acne and exfoliating dry dull skin. Gently rub your skin with a soft cotton ball dipped in vinegar and watch your skin glow!

Bragg USDA Gluten Free Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, With the Mother 16 ounces

It’s also great for animals.

Use it as a soothing after-bath rinse for cats and dogs to eliminate dry skin. Just as with people, it is also helpful in older animals. The high acidity and powerful enzymes in apple cider vinegar also supports a healthy scalp. Try a rinse of apple cider vinegar after you wash your hair. It gives hair incredible shine and bounce!

It’s so easy to incorporate vinegar into your daily diet.

Get healthy and loose that extra waistline you have been carry around.

When you wake up in the morning just make a delicious cocktail using 2 teaspoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar, and if you need a sweetener, use organic honey, 100% maple syrup, or molasses to taste. If you are diabetic, use the sweet substitute stevia. I recommend you use only distilled water.

Bragg USDA Gluten Free Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, With the Mother 16 ounces

This “Bragg Healthy Cocktail” is designed to flush out wastes that are clogging the organs of elimination, the bowels, lungs, skin, and the kidneys. Take it at least twice a day, and you will start to see changes like increased energy, soft skin, and decreased muscle and joint aches from exercise.

Make sure you use raw, organic vinegar, never dead, distilled vinegar because the natural enzymes, minerals, and nutrients are destroyed in the distilling process. Any vinegar that is clear and has no “mother” (the strand-like substance in the bottom of the bottle) has no nutritional value. Natural raw vinegar should be pungent, with a rich, brownish color and a visible “mother.”

Drinking apple cider vinegar daily, and eating a largely fresh, organic, vegetarian diet, along with following a simple fitness program, will change your life so dramatically you will never go back to your old ways! Get fit, get healthy, and live a long and happy life!

You May Ask: What is Natural Apple Cider Vinegar?

Different from the refined and distilled vinegar usually found in supermarkets, Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made from fresh, crushed, organically grown apples and allowed to mature in tanks, which boosts its natural fermentation qualities. When mature, it contains a web-like substance, called “mother” that becomes visible when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light.

Just a few more plus’s…

Ohh My Head & Tummy Are you Hungover?

Apple Cider Vinegar is believed to help the Liver dissolve poisonous matter, like to much alcohol. It also balances the pH levels and tops up any deficiency in minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron, which your alcohol soaked body is craving.

Are your finger nails brittle and soft?

Try Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar. It all starts from the inside. You could be missing trace minerals or your PH is off. The nutrients and acids naturally found in ACV are not only great for strengthening nails, they are also known to heal and prevent microbial infections that sometimes cause excessive breakage and yellowing. You can make one of the Bragg ACV recipes or purchase bottled Bragg Healthy cocktail mixes.

Ear Mite Treatments: Natural Remedies for Ear Mites

Ear Mite Treatment: Natural Remedies for Ear Mites

How to Treat Ear Mites In 10 Easy Steps

Ear mites pose an itchy aggravation for puppies and their people. This parasite also can travel outside of the pup’s body, making it very contagious to other pets in the home. If one pet has ear mites, all of the other dogs, cats, rabbits and ferret friends also need treatment. Your veterinarian can provide this service after diagnosing the mite, but that can get pricey. It’s also helpful for you to learn how to medicate your puppy.

Here’s how to cut the cost and treat puppy ear mites at home.

Ear Mite Medications

The ears are treated by flushing away the debris and mites using an insecticide similar to that used in flea treatments. The medication is often suspended in a bland medium, like mineral oil, which when squirted into the ear helps suffocate the bugs not killed outright by the insecticide.

The solution also floats debris out of the ear canal as the ear base is gently massaged. A number of commercial products are available for treating ear mites; ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.

Home Made Medications

Holistic veterinarians agree that commercial products work well. But puppies sick with ear mites may have other common health challenges that need treatment. It may be less stressful to shoo away the bugs with more natural treatments. Cleaning the ears with soothing solutions is the first step.

  • Antiseptic Tea Rinse. Green tea is a natural antiseptic. It can be used to flush out all the ear might debris—that crumbly brown/black stuff that clogs the puppy’s ear canal. Steep a tablespoon of green tea leaves in a cup of hot water for three or four minutes, and then strain it. Let it cool to room temperature before using once a day for a month.
  • Oil Treatment. Oil helps sooth sore ears, and also can float debris out. Oil also can suffocate the mites. Holistic vets say it doesn’t really matter what kind of oil you use, although some recommend almond or olive oil. Avoid tea tree oil, though, because it can be toxic for cats and smaller pets like young puppies. For the best benefit, crush a couple garlic cloves in a cup of the oil and let it marinate overnight. Garlic naturally kills bacteria that might develop secondary to the mite infection. Remember to remove the garlic before using the oil to treat your puppy’s ears though. You’ll need to treat the ears with the oil/garlic solution daily for at least a month.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. Add 1 teaspoon to a 8 ounces, put in spray bottle and spray twice a day for 10 days.

The High Dose Oral Vitamin C Protocol for Cancer (and Nearly Every Other Ailment)

Detox Your Life, Natural Therapies

The High Dose Oral Vitamin C Protocol for Cancer (and Nearly Every Other Ailment)

I’m really excited about this post because I’m sharing some really cool stuff about Vitamin C that many people do not know. Or maybe I’m wrong and everyone already knows this but me… We’ll see.

This is a powerful anti-cancer protocol and even if you don’t have cancer, you can use this method to determine how much toxic stress is going on inside your body and how high doses of Vitamin C could dramatically improve your health.

Ok so we all now that Vitamin C (asorbic acid) is good for you right? The body doesn’t produce it, so it has to come from food.

You’ve probably also heard that a severe Vitamin C deficiency leads to scurvy. Early symptoms of scurvy are malaise and lethargy. That’s basically a “general feeling of being unwell” along with tiredness or exhaustion. (Does this sound like you?) After a few months comes shortness of breath and bone pain. Further down the road is muscle pain, skin sores, gum disease, loose teeth, wounds not healing, dry mouth, dry eyes, and emotional problems. In the late stages comes jaundice, edema, fever, convulsions, and eventually death.

Sounds fun right? Fortunately scurvy can be CURED with lemons, limes, oranges, and any other Vitamin C containing food.

Don’t Forget to watch the video below

Here’s where it gets interesting…

The cure for scurvy was first published in 1617 in The Surgeon’s Mate by English military surgeon John Woodall. And it was completely ignored by the medical community.

In 1753 (136 years later) naval surgeon James Lind published his discovery in, A Treatise of The Scurvy, which was also ignored. The medical establishment insisted that the testimonials of eating citrus fruit to reverse scurvy were merely “anecdotal” and not based on “scientific evidence”.  Sound familiar?

Fortunately James Lind persevered and about 50 years later citrus fruit was finally accepted and used for the prevention and treatment of scurvy on sailing vessels. So, in summary:

The cure for scurvy was ignored for nearly 200 years after its discovery.

Nutrition and natural therapies are still ignored modern medicine. In fact I’d be willing to bet that if you went to see a doctor with some of the symptoms of scurvy that I listed above, you be subjected to a barrage of expensive tests, misdiagnosed, prescribed pharmaceutical drugs, and subjected to treatments for some other disease. This happens all the time. Earlier this year my good friend Tony was told that he probably had cancer or AIDS, turns out it was viral pneumonia. Can you imagine?

But I digress… Let’s get back to Vitamin C.

Here are some common whole food sources of Vitamin C:

Oranges, Kiwi, Canteloupe, Papaya, Strawberries, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kale and Peppers.

“Super foods” with the highest concentration of Vitamin C on planet earth are:

Camu Camu Fruit, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), and Acerola Cherries. In that order.

Vitamin C supports nearly every system in your body: your adrenals, your immune system, your cardiovascular system, and more. Perhaps the most important is that it is a neutralizer of free radicals.

There’s been tons of ground-breaking research on high-dose Vitamin C’s powerful healing and anti-cancer effects by the likes of Fred Klenner MD, Irwin Stone, Linus Pauling, and Ewan Cameron. I don’t have time to get into their stories but I wanted to a least give credit where it’s due. Google them in your spare time. There’s a fascinating Vitamin C phenomenon that most of us don’t know about.

The sicker and/or more toxic you are, the more free radicals you have in your body, and as a result, the more Vitamin C your body will absorb and use. The body keeps a small reserve of Vitamin C available for use when there is increased internal demand, but when you are sick this is quickly depleted.

You may have also heard (or experienced) that if you take too much Vitamin C by mouth you get the runs, aka “chach” which is our family’s abbreviation (and code word) for

“Diarrhea Cha Cha Cha”.

A healthy person can take anywhere from 4-15 grams (4,000-15,000 mg) of Vitamin C in a 24 hour period without getting the runs, but a sick person can tolerate anywhere from 10-20 times more. I’m talking even as much as 100-200 grams per day by mouth.

Have you ever taken Vitamin C when you had a cold and it didn’t help? This is probably because you didn’t take near enough.

Here’s where it gets ridiculous… If you ate something that contained “100% of the USRDA (Recommended Daily Allowance ) of Vitamin C” that seems pretty good right?

It’s not.

The USRDA for Vitamin C is only 75 mg. That’s MILLIGRAMS. A normal healthy person can absorb and use between 4,000-15,000 milligrams per day. So the USRDA is way off on this one. 75 mg is basically what someone decided is the absolute minimum amount to keep you from getting scurvy. This is not an amount that promotes health and optimal body function.

One orange has about 150mg of Vitamin C, about 2 times more than the USRDA. And 1 teaspoon of Camu Camu Powder has about 15 times the USRDA of Vitamin C!

Even though you may not have scurvy, I think it’s safe to assume that many of us may not be getting enough Vitamin C in our diets, the lack of which could be a contributor to

  1. a) feeling lousy or b) serious disease.

High Dose Oral Vitamin C Therapy is taking the maximum dose your body can tolerate before you get the runs. This requires finding your threshold and then backing off a little bit for your daily dose. The clinical term is “titrating to bowel tolerance”.

As some of you know, one of the therapies I used to help my body heal from cancer was Vitamin C IV Therapy, which is a common practice in the natural/alternative cancer treatment world. This involves sitting in chair in a practitioner’s office for two hours with an IV drip containing 50 grams or more of Vitamin C. And while this is a very effective method to get a massive dose of Vitamin C without reaching bowel tolerance and to promote healing in the body, it is time consuming and expensive. I was paying $120 a pop, cash money. And in order for it to be the most effective you need to do it 2-3 times per week for many weeks.

My friend Bill, who’s healing his prostate cancer naturally, turned me on to a simple do-it-yourself Oral Vitamin C Protocol that he was put on by an underground cancer treatment expert whose name I cannot use publicly. Bill initially reached bowel tolerance taking 60 grams per day. After two months his tolerance was down to less than 30 grams per day. That’s a very good sign.

The Vitamin C Toxicity Test & Protocol

This is something everyone should do. Now clearly no one wants diarrhea on purpose, but in this case it can give you some immediate feedback about your internal condition. And it’s super cheap to do!

The simple way to find your tolerance is to take 2-3 grams of Vitamin C powder or crystals (ascorbic acid) every two hours mixed in 8 oz of water. That will give you about 12-18 grams the first day. Make sure you keep track of your doses. Vitamin C powder is highly concentrated. 1 teaspoon is usually about 5 grams of Vitamin C.

The goal is to find your 24 hour limit, not your single dose limit.

The half-life of Vitamin C in the body is about 30 minutes. That means about an hour after you take Vitamin C, your body has used up most of it. So an important key to this protocol is to keep your body saturated with C all day. Dosing every 1-2 hours is ideal.

If you reach bowel tolerance in the first 24 hours, reduce the total dose by 20-25% and continue to take that amount every day  as a maintenance dose (this may be for several days or weeks) until you reach bowel tolerance again at that level. Then reduce by 20% again and continue with that dose until you hit bowel tolerance, and so on.

It works the opposite of what you would expect because you don’t build up a tolerance. The healthier you become, the lower your bowel tolerance for Vitamin C will go.

If you reach bowel tolerance at 10-15 grams or less per day, you’re considered to be in very good shape health wise.

If you follow the steps above and do not reach bowel tolerance the first day, continue to up the dose each day until you get there. If you are seriously sick you may need to dose every hour or 1/2 hour as indicated in the chart below. As you get close to bowel tolerance you will get gassy and should have soft stool. That means you’re very close to your body’s limit and should reduce your dosage a bit.

Here’s a dosage chart from the late and legendary Dr. Robert Cathcart MD, who treated 9000+ patients with Vitamin C!

Something else worth noting in the above chart: If you are under chronic stress or engage in athletic activities like running, weight training, etc. you are likely to have an increased need for Vitamin C and your tolerance will be higher. Even if you are healthy.

Dr. Cathcart also notes that low dose vitamin c had basically no effect, but high dose vitamin c, when taken at 80-90% of bowel tolerance, produced a significant and dramatic reduction of symptoms in his patients.

Experiments

When I first tried this protocol a couple months ago I didn’t reach bowel tolerance until I got to around 34 grams. I worked my way up to taking 12 grams three times per day. I have no idea why my tolerance was that high. I workout 3-5 days per week which would increase my tolerance but perhaps I also had something going on internally… who knows?

Earlier this morning I took 7.5 grams and it produced bowel tolerance for me a couple hours later which actually interrupted my work on this post. Clearly my tolerance is down and if Dr. Cathcart is right, my internal health has improved.

Another one: My kids came home with colds from school two weeks ago. Then my wife got it. One morning I started to feel cold symptoms as well so I took 10 grams of Vitamin c. I felt great all day. Then close to bedtime I started to feel the symptoms again so I took another 10 grams. I did this every day for about a week. I would feel the symptoms in the morning, but I quickly crushed them with 10 grams of vitamin c.  Some days I would take a dose around lunch time as well if I remembered. I was taking 20-30 grams per day for most of the week, I felt good, I was close to bowel tolerance, and the cold never developed. Since then, I’ve done this more times than I can count. Works every time.

What form to take?

Vitamin C comes in several different forms: pure asorbic acid and buffered with minerals.

Buffered C contains mineral salts like calcium asorbate, magnesium asorbate, and sodium asorbate. Buffered C is more alkaline but the excess minerals could be problematic if you are taking mega doses.

I compared three different types (buffered and pure asorbic acid) to see if they had different effects but my tolerance was basically the same for all three. Having said that…

Solaray Vitamin C Powder is 100% pure asorbic acid so it’s extremely tart and citric. Vitamin Shoppe Buffered C-Complex tastes chalky, not citric.

Thompson C Buffered Crystals is buffered with calcium asorbate, it’s citric but not as strong as the pure crystals.

Dr. Cathcart recommends taking pure asorbic acid for the high dose oral protocol. Dr. Thomas Levy recommends sodium asorbate. I think it makes sense to rotate between different types.

*After writing this post it was brought to my attention that most of the asorbic acid in vitamin C powder is made in China from GMO corn. If that is a concern for you, there are several brands of non-GMO vitamin C powders.

Once Upon A Midnight Cowgirl

April 4, 2017

Well we have exciting news at our place.

A mother Pig lost her baby and it wandered onto my land and survived the dog pack. Amazing she must belong on this aina..

I let the dogs out for one last run at 11:15pm. About 20 minutes into this moment of peace and quiet came barking and squealing. I really didn’t know why my dogs were barking so crazy wild. They really don’t bark unless there is something present.

In my pajamas, which consists of boxer shorts and a tank top, I threw on my rubber barn boots and headed out to the dogs. I wrangled up the dogs one by one. I still didn’t see anything until I got the last dog in. That’s when I spotted the tiny 16 ounce water bottled sized black piglet.

So back out I go again to now get the pig before a dog gets a hold of it. Now it’s about Midnight and I finally have chased down the little buckaroo. It was the highest pitch squeal I have ever heard. All the way up to the house. Dogs are howling at the tops of their lungs. Neighbors are turning on their porch lights.

I am pretty sure the mother and her piglets were disturbed by my dogs. I could hear all the dogs on the block howling one by one as the mother headed out of dodge…

I am just thinking “What has god given me now. I am running around trying to find something to put this little piggy in. Laughing the whole time. I spot the dog’s food container I just washed still on the front porch… Put midnight in there so I could collect my thoughts. Then it was like I just put the piglet in front of a microphone with the speaker on high… Oh my…

Ran around to the back and got the dog carrier and some old clothes and stuffed them inside. Put the piggy inside and locked her in my office. Another moment to catch my breath and figure out what my next move is.

I decided to give Midnight some warm milk to sooth her cries… She was a sleep in seconds after that.

April 5, 2017

The next morning starts the journey of caring for Midnight Cowgirl.

I know nothing about farm animals. But thank technology for the internet. I found information on pot belly pigs, but not on raising a Feral Pig. But still found wonderful advice on the  feeding regiment. Good thing a friend of a friend raises pigs also. Her advice was to get Colostrum Supplement and Uni-Milk by Manna Pro.

I built her a “Crib” 72” long x 23” wide. She comes out to eat and do her bathroom duties and back in the carrier for a nap inside my office, which has become her residence. It’s the only place that will stay warm all day and night. Since there is no mom to keep her warm she must stay warm. 90 Degrees to be exact is the optimal temperature for her..

5 dogs, 6 chickens and now a baby pig.

So here we are today April 8, 2017 and Midnight Cowgirl is thriving.

April 8, 2017

I am exhausted from the hour to 2 hour feedings. But she sleeps through the night which is awesome. Too bad I can’t get my dogs to do that.

She is becoming very playful and needs a yard to run around in and a friend. Gave Midnight a big ball to play with. Big for her we’ll say!!!

Fed her some ground up oatmeal and apple with her Colostrum Supplement (by Manna Pro) today.

She seems to have dandruff. I put a little Diatomaceous Earth on her to get rid of the fleas and ticks or lice. What ever it may be I wanted it dead. She is still to small to give her DE in her food. DE is Great for keeping any un-wanted pests from her inside and outside.

Going to mount the camera in her crib so I can get all the action footage. I am sure everyone will enjoy “Midnight Cowgirl’s” antics. As she grows and explores.

As The Temperatures Start To Rise Above 100

As The Temperatures Start To Rise Above 100.

As the heat index rises we must stay cool and safe from Over-Exposure from the sun and Heat stroke.

Here are some simple things to remember.

  • Never Leave any PERSON OR PET in a HOT CAR. Even with the windows down it is still too HOT for anything to survive when the cars temperature rises above 100 Degrees / 38 Celsius.
  • Make sure you carry at least 1 gallon jug of water with you in the car. Just in case you get stuck on the highway you will have something to hydrate with.
  • If you have pets “PLEASE provide them with ”SHADE” and “WATER”. I cannot express how important it is to care for your pets also.
  • Temperatures are higher in most states from what is “NORM”.

Those who are at highest risk: include people 65 and older, children younger than two, and people with chronic diseases or mental illness.  Closely monitor people who depend on you for their care. If you have elderly family members check in with them often to make sure they are properly hydrated and cool.

  • Are they drinking enough water?
  • Do they have access to air conditioning?
  • Do they need help keeping cool?

Following protective actions to prevent illness or death:

  • Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device during an extreme heat event.
  • Don’t use the stove or oven to cook—it will make you and your house hotter.
  • Even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather:
  • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more. Muscle cramping may be an early sign of heat-related illness.
  • If you participate on a sports team that practices during hot weather protect yourself and look out for your teammates. Pace activity, Start activities slow and pick up the pace gradually.
  • Contact your local health department or locate an air-conditioned shelter in your area. Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. If a home is not air-conditioned, people can reduce their risk for heat-related illness by spending time in public facilities that are air-conditioned, and using air conditioning in vehicles.
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully.  Limit outdoor activity, especially midday when the sun is hottest.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Wear and reapply sunscreen as indicated on the package.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
  • Check the local news for health and safety updates.

Seek medical care immediately if you or anyone else has symptoms of heat-related illness.

Is Your Pony Rolling In Pain From Colic?

Gas Colic Herb Recipe:

1 tablespoon powdered Slippery Elm Bark
1 tablespoon powdered Marshmallow Root
1 cup of water
Add powdered Fennel Seed and Cinnamon as if you were seasoning the tea. Go with your intuition on how much to add.
Bring mixture to boil
Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes (add 5 minutes if herbs are not powdered)
Feed 1/2 cup to 1 cup over 1/4-1/2 cup whole oats (or some other natural non-processed food stuff your horse likes to eat) 2-3 times/day.

Gas colic is when gas builds up anywhere in the horse’s gastrointestinal tract. Causing factors can be stress, inadequate access to roughage, or rich pasture grass, poor parasite management, and other unknown factors.
Having experienced gas colic several times with horses and consulting with several veterinarians on the topic, I found the following treatments to be successful in alleviating the horse’s pain and allowing the gas to pass.

colic-in-horses1. Hook up your horse trailer and take your horse for a ride on a bumpy dirt road.
2. Energy healing – any modality works by focusing on the gas pocket and visualizing its movement out of the system.
3. Walk your horse.
4. Allow your horse to lie down quietly, as this can help move the gas further up the GI Tract (partner this with energy healing).
5. Brew Slippery Elm Bark, Marshmallow Root, Fennel Seed and Cinnamon together into a tea and then give it to your horse over whole oats (see recipe below for details). This coats the GI Tract and allows things to move.
6. Arnica Montana homeopathic for pain; muscle test your horse for exact dosage. Note: if the pain is too much (nothing seems to be helping and you do not see signs of improvement), then Banamine from your veterinarian is required to break the pain cycle.
7. Carbo Vegetables homeopathic for stomach bloating with gas; muscle test your horse for exact dosage.
The keys are to break the pain cycle and to get things flowing again in the GI Tract. The longer the colic goes on, the more likely you will need direct veterinary assistance. You know your horse best so trust your instincts and intuition. Always consult with your veterinarian on how to proceed.

These tips are meant as a complement to traditional veterinarian care, and not meant as replacement treatment or diagnosis.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH AND YOUR PETS

PETS: Our best friends come in all shapes and sizes. Protect them from fleas and other crawling insects with diatomaceous earth. Thoroughly treat floor and bedding in and around pets’ sleeping quarters. Treat surrounding cracks and crevices, baseboards, carpeting and wherever fleas and other crawling insects are suspected.

flea-eggs-dogCRAWLING INSECT CONTROL diatomaceous earth kills by physical action, not chemical. The tiny diatoms scratch off the insect’s waxy coating, and they dehydrate and die.

“Our work is based on natural, preventive care for animals, so of course we are always on the lookout for good, quality NATURAL products to help our clients and our listening audience that won’t break the bank.” We have long been proponents of diatomaceous earth as a natural pest control for all animals.

de-microscopeRegular Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for Pet and Animal Consumption:
The Following is Recommended Food daily doses for Dogs and Cats. The diatomaceous earth seems to create an environment in the digestive system that parasites cannot live in. Also reported are great results with sore and painful hips and joints, and even a fuller, healthier shiny coat when fed as a regular daily supplement.

Other suggestions for food grade diatomaceous earth for pets:
Cat Litter/Kitty Litter: Liberally add Diatomaceous Earth to litter box to effectively control dampness and odors.

Animal Suggested Rate
Large Cats 1 teaspoon
Kittens 1/4 teaspoon
Dogs 100 lbs + 1-2 tablespoons
Dogs 50-100 lbs 1 tablespoon
Mini dogs 1/2 teaspoon

In clinical observations of feeding dogs over 35 lbs. 1 tablespoon/day, and dogs under 35 lbs. 1 teaspoon/day, of diatomaceous earth, within seven days all ova disappeared from stools. Diatomaceous Earth controlled Ascarids (Toxocana), Hookworms (Anclyostoma caninum), and Whipworms (Trichuris vulipis).

ARE YOU LEAVING ON A JET PLANE AND LEAVING YOUR PETS BEHIND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Who will be taking care of your 4 legged family members during the holidays?

This is a tough one unless you have a good friend or you already have a sitter. I always say “Plan this one out good”. If your dogs are comfortable with their sitter, you will be at ease. It is very stressful for all involved, especially your pets. They don’t understand what is going on, unless you travel often.

Before you leave

christmas-dog-hat
A WOOF from me please…

What is the name and number of the veterinarian? Is there an emergency animal clinic nearby? What should they do in case of an emergency.. Also leave a number of close friend or relative in the area.

Just make sure that your pet adores who ever may watch and care for your pets this Holiday Season.

Cropping Puppy Ears… Right or Wrong? What is cropping?

ear-cropping-stylesCropping your dog or puppy ears: otoplasty

refers to the practice of surgically altering the shape of the dog’s external ear. The procedure may be done to correct congenital defects or damage from injury or disease. Historically, ears were cropped on protection and varmint dogs to prevent ears from being mauled during fights with prey or each other. Also, erect prick ears are said to be healthier because they allow air flow that?s blocked in hanging or drop ear conformation of dog breeds like Beagles.

Truthfully, the procedure rarely is required for the puppy’s health. Usually it’s done purely for cosmetic reasons to change a folded or hanging ear conformation to an erect look favored by dog show fanciers.
In the United States, ear cropping is historically performed on more than fifty breeds. These include Boston Terriers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, and Schnauzers to conform to the specific look of each breed standard.

Ear Cropping Surgery

The surgery is performed on eight to ten week old puppies (Bostons more typically at four to six months of age). These early age surgeries create stress that can predispose at risk puppies to health problems like parvo or even distemper. Ear cropping requires general anesthesia and the expertise of a veterinary surgeon familiar with individual breed standards.
Various breeds standards dictate the preferred shape of the ear. A show trim often looks longer and more extreme on a Great Dane destined for the show ring than for a pet. And breeds like the Bull Terrier or American Pit Bull Terrier calls for shorter ear cropping.
Splinting and other specialized ear-bandaging techniques help form the puppy’s ears for a week or more following the surgery, and will need to be monitored and changed as the ears heal.
Discomfort from the bandaging and wound can make healing a challenge since pups paw at bandages and shake heads to relieve the discomfort. Medication to relieve postoperative pain is recommended.

Is Ear Cropping Humane?

In recent years, the ethics of cosmetic ear cropping has been called into question both in the United States and abroad.
The American Kennel Club breed club standards for these breeds generally include descriptions of both the ideal cropped, and a natural ear conformation. Some dog show fanciers believe cropped dogs do more favorably in competition and continue to crop in order to succeed in the show ring. Show dogs in some other countries may be disqualified if the ears are cropped.
In November 2008 and then revised July 1999, the American Veterinary Medical Association passed the following policy: The AVMA opposes ear cropping and tail docking of dogs when done solely for cosmetic purposes. The AVMA encourages the elimination of ear cropping and tail docking from breed standards. Shortly thereafter, some veterinary stopped tail docking and ear cropping altogether.
The practice of surgically altering the conformation of a dog’s ear is expensive, painful, requires tedious owner follow up, and is not always successful. Changing the way ears look may also interfere with the dogs body language. If conformation dog shows are not in your plans, there’s no reason to put your puppy through ear cropping. Please consult with your veterinarian and consider your own motives before putting your puppy through this elective procedure.

Canine Acupressure Techniques to Promote Healing.

Maintaining a well-rounded training regime and providing incremental warm-up exercise before strenuous exercise are an important part of preventing injuries. But with any sport, the dog’s enthusiasm and natural drive can lead to incidental and repetitive injuries, despite our best prevention efforts. That’s why it’s best to formulate an approach to dealing with our dog’s injuries, before they happen.

With an injury that is severe and/or debilitating, a holistic veterinarian should be consulted immediately to diagnose the extent of the damage and prescribe treatment. Soft tissue injuries in particular can be deceiving, so have a veterinarian check your dog to be sure that no other issues or further tissue damage occurs. After the holistic vet has seen your dog and made the necessary recommendations or if the injury is a simple bruise or superficial abrasion, you can help expedite the healing process. Only the animal’s body can heal itself – but you can play a role in helping to create the physical “environment” in which healing can take place in a balanced, healthy manner.

Healing with acupressure

Acupressure, like acupuncture, is based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concepts that have helped heal animals and humans alike for more than 3,000 years. The basic principle underlying the healing process is that vital substances of the body nourish the body while moving harmoniously throughout the body. Two of the vital substances are chi (or qi), which is life-promoting energy, and blood, a nutrient-rich body fluid. In TCM, blood includes both the blood as identified in conventional medicine and other body fluids, such as synovial fluids in the joints or the nutrient-rich fluid within the spinal column.

Any injury can cause disruption in the flow of chi and blood. Using acupressure points, also called acupoints, you can help reestablish the flow of chi and blood through an injured area thus creating the healing environment. The movement of chi and blood through the damaged tissue helps distribute the nutrients the body needs to heal quickly and well.

 reiki-pet

Surrounding the Dragon

“Surrounding the Dragon” is an acupoint selection technique that is specifically for enhancing the flow of chi and blood to and through a particular location on the body. This technique is used often as an effective tool for tendon and ligament joint injuries as well as for chronic issues such as arthritis and tendonitis. The “Dragon” is the painful, raging injury, arthritic joint, or site of scar tissue formation, which blocks the flow of chi and blood. Applying gentle pressure to specific acupoints surrounding the “offended” area stimulates the flow of the healing chi and blood while removing toxins and nourishing the tissues.everybody-loves-a-massageWhen Surrounding the Dragon, we stimulate acupoints located near – but not too close to – the insulted area because you do not want to “spank the crying baby.” This phrase is used in Chinese medicine to mean that you do not want to cause any further hurt when the area is already painful.  READ MORE

Why should you cook for your pets? by Dr. Karen Becker, VM

Why should you cook for your pets? by Dr. Karen Becker, VM

Feeding your pets a healthy diet is simple and easy.

It’s like cooking for yourself except your leaving out the salt and a few other ingredients. Whats great about cooking your pets meals is you know what’s  exactly in there. Your using beef, chicken, turkey and lamb fresh from the store. No processed precooked meat in a can.

Human Grade Food: It’s Not Just for Humans
Unless the commercial dog or cat food you’re buying is made with human-grade ingredients, you are feeding your pet rendered protein. Rendered meat is essentially pieces and parts of this animal or that — there’s really no telling. This low quality protein is less than desirable nutrition for your pet. You don’t know what country the meat came from or if this meat came from sick, road kill or euthanized animals. . . This can be an issue since other countries do not have the same regulations for human consumption.

Unfortunately, commercial pet food made entirely with human-grade ingredients is usually at least three times as expensive as food containing crude protein. This is one of the main reasons for switching your pet to a homemade diet. You have complete control over what goes into your dog’s or cat’s mouth, and you can insure you’re feeding high quality, human-grade protein and not the crude, pieces-and-parts variety.
