Here are a few steps you can take to get started.

#1 You’ll need seeds

Before you start let’s get everything you’ll need to set up for success.

  • Seeds (There are several to choose from)
  • Containers ( seedlings can be planted in sprouting cubes or directly into big pots 5 gallon size).
  • Soil ( should be light fluffy non fertilized).
  • Lights ( depending on how many plants, lighting can be as simple as a regular light bulb for the seedlings to Full Spectrum lighting for growth of vegetation and flowering)
  • pH Tester ( very important pH balance of the water should be between: First weeks: 5.8 – 5.9. Pre-bloom: 6.0 – 6.2. Real bloom: 6.0 – 6.3
  • Water ( test your water. You can use bottled spring water with no additives.)

Starting your seeds. You’ll need 1 paper towel and a plastic bag or a plate. Good water is necessary for a healthy start.

Place the paper towel in the bowl, plate or plastic bag. Place your seed or seeds in the center. If more than one seed make sure to give plenty of space between the seeds. Gently pour the water over the paper towel and place in a dark place. Check every day. Should only take a couple of days till a little white root appears. Wait until it’s about 1/2 inch long.

Cover it up and water

After the seed germinates wait until it is 1/2” long. Make a hole about 1 inch deep. A pencil eraser is a measuring tool. Place the root down and the seed cap. Lightly place some fluffy dirt on top and water. Set under the lights about 1” inch above seedling. Don’t turn on the lights until the 2 green leaves appear. Then 18 to 20 hours of light per day.

The second group showed dangerous levels of Alanine Amino Transferase (ALT) and Aspartate Amino Transferase (AST), two enzymes recruited to remove the synthetic CBD from their bodies. The study concluded that the human body is not equipped to properly catabolize synthetic cannabinoids.

In the summer of 2018, the FDA issued a statement warning of the “significant health risks of synthetic cannabinoid products” and linked their usage to “severe illnesses and even deaths” in several cases over the past few months in a number of states across America.

Where Do Coronaviruses Come From

Coronaviruses are common in many different species of animals, including camels and bats. Rarely, these coronaviruses can evolve and infect humans and then spread between humans. Recent examples of this include SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.

Most coronaviruses infect animals, but not people. In the future, one or more of these other coronaviruses could potentially evolve and spread to humans, as has happened in the past. We still don’t understand why only certain coronaviruses are able to infect people.

Common human coronaviruses

Common human coronaviruses, including types 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold. Most people get infected with these viruses at some point in their lives. These illnesses usually only last for a short amount of time. Symptoms may include

  • runny nose
  • headache
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • fever
  • a general feeling of being unwell

Human coronaviruses can sometimes cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. This is more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease, people with weakened immune systems, infants, and older adults.

Transmission

Human coronaviruses most commonly spread from an infected person to others through

  • the air by coughing and sneezing
  • close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands
  • touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands
  • rarely, fecal contamination

In the United States, people usually get infected with common human coronaviruses in the fall and winter. However, you can get infected at any time of the year. Most people will get infected with one or more of the common human coronaviruses in their lifetime. Young children are most likely to get infected. However, people can have multiple infections in their lifetime.

Other human coronaviruses

Most people confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection have had severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

Some people also had diarrhea and nausea/vomiting. For many people with MERS, more severe complications followed, such as pneumonia and kidney failure. About 3 or 4 out of every 10 people reported with MERS have died. Most of the people who died had a pre-existing medical condition that weakened their immune system, or an underlying medical condition that hadn’t yet been discovered. Medical conditions sometimes weaken people’s immune systems and make them more likely to get sick or have severe illness.

Pre-existing conditions among people who got MERS have included

  • diabetes
  • cancer
  • chronic lung disease
  • chronic heart disease
  • chronic kidney disease

Some infected people had mild symptoms (such as cold-like symptoms) or no symptoms at all.

The symptoms of MERS start to appear about 5 or 6 days after a person is exposed, but can range from 2 to 14 days.

The coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China, raised global concerns but, after a two day meeting, the World Health Organization has issued a statement saying the situation is not yet an emergency of international concern.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring the situation and will provide updated information as it becomes available.
In addition, Mayo Clinic continues to closely monitor the coronavirus outbreak and says staff is trained and prepared to care for patients, should the need arise.
Dr. Pritish Tosh, a Mayo Clinic infectious diseases specialist, says health care providers need to ask patients with respiratory illness and fever about their recent travel.
“It’s important we focus on patients with fever and respiratory symptoms, not just for the novel coronavirus, but also for other respiratory viruses that are circulating, such as influenza,” says Dr. Tosh. “Once these patients are identified, they should be given a mask to wear and put into a room where a health care provider can ask them about recent travel.”
Dr. Tosh adds, “They may have been to a part of the Middle East where there is ongoing MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) infections. They may also have been in Wuhan, China, or been close to someone who has been there.”
The coronavirus is in the same family of viruses as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS.

Diagnosis

Testing healthy people for lung cancer

People with an increased risk of lung cancer may consider annual lung cancer screening using low-dose CT scans. Lung cancer screening is generally offered to people 55 and older who smoked heavily for many years and are otherwise healthy.

Discuss your lung cancer risk with your doctor. Together you can decide whether lung cancer screening is right for you.

Tests to diagnose lung cancer

If there’s reason to think that you may have lung cancer, your doctor can order a number of tests to look for cancerous cells and to rule out other conditions.

Tests may include:

  • Imaging tests. An X-ray image of your lungs may reveal an abnormal mass or nodule. A CT scan can reveal small lesions in your lungs that might not be detected on an X-ray.
  • Sputum cytology. If you have a cough and are producing sputum, looking at the sputum under the microscope can sometimes reveal the presence of lung cancer cells.
  • Tissue sample (biopsy). A sample of abnormal cells may be removed in a procedure called a biopsy. Your doctor can perform a biopsy in a number of ways, including bronchoscopy, in which your doctor examines abnormal areas of your lungs using a lighted tube that’s passed down your throat and into your lungs; mediastinoscopy, in which an incision is made at the base of your neck and surgical tools are inserted behind your breastbone to take tissue samples from lymph nodes; and needle biopsy, in which your doctor uses X-ray or CT images to guide a needle through your chest wall and into the lung tissue to collect suspicious cells. A biopsy sample may also be taken from lymph nodes or other areas where cancer has spread, such as your liver.

Careful analysis of your cancer cells in a lab will reveal what type of lung cancer you have. Results of sophisticated testing can tell your doctor the specific characteristics of your cells that can help determine your prognosis and guide your treatment.

Tests to determine the extent of the cancer

Once your lung cancer has been diagnosed, your doctor will work to determine the extent (stage) of your cancer. Your cancer’s stage helps you and your doctor decide what treatment is most appropriate.

Staging tests may include imaging procedures that allow your doctor to look for evidence that cancer has spread beyond your lungs. These tests include CT, MRI, positron emission tomography (PET) and bone scans. Not every test is appropriate for every person, so talk with your doctor about which procedures are right for you.

The stages of lung cancer are indicated by Roman numerals that range from 0 to IV, with the lowest stages indicating cancer that is limited to the lung. By stage IV, the cancer is considered advanced and has spread to other areas of the body.

Treatment

  • Lung cancer surgery

You and your doctor choose a cancer treatment plan based on a number of factors, such as your overall health, the type and stage of your cancer, and your preferences.

In some cases, you may choose not to undergo treatment. For instance, you may feel that the side effects of treatment will outweigh the potential benefits. When that’s the case, your doctor may suggest comfort care to treat only the symptoms the cancer is causing, such as pain or shortness of breath.

Surgery

During surgery your surgeon works to remove the lung cancer and a margin of healthy tissue. Procedures to remove lung cancer include:

  • Wedge resection to remove a small section of lung that contains the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue
  • Segmental resection to remove a larger portion of lung, but not an entire lobe
  • Lobectomy to remove the entire lobe of one lung
  • Pneumonectomy to remove an entire lung

If you undergo surgery, your surgeon may also remove lymph nodes from your chest in order to check them for signs of cancer.

Surgery may be an option if your cancer is confined to the lungs. If you have a larger lung cancer, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy or radiation therapy before surgery in order to shrink the cancer. If there’s a risk that cancer cells were left behind after surgery or that your cancer may recur, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-powered energy beams from sources such as X-rays and protons to kill cancer cells. During radiation therapy, you lie on a table while a machine moves around you, directing radiation to precise points on your body.

For people with locally advanced lung cancer, radiation may be used before surgery or after surgery. It’s often combined with chemotherapy treatments. If surgery isn’t an option, combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be your primary treatment.

For advanced lung cancers and those that have spread to other areas of the body, radiation therapy may help relieve symptoms, such as pain.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. One or more chemotherapy drugs may be given through a vein in your arm (intravenously) or taken orally. A combination of drugs usually is given in a series of treatments over a period of weeks or months, with breaks in between so that you can recover.

Chemotherapy is often used after surgery to kill any cancer cells that may remain. It can be used alone or combined with radiation therapy. Chemotherapy may also be used before surgery to shrink cancers and make them easier to remove.

In people with advanced lung cancer, chemotherapy can be used to relieve pain and other symptoms.

Radiosurgery

Stereotactic body radiotherapy, also known as radiosurgery, is an intense radiation treatment that aims many beams of radiation from many angles at the cancer. Stereotactic body radiotherapy treatment is typically completed in one or a few treatments.

Radiosurgery may be an option for people with small lung cancers who can’t undergo surgery. It may also be used to treat lung cancer that spreads to other parts of the body, including the brain.

Targeted drug therapy

Targeted drug treatments focus on specific abnormalities present within cancer cells. By blocking these abnormalities, targeted drug treatments can cause cancer cells to die.

Many targeted therapy drugs are used to treat lung cancer, though most are reserved for people with advanced or recurrent cancer.

Some targeted therapies only work in people whose cancer cells have certain genetic mutations. Your cancer cells may be tested in a laboratory to see if these drugs might help you.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy uses your immune system to fight cancer. Your body’s disease-fighting immune system may not attack your cancer because the cancer cells produce proteins that blind the immune system cells. Immunotherapy works by interfering with that process.

Immunotherapy treatments are generally reserved for people with advanced lung cancer.

Palliative care

People with lung cancer often experience signs and symptoms of the cancer, as well as side effects of treatment. Supportive care, also known as palliative care, is a specialty area of medicine that involves working with a doctor to minimize your signs and symptoms.

Your doctor may recommend that you meet with a palliative care team soon after your diagnosis to ensure that you’re comfortable during and after your cancer treatment.

In one study, people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who began receiving supportive care soon after their diagnosis lived longer than those who continued with treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Those receiving supportive care reported improved mood and quality of life. They survived, on average, almost three months longer than did those receiving standard care.

What is proton Therapy

Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy — a treatment that uses high-energy beams to treat tumors. Radiation therapy using X-rays has long been used to treat cancers and noncancerous (benign) tumors. Proton therapy is a newer type of radiation therapy that uses energy from positively charged particles called protons.

Proton therapy has shown promise in treating several kinds of cancer. Studies have suggested that proton therapy may cause fewer side effects than traditional radiation, since doctors can better control where the proton beams deposit their energy. But few studies have directly compared proton therapy radiation and X-ray radiation, so it’s not clear whether proton therapy is more effective in prolonging lives.

Proton therapy isn’t widely available in the United States.

Why it’s done

Proton therapy is used as a treatment for cancer and some noncancerous tumors. Proton therapy may be used as the only treatment for your condition. Or it may be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as surgery and chemotherapy.

Proton therapy is sometimes used to treat:

  • Brain tumors
  • Breast cancer
  • Cancer in children
  • Eye melanoma
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Pituitary gland tumors
  • Prostate cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Tumors affecting the spine
  • Tumors in the base of the skull

Clinical trials are investigation proton therapy as a treatment for a number of other types of cancer.

Risks

Proton therapy can cause side effects as the cancer cells die or when the energy from the proton beam damages healthy tissue.

Because doctors can better control where proton therapy releases its highest concentration of energy, proton therapy is believed to affect less healthy tissue and have fewer side effects than traditional radiation therapy. Still, proton therapy does release some of its energy in healthy tissue.

What side effects you experience will depend on what part of your body is being treated and the dose of proton therapy you receive.

In general, common side effects of proton therapy include:

  • Fatigue
  • Mouth, eating and digestion problems
  • Headaches
  • Hair loss around the part of your body being treated
  • Skin redness around the part of your body being treated
  • Soreness around the part of your body being treated

How you prepare

Before you undergo proton therapy, your health care team guides you through a planning process to ensure that the proton beam reaches the precise spot in your body where it’s needed.

Planning typically includes:

  • Determining the best position for you during treatment. During radiation simulation, your radiation therapy team works to find a comfortable position for you during treatment. It’s imperative that you lie still during treatment, so finding a comfortable position is vital. To do this, you’ll be positioned on a table that will be used during your treatment. Cushions and restraints are used to place you in the correct position and to help you hold still. Your radiation therapy team will mark the area of your body that will receive the radiation. Depending on your situation, you may receive temporary marking with a marker or you may receive permanent tattoos.
  • Planning the path of the protons with imaging tests. Your radiation therapy team may have you undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) scans to determine the area of your body to be treated and how best to reach it with the proton beams.

Consider the cost

Proton therapy is a newer form of radiation therapy that may be more expensive than traditional radiation therapy with X-rays. Not all insurance policies cover proton therapy. When considering your treatment options, work with your health insurance provider to understand what costs are covered by insurance and which costs you’ll be expected to pay.

What you can expect

During proton therapy

You typically undergo proton therapy five days a week for several weeks. However, in some cases, you may undergo only one or only a few treatments, depending on your condition. The actual proton therapy treatment may take only a minute or so, but expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes preparing before each treatment session.

You may also undergo weekly CT verification scans to see if the dose you receive needs to be recalculated based on changes in weight, or tumor size and shape, depending on your situation.

To prepare, you’ll be positioned on a table. Cushions and restraints will be used to hold your body still. Then you’ll undergo an imaging test, such as an X-ray or CT scan, to make sure your body is in the same precise position before each treatment.

Your radiation therapy team will then leave the room and go to an area where they can monitor you. They can still see and hear you.

What you experience next depends on the type of proton therapy machine your treatment team uses:

  • A proton therapy machine that rotates around you. If you’re undergoing proton therapy with a machine called a gantry, you’ll be placed on a table that is slowly slid into the circular opening of the machine. The machine rotates around you to direct proton beams at precise points on your body.
  • A proton therapy machine that doesn’t move. If you’re undergoing proton therapy with a fixed-beam machine, the table you’re positioned on will move and the proton therapy machine will remain still. The movement of your table during treatment is controlled remotely by your radiation therapy team. How often your table moves during treatment depends on your situation.

You won’t be able to feel the radiation during your proton therapy treatment.

After proton therapy

Once your treatment session is complete, you can go about your day. You won’t be radioactive or give off radiation.

Side effects of radiation usually develop over time. You may experience few side effects at first. But after several treatments you may experience fatigue, which can make it feel like your usual activities take more energy or that you have little energy for everyday tasks. You may also notice a sunburn-like skin redness in the area where the proton beams are directed.

Results

Your doctor may recommend periodic imaging tests during and after your proton therapy to determine whether your cancer is responding to the treatments. How often you’ll undergo scans depends on your situation.

Exercise burns calories. In the case of walking and running, the calories you burn depend much more on the distance you cover and your body weight than on your pace. This table shows calories burned per mile of walking or jogging on the level for people of varying weights:

A hundred or so calories a mile might not seem like much, but they can add up to better weight control. For example, a 2009 study of 4,995 men and women found that the average American gains about 2.2 pounds a year during middle age. The Story of the Biomat with Calvin Kim (the inventor)

In September of 1996 the Kim’s were in the jewelry business and came across an opportunity to purchase a Korean Jade mine. The mine was being offered for six million dollars, which was a reduction from the original price of twenty million.

Originally, the intention was to use the jade in their jewelry business. However, that quickly changed as Calvin witnessed so many people coming to the jade mine for therapeutic benefits. Everyday three to four hundred people were coming to sit inside the jade mine. Calvin was so surprised! That transaction truly changed the life path for Calvin and Jeanna Kim.

Although they invested in the mine strictly because of its value to the company, for jewelry, they soon discovered they had many buyers seeking the jade in powder form. The Kims learned that one medical device company “RichWay Korea” was using the powder in the manufacturing of its medical mats. Curious, and struggling with several of his own health challenges, Calvin tried one of the jade mats and experienced first-hand the powerful health benefits the mat provided.

Realizing the sales potential of such a device, Calvin and Jeanna convinced their jewelry company to invest in the struggling, under-marketed RichWay Korea. If you have high blood pressure and are advised not to use hot tubs, can you use the BioMat? In answering this Calvin shares that he had high blood pressure and understands the concern. When someone with high blood pressure gets into a hot tub the heat raises body temperature and may cause the blood pressure and circulation to rise. That said, the infra ray heat the BioMat generates is very different energy. The infra ray penetrates the body like a fine massage and activates the mitochondria. That is the one big difference. The infra ray is very gentle and will assist the stability of blood pressure by activating mitochondria and safely regulating blood circulation. Heat like that in a hot tub will not activate mitochondria and the blood pressure will rise.

Why do we have amethyst and tourmaline in mini-BioMat and Pillow? The Professional BioMat design has a 10-15 inch negative ion panel. The Mini-BioMat can only host a 3-5 inch negative ion panel. Tourmaline generates negative ions and that is why it is in the Mini-BioMat and Pillow, to increase the negative ions.

What is the difference between the Jade and Amethyst BioMat? The human body is around 32 million hertz vibration. Jade is about 20 million hertz vibration, which provides a gentle lower vibration. RichWay™s research team discovered that Amethyst is closer to 32 million hertz, which is stronger than Jade and closer to the vibration of the human body. Some people are very sensitive or fragile and the Jade may work best for them. For example, a person with MS and heat sensitivity may be more comfortable with the gentle vibration of the Jade BioMat. Calvin added, that was a good question, however most important question is:

Why we produce negative ions? The number one reason is for emotional support, negative ions make us happy, and secondly, to reduce pain. Can the first infra ray setting be used to lower body temperature? Yes. The first setting is 95 degrees, lower than our normal body temperature of 98 degrees.

Is there a difference in benefit from sleeping all night on the BioMat and a 40 minute high heat session? Yes, there is! The forty minute high heat sessions are to produce HST (heat shock protein), which helps improve the production of T-cells and the immune system. Sleeping on the BioMat is very important, however you would only use a low setting, like number 2 green (104 degrees). Remember, RichWay has done extensive research and the infra rays, negative ions, and crystals in the BioMat technology are designed to nurture and support us both emotionally and physically. My daughter has late-stage lyme disease. I was wondering if the Biomat can be put inside a mild hyperbaric chamber. We purchased a mild hyperbaric chamber for her several years ago which she uses 3x per week with just a vicso-elastic pad inside. Would she be able to put the Biomat right on top of that while being treated with the mild hbo? There should be no reason why not.  Generally, unless water is involved, the mat can lay anywhere.  Just have the control box outside the chamber if possible, and be sure that no more moisture than an intense sauna would have is going to be present in the chamber.

Can you tell me if this product is safe to lay on for any period of time?  I am concerned about the electromagnetics as being harmful.  Do you have any documentation? Have you used a Trifield meter on the Biomat at all? Yes, I have seen it tested with three different tri-meters.  A tri-meter usually has an electric setting and a magnetic setting.  If it is set to electric, there should be no or very little reading. I have done this myself. The outlets on the wall, lamps, etc all have very distinct readings, and the Biomat had no reading.

If set to magnetic, which has little established harmful effects in low range, and does not stand for electromagnetic, you will get a reading.  A specialist in EMF’s Dr. Korn has stated that “0-4.5 in magnetic miligaus is absolutely safe, 4.5-7 is established as safe, yet does have a slight effect on the anatomy, neither harmful nor necessarily beneficial, 7-up should be limited when coming from electrical devices,” he tested the Biomat’s magnetic reading at 5.5mg and had no electrical reading more than an instant of insignificant signal at the turning on of the mat.  Everything that has mass has a magnetic field.  Amethyst crystals have a pretty strong magnetic field.  The harmful electromagnetic fields that we should all try to limit and avoid in our lives are 60 cycle, AC (alternating current) electromagnetic fields.  These fields have been proven harmful, and after Nikolai Tesla discovered them and released them, he soon after begged for them to be revoked due to their detrimental effects on the human body, yet it is what we find in our homes and most every electrical device.

The Biomat is transformed (converted) to a DC (direct Current) in its control box, making it much more suitable and harmonizing for interaction with the human body.  It has a very different quality to its energy, and although it will still get a reading on a trimeter, it is not the same as a reading from an AC device, which is harmful and blocks the human body’s own electrical sensitivity and conduction, interferes with cellular function and communication, etc.

There are also settings to test what range, such as 0-5mg (miligaus), 0-10, 0-100, etc.  If it is set to 0-5 and the reading is 4 or 5, which is very small, their reading will seem off the charts.  If the meter is set to 0-100 and the reading is 4-5 it will seem miniscule. Test results have been certified.

Is this helpful if you have adrenal suppression or Lupus? The function of the Bio mat is generally to support Infrared Ray heat. The purpose is to “Make Enzyme Activate”. If you can make enzyme activate, than there are many amazing things that will be happen. The body will recover by itself very stongly. Here is a list of Contraindications:
Organ Transplants – Recipients of any type of organ transplant (Kidney, Heart, Liver, etc.) should not use the Biomat. After an organ transplant, patients will need to take immunosuppressant (anti-rejection) drugs to help prevent their immune system from attacking, or rejecting, the new organ. The use of the Biomat’s far infrared rays increases immune system function, which will tell your body to attack the new organ.

External Pacemaker – We recommend anyone who uses an external pacemaker that they should not use the Biomat.

Use with Caution:
Medications – We recommend anyone who is currently taking medications to consult their physician before the use of the Biomat. The use of the Biomat’s far infrared rays may interfere with certain medications.

Fever – We recommend anyone experiencing a high fever to use the Biomat with no heat and negative ions only.

Joint Injuries – We recommend anyone with recent (acute) joint injuries to use the Biomat with no heat and negative ions only. Injuries should not be heated within the first 48 hours, as joints that are chronically hot or swollen may respond poorly to heat.

Insensitivity To Heat – We recommend anyone with diseases associated with a reduced ability to sweat or insensitivity to heat to use the Biomat with no heat and negative ions only.

Internal Pacemaker / Defibrillator – We recommend anyone who uses an internal pace maker and/or defibrillator to consult their physician before the use of the Biomat. In general, infrared heating pads have not been shown to interfere or damage pacemakers/defibrillators. However, there may be a small chance of causing interference occasionally. We recommend anyone who uses a pacemaker and/or defibrillator to use the Biomat on low heat only (95F-113F). The use of the Biomat increases circulation of the blood, which can cause an increase in heart beat. Some people who use a pacemaker, experience discomfort since their heart beat is being controlled. If you are experiencing continued discomfort, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. For persons with a defibrillator, do not lay the Biomat directly over your device.

Certain Ailments – We recommend anyone with the following ailments to use the Biomat on low heat (95F – 113F) or negative ions only. It is inadvisable to raise the core temperature to high levels of persons with the following conditions: Adrenal Suppression Disorders, Addison’s Disease, Adrenal Insufficiency, Systematic Lupus Erythematosus, and Heat Sensitive MS. Anyone with other types of MS can use the Biomat at any setting.

Brain Tumor – We recommend anyone with a brain tumor to use the Biomat on low heat only (95F-113F).

Bypass Surgery – We recommend anyone who has undergone bypass surgery to use the Biomat on low heat only (95F-113F). The use of the Biomat increases circulation of the blood, which can cause normal blood vessels to expand. Some people who have gone through bypass surgery, experience discomfort since their blood vessels can’t expand.

Diabetics – We recommend anyone with Diabetes to use the Biomat on low heat only (95F-113F). Diabetics’ skin is weak, which can cause low heat burn from the use of the Biomat. Once the skin is damaged, it may be difficult to recover.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) – We recommend people with chronically high blood pressure (hypertension) to use the Biomat with caution before and after use, and on low heat only (95F-113F). Sudden changes in body temperature and/or weather temperature may cause an increase in blood pressure.

Newborn Babies – We recommend parents with newborns to wait until their baby is at least 6 months old before using the Biomat on low heat only (95F-104F) or negative ions only, with adult supervision. Please use with caution.

Infants – We recommend that infants using the Biomat should use it on low heat only (95F-113F), with adult supervision. If temperature is too high for the child, the temperature can’t be controlled without an adult. Please use with caution

Pregnancy / Expectant Women – We recommend women in their pregnancy or those who are expecting to use the Biomat on low heat only (95F-113F). Excessive temperatures have a potential for fetal damage during early months of pregnancy so it is important to consult your physician before use of the Biomat.

Radiation Therapy/Chemotherapy – We recommend anyone that has currently received radiation treatments or chemotherapy to use the Biomat on low to medium heat (95F-131F).

Surgical Implants – Recipients of Titanium, Metal, Ceramic, or Plastic implants can use the Biomat. Surgical implants generally reflect infrared rays and are not heated by an infrared heat system. Anyone who experiences pain in those areas should check with their physician.

Silicon – Silicon implants may be warmed by infrared rays. Silicon is known to melt at over 200 degrees Celsius / 392 Fahrenheit, so it should not be adversely affected by infrared rays. It is advised that you consult your surgeon before use.

Pain: Pain should not be experienced when using the Biomat. However, the infrared heat will go to areas of disease or discomfort so some people may perceive this as pain and others as a sensation. If pain is persistent, discontinue use.

Worsened Condition: If there are any worsened conditions when using the Biomat, discontinue use. Some temporary symptoms may occur, which can be attributed to the detoxification and healing process. The Klinik St. George Hospital – http://www.klinik-st-georg.de – in Bad Aibling, Germany, has treated 2500 German and 2500 foreign patients each year. NASA then funded Medical College research and clinical trials using LEDs to treat cancer patients following bone marrow transplants. Mucositis, a very painful side effect of cancer treatment, produces throat and mouth ulcerations and gastrointestinal problems so severe that health suffers as chewing and swallowing food and drink become difficult or even impossible. In the first trial at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, LED treatment proved so successful in treating mucositis in the young patients that another round of trials has been funded.

“We have now at Children’s Hospital essentially prevented mucositis since we’ve been treating these patients once a day for eighty seconds with our handheld light emitting diode arrays,” said Dr. Whelan. “Now we have the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in collaboration with us performing a multi-center trial throughout the United States and several foreign countries. If we can replicate the results in other centers and reproduce that same data, which we have published, that will become the standard of care. I contacted the FDA when we had achieved these results, because it was pretty dramatic and we were actually surprised by how well it worked. We’re already well into the multi-center trial and we anticipate being done in five years.

“In the Defense Department work, the idea is rapid battlefield care, self-care being the optimum. If you’re in a modern special operations scenario, you’re in a small rapidly mobile unit expected to be self-sufficient that may not be evacuated for over 96 hours if there are casualties. You will not be able to get to M.A.S.H. units or hospitals. If you’re lucky enough to have a medic or a corpsman, he may be the first casualty. So what do you do? If you need to fight back because the alternative is to be killed, it’s important to be able to treat problems yourself.

“So, we have developed hand-held prototypes that are currently deployed in the Middle East and being tested on patients with various casualties, most notably laser eye injuries. Laser eye injuries are a new emerging battlefield threat. There are many unclassified stories about our troops in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea that have been shot with lasers with the intent to blind, as well as the occasional inadvertent military laser injury with a range finder.”

Dr. Whelan led a study on using LEDs to reverse blindness in rats that was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Vol. 100, March 18, 2003) and was inducted into the NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame in 2001 for his LED research, indicators that the progression in this area from science fiction to “real science” is complete. Overcoming the Impact of Weightlessness

“In our NASA projects what we’re trying to do is find ways to use the energy of near-infrared light to stimulate the little engine in every cell, which is the mitochondria, so that the drive train, which absorbs these very wavelengths of light energy, can be powered to do what it’s best at doing, which is providing energy for the cell to do everything it does,” said Dr. Whelan. “Now, light absorbed by, say, your sweater or my black pants, does not automatically convert into biological benefits. That’s the NASA thing. It’s a long-term preventative daily treatment with this near-infrared light to help ‘goose’ their cells into better health to overcome the problems of chronic weightlessness on the cell.”

“If you think about it, a lot of injuries result in an energy problem because the tissue is damaged, injured, and therefore has difficulties going through its normal processes of energy metabolism,” said Dr. Whelan. “Usually there’s a lot of swelling, which strangles the blood vessels. Those are the differences we’d like to make in neurology, and those things can have spin-offs beyond military combat casualty care to things like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic ulcers, other tissues that can be affected, metabolic diseases where the mitochondria is the area of tissue affected by the problem, serious burns, and then a whole host of neurologic injuries. These are all potential future areas.”

What is Infrared Heat? Radiant heat is simply a form of [light] energy that heats objects directly through a process called conversion without having to heat the air between. Radiant heat is also called infrared energy or IR. The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into three segments by wavelength, measured in microns or micrometers (a micron = 1/1,000,000 of a meter): 0.076 to 1.5 microns = near or close; 1.5 to 5.6 = middle or intermediate; 5.6 to 1000 = far or long wave infrared. The far infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum occurs just below, or “infra” to, red light as the next lowest energy band. This band of light is not visible to human eyes but can be seen by special cameras that translate infrared into visible colors. We can, however, feel this type of light, which we perceive as heat. The sun produces most of its energy in the infrared segment of the spectrum. Our atmosphere has a “window” in it that allows infrared rays — in the 7 to 14 micron ranges — to safely reach the earth’s surface. When warmed, the earth radiates infrared rays in the 7 to 14 micron bands with its peak output at 10 microns.

The infrared heat produced by infrared saunas is similar to the heat from the sun. Our tissues normally produce infrared energy and burn it as fuel to keep us warm and use it for tissue repair. Tissue production of infrared energy is associated with a variety of healing responses. At times, the infrared energy in our tissues may require a boost to a higher level to insure the fullest healing possible for tissue repair. Dr. Tsu-Tsair Oliver Chi, when summing up how infrared devices are attuned to the human body, reported that body tissues that need an infrared boost selectively absorb infrared rays. After boosting a tissue’s infrared energy, the remaining rays pass onward harmlessly.

The Swedish National Institute of Radiation Protection has concluded, as well, that infrared heaters are not dangerous. Instead, Japanese researchers have reported that infrared radiant heat [is the] antidote [to] the negative effects of toxic electromagnetic sources. German researchers reported beneficial effects from hour-long whole-body infrared exposure in two groups of hypertensive patients studied in 1989, including a 24-hour long increase in peripheral blood flow and decrease in high blood pressure.) The August 7, 1981 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported what is common knowledge today: Many people who run do so to place a demand on their cardiovascular system as well as to build muscle. What isn’t well known is that it also reported the “regular use of a sauna may impart a similar stress on the cardiovascular system, and its [infrared heat] regular use may be as effective as a means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories as regular exercise.” It has been found that the infrared sauna makes it possible for people in wheelchairs, those who are otherwise unable to exert themselves, and those who won’t follow an exercising/conditioning program to achieve a cardiovascular training effect. It also allows for more variety in any ongoing training program.

Blood flow during whole-body hyperthermia is reported to rise from a normal five to seven quarts a minute to as many as 13 quarts a minute. Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology reports that producing one gram of sweat requires 0.586 kcal. The JAMA citation above goes on to state that “A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 grams in a sauna, consuming nearly 300 kcal – the equivalent of running two to three miles. A heat-conditioned person can easily sweat off 600 to 800 kcal with no adverse effect. While the weight of water loss can be regained by re-hydration, the calories consumed will not be.”

Assuming one takes a sauna for 30 minutes, some interesting comparisons can be drawn. Two of the highest calorie output exercises are rowing and running marathons. Peak output on a rowing machine or during a marathon burns about 600 calories in 30 minutes. An infrared sauna may better this from “just slightly” up to 250 percent by burning 900 to 2400 calories in the same period of time. It might in a single session simulate the consumption of energy equal to that expended in a six-to nine-mile run.

The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology reports “medical practitioners make use of infrared radiant heat to treat sprains, strains, bursitis, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis, and muscle pain…”

Other Therapeutic Effects of Infrared Heat

The following information has been summarized from Chapter 9 of Therapeutic Heat and Cold, Fourth Edition, Editors Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., Williams, and Wilkin, or concluded from data gathered there.

Generally it is accepted that [infrared] heat produces the following desirable therapeutic effects:

Infrared heat increases the extensibility of collagen tissues. Tissues heated to 45 degrees Celsius [113F] and then stretched exhibit a non-elastic residual elongation of about 0.5 to 0.9 percent that persists after the stretch is removed. This does not occur in these same tissues when stretched at normal tissue temperatures. Therefore 20 stretching sessions can produce a 10 to 18 percentage increase in length of tissues heated and stretched. Stretching of tissue in the presence of heat would be especially valuable in working with ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, fascia, and synoviurn that have become scarred, thickened, or contracted. Such stretching at 45 degrees Celsius caused much less weakening in stretched tissues for a given elongation than a similar elongation produced at normal tissue temperatures. Experiments cited clearly showed low-force stretching could produce significant residual elongation when heat is applied together with stretching or range-of-motion exercises. This is safer than stretching tissues at normal tissue temperatures.
Infrared heat decreases joint stiffness. There was a 20 percent decrease in rheumatoid finger joint stiffness at 45 degrees Celsius (112 degrees Fahrenheit) as compared with 33 degrees Celsius (92 degrees Fahrenheit), which correlated perfectly to both subjective and objective observation of stiffness. Speculation has it that any stiffened joint and thickened connective tissues may respond in a similar fashion.
Infrared heat relieves muscle spasms. Muscle spasms have long been observed to be reduced through the use of heat, be they secondary to underlying skeletal, joint, or neuro-pathological conditions. This result is possibly produced by the combined effect of heat on both primary and secondary afferent nerves from spindle cells and from its effects on Golgi tendon organs. The results produced demonstrated their peak effect within the therapeutic temperature range obtainable with radiant heat.
Infrared heat treatment leads to pain relief. Pain may be relieved via the reduction of attendant or secondary spasms. Pain is also at times related to ischemia (lack of blood supply) due to tension or spasm that can be improved by the hyperemia that heat-induced vasodilation produces, thus breaking the feedback loop in which the ischemia leads to further spasm and then more pain. Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. In one dental study, repeated heat applications led finally to abolishment of the whole nerve response responsible for pain arising from dental pulp. [Infrared] Heat may lead to both increased endorphin production and a shutting down of the so called “spinal gate” of Melzack and Wall, each of which can reduce pain. Localized infrared therapy using lamps tuned to the 2 to 25 micron waveband is used for the treatment and relief of pain by over 40 reputable Chinese medical institutes.
Infrared heat increases blood flow. Heating one area of the body produces reflex-modulated vasodilators in distant-body areas, even in the absence of a change in core body temperature. Heat one extremity and the contra-lateral extremity also dilates; heat a forearm and both lower extremities dilate; heat the front of the trunk and the hand dilates. Heating [with infrared heat] muscles produces an increased blood flow level similar to that seen during exercise. Temperature elevation also produces an increased blood flow and dilation directly in capillaries, arterioles, and veinules, probably through direct action on their smooth muscles. The release of bradykinin, released as a consequence of sweat-gland activity, also produces increased blood flow and vasodilation. Whole-body hyperthermia, with a consequent core temperature elevation, further induces vasodilation via a hypothalamic-induced decrease in sympathetic tone on the arteriovenous anastomoses. Vasodilation is also produced by axonal reflexes that change vasomotor balance.
Infrared heat assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, edema, and exudates. Increased peripheral circulation provides the transport needed to help evacuate edema, which can help inflammation, decrease pain, and help speed healing.
Infrared heat introduced in cancer therapy. More recently, infrared heat has been used in cancer therapy. This is a new experimental procedure that shows great promise in some cases when used properly. American researchers favor careful monitoring of the tumor temperature; whereas, the successes reported in Japan make no mention of such precaution.
Infrared heat affects soft tissue injury. Infrared healing is now becoming a leading edge care for soft tissue injuries to promote both relief in chronic or intractable “permanent” cases, and accelerated healing in newer injuries.

Infrared therapy is one of the least costly, safest and most powerful ways to eliminate toxic metals, toxic chemicals and chronic infections. The benefits include:

Skin rejuvenation. Sauna use slowly restores elimination through the skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body and a major eliminative channel. In most people, it is inactive, congested and toxic. Sun exposure, use of synthetic clothing, bathing in chlorinated water and exposure to hundreds of chemicals damage the skin. Excessive sympathetic nervous system activity and emotions such as fear, anger and guilt cause blood to be withdrawn from the skin, contributing to inactivity of the skin.
Enhanced sweating. Sweating in a sauna is a by-product of applying heat to the body. The sweating process gently and safely helps eliminate all heavy metals and toxic chemicals. Medical studies demonstrate that most toxins can be eliminated through the skin, relieving the burden on the kidneys and liver. Sweating increases dramatically in most people after several months of daily sauna use. Sweating during exercise is not nearly as effective for detoxification because exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous activity inhibits toxin elimination.
Exercise benefits. Saunas provide many of the benefits of exercise with much less expenditure of energy. These include enhanced circulation and oxidation of the tissues. Repeated sauna use can lower elevated blood pressure and improve the elasticity of the arteries. Saunas are most helpful for cardiovascular rehabilitation, arthritis, allergies, skin conditions and chemical sensitivity.
Decongesting the internal organs. Heating the body powerfully shunts blood toward the skin to dissipate heat. This decongests the internal organs and greatly stimulates circulation. Sinuses, joints and many other tissues benefit greatly.
Fever therapy (hyperthermia) for infections. Raising body temperature powerfully assists the body to kill bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. Many people have a low body temperature and, for this reason, cannot get rid of chronic infections. Common sites of infections are the sinuses, ears, eyes, bladder, throat and intestines.
Tumors, radiation poisoning and mutated cells. Hyperthermia also helps kill other types of abnormal cells. Tumors, for example, tolerate heat poorly. Raising body temperature hastens their death. Though not a conventional method, hyperthermia is a well-researched therapy for cancer. Heat also disables or kills cells mutated by radiation or damaged by other toxins.

To strengthen your body’s ability to fight cancer, you need to eat what I ate:
The biggest baddest healthiest salad on the planet!
It consists of raw organic vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts and homemade dressing.
This salad is super healthy, delicious and will fill you up without zapping your energy.

The Raw Vegan Diet was a huge part of my anti-cancer strategy and I ate this salad every day, sometimes twice a day, during the first few years of my Chemo-Free Cancer Battle.

I wanted to put as many vitamins, minerals, nutrients and enzymes into my body as possible and there’s no better way than Juicing and eating fresh raw organic fruits and vegetables.

There’s really no secret formula to this salad, but there are some guidelines to follow:

Absolutely no cheese, meat, or store-bought salad dressing.

It’s also a good idea to avoid fruit which can cause some indention when eaten with vegetables.

It is important that you use organic produce, which is free of toxic chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
And of course wash everything before you eat it. Then just chop it all up and throw it in a bowl!

Note: You’re might need some bigger bowls.  Mine doesn’t look very big in the photo, but it holds over 6 cups. That’s six servings of vegetables! 6-10 servings per day of fruits and vegetables is ideal for cancer prevention and healing.

The Giant Cancer Fighting Salad
-Start with the most nutrient dense dark leafy greens: Kale and Spinach. (Do not exceed 10 cups per day)
-Broccoli (The best source of sulforaphane which promotes liver detoxification, and Indole-3-carbinol, an anticarcinogenic compound )
-Broccoli Sprouts (Concentrated sulforaphane & I3C. Do not exceed four cups of sprouts per day)
-Cauliflower
-Purple cabbage (cheapest source of antioxidants per ounce in the world!)
-Slice of red onion, (yellow or green onions may actually be better)
-Leeks
-Artichokes
-Red, Yellow, or Green Peppers
-Mushrooms Bella, Cremini, Shiitake, etc.
-1/2 an Avocado
-Squash
-Zucchini
-Raw Sunflower seeds (sprouted is better)
-Raw Almonds (sprouted is better)
-Sprouted Garbanzo Beans
-Sprouted Mung Beans
-Sprouted Red or Green Lentils

Then I top it off with either one of these naturally fermented foods:

-Bubbies Old Fashioned Sauerkraut
Bubbies is made with only three ingredients: cabbage, water and salt.  It is fermented and cured with all natural enzymes intact and there is no vinegar added. (Bubbies Kosher dill pickles are super tasty too.)Look for it in the refrigerated section of your local grocer or health food store.

-Kimchi (Pronounced “Kim Chee”)
Kimchi is a spicy Korean version of sauerkraut typically consisting of fermented cabbage, onions, garlic, and pepper. Kim Chi has high concentrations of Vitamin C and Carotene in addition to Vitamin A, B1, B2, Calcium, Iron and beneficial lactic acid bacteria.
Recognized as one of the Top Five “World’s Healthiest Foods” by Health magazine.  Also in the refrigerated section.

Fermented foods are great for digestion and repopulate your intestinal flora with beneficial bacteria essential for health.

Repeat: Absolutely no cheese, meat, fruit, or store-bought salad dressing.

I know it seems weird to exclude fruit.  Here’s why:

Fruits and vegetables need different digestive juices, and when eaten together can create excess acid and indigestion. That is why it’s a good idea to eat them separately, especially if you are sick.  This even includes non-sweet fruits like tomatoes and cucumbers.

My Homemade “Zesty Italian” Salad Dressing
This is hands down the healthiest salad dressing on the planet!
It’s super easy and delicious.  Here’s how you make it:
-Add 1 tbsp Bragg organic extra virgin olive oil to your salad
-Add 1 tbsp Barleans cold-pressed flax oil to your salad
-Lightly drizzle Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar to taste (another super healthy fermented food!)

Then shake on as much of these Four Cancer Fighting Spices as you can stand:
-Organic Oregano
-Organic Garlic Powder
-Organic Turmeric or Curry Powder
-Organic Cayenne Pepper (this will spice it up quick, go easy the first time)

I can’t tell you many times I have eaten this salad!   Over a thousand I bet.
And what’s funny is I have several books filled with of raw vegan recipes, but the Giant Salad ended up being my staple meal.

Most days I ate it for lunch and dinner. I didn’t mind eating the same thing every day because it was simple and quick to prepare.  I didn’t have to put any time into planning my meals. I knew exactly what to buy at the grocery store every week, and it’s so delicious and full of flavor it never got old!

One final note: The salad really doesn’t have to be “giant”, I make big ones because that’s what it takes to fill me up. Not everyone needs to eat that much. A small version is fine too. Just focus on getting as many nutrient dense vegetables in there as you can and make it big enough to satisfy your appetite.

  • Smokeless tobacco can cause gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.

Reproductive and Developmental Risks

  • Using smokeless tobacco during pregnancy can increase the risk for early delivery and stillbirth.
  • Nicotine in smokeless tobacco products that are used during pregnancy can affect how a baby’s brain develops before birth.

Other Risks

  • Using smokeless tobacco increases the risk for death from heart disease and stroke.
  • Smokeless tobacco can cause nicotine poisoning in children.
  • Additional research is needed to examine long-term effects of newer smokeless tobacco products, such as dissolvables and U.S. snus.

  • surpassed breast cancer Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. In 1987, it to become the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
  • An estimated 158,040 Americans are expected to die from lung cancer in 2015, accounting for approximately 27 percent of all cancer deaths.
  • The number of deaths caused by lung cancer has increased approximately 3.5 percent between 1999 and 2012 from 152,156 to 157,499. The number of deaths among men has plateaued but the number is still rising among women. In 2012, there were 86,740 deaths due to lung cancer in men and 70,759 in women.
  • The age-adjusted death rate for lung cancer is higher for men (56.1 per 100,000 persons) than for women (36.4 per 100,000 persons). It also is higher for blacks (48.3 per 100,000 persons) compared to whites (45.6 per 100,000 persons). Black men have a far higher age-adjusted lung cancer death rate than white men, while black and white women have similar rates.

 

Prevalence and Incidence

  • Approximately 402,326 Americans living today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some point in their lives. 3
  • During 2015, an estimated 221,200 new cases of lung cancer were expected to be diagnosed, representing about 13 percent of all cancer diagnoses. 2
  • The majority of living lung cancer patients have been diagnosed within the last five years. Lung cancer is mostly a disease of the elderly. In 2011, 82 percent of those living with lung cancer were 60 years of age or older. 3
  • In 2011, Kentucky had the highest age-adjusted lung cancer incidence rates in both men (112.2 per 100,000) and women (79.3 per 100,000). Utah had the lowest age-adjusted cancer incidence rates in both men and women (34.5 per 100,000 and 25.0 per 100,000, respectively). 4 These state-specific rates were parallel to smoking prevalence rates.
  • Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, accounting for 1.8 million new cases and 1.6 million deaths in 2012. 5
  • The National Institutes of Health estimate that cancer care cost the U.S. an overall $124.6 billion in 2010, $12.1 billion of which is due to lung cancer. Lost productivity due to early death from cancer lead to an additional $134.8 billion in 2005, $36.1 billion of which was caused by lung cancer. 6

Gender Differences

  • More men are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, but more women live with the disease. The rate of new cases in 2011 showed that men develop lung cancer more often than women (64.8 and 48.6 per 100,000, respectively). 3
  • The rate of new lung cancer cases (incidence) over the past 37 years has dropped for men (28 percent decrease), while it has risen for women (98 percent increase). In 1975, rates were low for women, but rising for both men and women. In 1984, the rate of new cases for men peaked (102.1 per 100,000) and then began declining. The rate of new cases for women increased further, did not peak until 1998 (52.9 per 100,000), and has now started to decline.3

 

Racial/Ethnic Differences

  • Blacks are more likely to develop and die from lung cancer than persons of any other racial or ethnic group. The age-adjusted lung cancer incidence rate among black men is approximately 32 percent higher than for white men, even though their overall exposure to cigarette smoke, the primary risk factor for lung cancer, is lower. 3, 7
  • The lung cancer incidence rate for black women is roughly equal to that of white women, despite the fact that they smoke fewer cigarettes. 3, 7

Survival Rates

  • The lung cancer five-year survival rate (17.8 percent) is lower than many other leading cancer sites, such as the colon (65.4 percent), breast (90.5 percent) and prostate (99.6 percent). 3
  • The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 54 percent for cases detected when the disease is still localized (within the lungs). However, only 15 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage. For distant tumors (spread to other organs) the five-year survival rate is only 4 percent. 3
  • More than half of people with lung cancer die within one year of being diagnosed. 3

 

Smoking-Attributable Lung Cancer

  • Smoking, a main cause of small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, contributes to 80 percent and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in women and men, respectively. Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Women are 13 times more likely, compared to never smokers. 8
  • Between 2005 and 2010, an average of 130,659 Americans (74,300 men and 56,359 women) died of smoking-attributable lung cancer each year. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes approximately 7,330 lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers every year. 9
  • Nonsmokers have a 20 to 30 percent greater chance of developing lung cancer if they are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work. 10

Other Causes

  • It has been estimated that active smoking is responsible for close to 90 percent of lung cancer cases; radon causes 10 percent, occupational exposures to carcinogens account for approximately 9 to 15 percent and outdoor air pollution 1 to 2 percent. Because of the interactions between exposures, the combined attributable risk for lung cancer can exceed 100 percent. 11
  • Exposure to radon is estimated to be the second-leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year (range of 8,000 to 45,000). Radon is a tasteless, colorless and odorless gas that is produced by decaying uranium and occurs naturally in soil and rock. The majority of these deaths occur among smokers since there is a greater risk for lung cancer when smokers also are exposed to radon. 12
  • Lung cancer can also be caused by occupational exposures, including asbestos, uranium and coke (an important fuel in the manufacture of iron in smelters, blast furnaces and foundries). The combination of asbestos exposure and smoking greatly increases the risk of developing lung cancer. 13
  • Nonsmoking asbes­tos workers are five times more likely to develop lung cancer than non­smokers not ex­posed to asbestos; if they also smoke, the risk factor jumps to 50 or higher. 11 Environmental exposures also can increase the risk of lung cancer death. 14

Sometimes we need to open the windows on our boxes and look out. If we are brave enough we can open the door and step out of the box.

We have been programmed into staying within our boxes. It’s safe and comfortable and society says it’s “the RIGHT thing to do”. With scientists revealing more treatments involving alternative medicine, it’s time we took a look outside. Every day new technology and research is being accomplished you won’t hear about in main stream news.

The struggle has been hard with Alternative Medicine research and technology being suppressed for so many years. Throughout this time we have been told to think it’s a hoax, these doctors are quacks and they are just out to take your money. Yes, in some cases I will agree. But there are real Holistic/Alternative treatments that work and honest doctors providing the treatment.

How do you think the Chinese survived for so many years? Still to this day they rely on Chinese Medicine, herbs, roots and other natural ingredients to make medicines.

If you think about it, if we all just understood how pharmaceutical companies derived their medicines. It would be a financial downfall for the pharmaceutical companies. If only we would ALL look outside that door. We could really change health care as we westerners know it.

 

For an example is the Medical Marijuana medicine. Big Pharmaceutical companies have lobbied against any form of legalization. They are at their wits end because they cannot patent marijuana and they cannot come up with the absolute formula that works the same as the real thing.

Marijuana is a plant that grows natural on earth and goes back in time as a healing medicine. Pharmaceutical CBD and THC therapies are synthetic.

There are plants on earth that cure illnesses. This is how Big Pharma came up with all the BIG $$$ synthetic medicine, but one drawback is Synthetics come with all the side effects… Some medicines have over 50 pages of CAUTION SIDE EFFECTS.

Natural, there is nothing like the real thing to heal the human body.

I use to be very skeptical, until I actually experienced alternative medicine work. Not cancer but other illnesses. If I would have never opened that door and stepped outside, I would have stayed closed minded to alternative remedies and cures.

Diseases and Death

Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ of the body

  • More than 16 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking.
  • For every person who dies because of smoking, at least 30 people live with a serious smoking-related illness.
  • Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
  • Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Smoking is a known cause of erectile dysfunction in males.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death.

  • Worldwide, tobacco use causes nearly 6 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030.
  • Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day.
  • On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.
  • If smoking continues at the current rate among U.S. youth, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 years of age are expected to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. This represents about one in every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger who are alive today.

Costs and Expenditures

The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year on cigarette advertising and promotions.4

  • In 2014, more than $9 billion was spent on advertising and promotion of cigarettes—nearly $25 million every day, and about $1 million every hour.
  • Price discounts account for nearly 80% of all cigarette marketing. These are discounts paid to cigarette retailers or wholesalers in order to reduce the price of cigarettes to consumers.

Smoking costs the United States billions of dollars each year.

  • Total economic cost of smoking is more than $300 billion a year, including
  • Nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults
  • More than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and exposure to secondhand smoke

State spending on tobacco prevention and control does not meet CDC-recommended levels.

  • States have billions of dollars from tobacco taxes and tobacco industry legal settlements to prevent and control tobacco use. However, states currently use a very small amount of these funds for tobacco control programs.
  • In fiscal year 2017, states will collect $26.6 billion from tobacco taxes and legal settlements but will only spend $491.6 million—less than 2%—on prevention and cessation programs.
  • Currently, only two states (Alaska and North Dakota) fund tobacco control programs at CDC’s “recommended” level. Only one other state (Oklahoma) provides even half the recommended funding. Two states (Connecticut and New Jersey) have allocated no state funds for tobacco use prevention.
  • Spending less than 13% (i.e., $3.3 billion) of the $26.6 billion would fund every state tobacco control program at CDC-recommended levels.

Cigarette Smoking in the US

Percentage of U.S. adults aged 18 years or older who were current cigarette smokers in 2015:8

  • 15.1% of all adults (36.5 million people): 16.7% of males, 13.6% of females
    • Nearly 22 of every 100 non-Hispanic American Indians/Alaska Natives (21.9%)
    • About 20 of every 100 non-Hispanic multiple race individuals (20.2%)
    • Nearly 17 of every 100 non-Hispanic Blacks (16.7%)
    • Nearly 17 of every 100 non-Hispanic Whites (16.6%)
    • About 10 of every 100 Hispanics (10.1%)
    • 7 of every 100 non-Hispanic Asians (7.0%)

Note: Current cigarette smokers are defined as persons who reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes during their lifetime and who, at the time they participated in a survey about this topic, reported smoking every day or some days.

Thousands of young people start smoking cigarettes every day.

  • Each day, more than 3,200 people younger than 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette.
  • Each day, an estimated 2,100 youth and young adults who have been occasional smokers become daily cigarette smokers.

The High Dose Oral Vitamin C Protocol for Cancer (and Nearly Every Other Ailment)

I’m really excited about this post because I’m sharing some really cool stuff about Vitamin C that many people do not know. Or maybe I’m wrong and everyone already knows this but me… We’ll see.

This is a powerful anti-cancer protocol and even if you don’t have cancer, you can use this method to determine how much toxic stress is going on inside your body and how high doses of Vitamin C could dramatically improve your health.

Ok so we all now that Vitamin C (asorbic acid) is good for you right? The body doesn’t produce it, so it has to come from food.

You’ve probably also heard that a severe Vitamin C deficiency leads to scurvy. Early symptoms of scurvy are malaise and lethargy. That’s basically a “general feeling of being unwell” along with tiredness or exhaustion. (Does this sound like you?) After a few months comes shortness of breath and bone pain. Further down the road is muscle pain, skin sores, gum disease, loose teeth, wounds not healing, dry mouth, dry eyes, and emotional problems. In the late stages comes jaundice, edema, fever, convulsions, and eventually death.

Sounds fun right? Fortunately scurvy can be CURED with lemons, limes, oranges, and any other Vitamin C containing food.

Here’s where it gets interesting…

The cure for scurvy was first published in 1617 in The Surgeon’s Mate by English military surgeon John Woodall. And it was completely ignored by the medical community.

In 1753 (136 years later) naval surgeon James Lind published his discovery in, A Treatise of The Scurvy, which was also ignored. The medical establishment insisted that the testimonials of eating citrus fruit to reverse scurvy were merely “anecdotal” and not based on “scientific evidence”.  Sound familiar?

Fortunately James Lind persevered and about 50 years later citrus fruit was finally accepted and used for the prevention and treatment of scurvy on sailing vessels. So, in summary:

The cure for scurvy was ignored for nearly 200 years after its discovery.

Nutrition and natural therapies are still ignored modern medicine. In fact I’d be willing to bet that if you went to see a doctor with some of the symptoms of scurvy that I listed above, you be subjected to a barrage of expensive tests, misdiagnosed, prescribed pharmaceutical drugs, and subjected to treatments for some other disease. This happens all the time. Earlier this year my good friend Tony was told that he probably had cancer or AIDS, turns out it was viral pneumonia. Can you imagine?

But I digress… Let’s get back to Vitamin C.

Here are some common whole food sources of Vitamin C:

Oranges, Kiwi, Canteloupe, Papaya, Strawberries, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kale and Peppers.

“Super foods” with the highest concentration of Vitamin C on planet earth are:

Camu Camu Fruit, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), and Acerola Cherries. In that order.

Vitamin C supports nearly every system in your body: your adrenals, your immune system, your cardiovascular system, and more. Perhaps the most important is that it is a neutralizer of free radicals.

There’s been tons of ground-breaking research on high-dose Vitamin C’s powerful healing and anti-cancer effects by the likes of Fred Klenner MD, Irwin Stone, Linus Pauling, and Ewan Cameron. I don’t have time to get into their stories but I wanted to a least give credit where it’s due. Google them in your spare time. There’s a fascinating Vitamin C phenomenon that most of us don’t know about.

The sicker and/or more toxic you are, the more free radicals you have in your body, and as a result, the more Vitamin C your body will absorb and use. The body keeps a small reserve of Vitamin C available for use when there is increased internal demand, but when you are sick this is quickly depleted.

You may have also heard (or experienced) that if you take too much Vitamin C by mouth you get the runs, aka “chach” which is our family’s abbreviation (and code word) for

“Diarrhea Cha Cha Cha”.

A healthy person can take anywhere from 4-15 grams (4,000-15,000 mg) of Vitamin C in a 24 hour period without getting the runs, but a sick person can tolerate anywhere from 10-20 times more. I’m talking even as much as 100-200 grams per day by mouth.

Have you ever taken Vitamin C when you had a cold and it didn’t help? This is probably because you didn’t take near enough.

Here’s where it gets ridiculous… If you ate something that contained “100% of the USRDA (Recommended Daily Allowance ) of Vitamin C” that seems pretty good right?

It’s not.

The USRDA for Vitamin C is only 75 mg. That’s MILLIGRAMS. A normal healthy person can absorb and use between 4,000-15,000 milligrams per day. So the USRDA is way off on this one. 75 mg is basically what someone decided is the absolute minimum amount to keep you from getting scurvy. This is not an amount that promotes health and optimal body function.

One orange has about 150mg of Vitamin C, about 2 times more than the USRDA. And 1 teaspoon of Camu Camu Powder has about 15 times the USRDA of Vitamin C!

Even though you may not have scurvy, I think it’s safe to assume that many of us may not be getting enough Vitamin C in our diets, the lack of which could be a contributor to

  1. a) feeling lousy or b) serious disease.

High Dose Oral Vitamin C Therapy is taking the maximum dose your body can tolerate before you get the runs. This requires finding your threshold and then backing off a little bit for your daily dose. The clinical term is “titrating to bowel tolerance”.

As some of you know, one of the therapies I used to help my body heal from cancer was Vitamin C IV Therapy, which is a common practice in the natural/alternative cancer treatment world. This involves sitting in chair in a practitioner’s office for two hours with an IV drip containing 50 grams or more of Vitamin C. And while this is a very effective method to get a massive dose of Vitamin C without reaching bowel tolerance and to promote healing in the body, it is time consuming and expensive. I was paying $120 a pop, cash money. And in order for it to be the most effective you need to do it 2-3 times per week for many weeks.

My friend Bill, who’s healing his prostate cancer naturally, turned me on to a simple do-it-yourself Oral Vitamin C Protocol that he was put on by an underground cancer treatment expert whose name I cannot use publicly. Bill initially reached bowel tolerance taking 60 grams per day. After two months his tolerance was down to less than 30 grams per day. That’s a very good sign.

The Vitamin C Toxicity Test & Protocol

This is something everyone should do. Now clearly no one wants diarrhea on purpose, but in this case it can give you some immediate feedback about your internal condition. And it’s super cheap to do!

The simple way to find your tolerance is to take 2-3 grams of Vitamin C powder or crystals (ascorbic acid) every two hours mixed in 8 oz of water. That will give you about 12-18 grams the first day. Make sure you keep track of your doses. Vitamin C powder is highly concentrated. 1 teaspoon is usually about 5 grams of Vitamin C.

The goal is to find your 24 hour limit, not your single dose limit.

The half-life of Vitamin C in the body is about 30 minutes. That means about an hour after you take Vitamin C, your body has used up most of it. So an important key to this protocol is to keep your body saturated with C all day. Dosing every 1-2 hours is ideal.

If you reach bowel tolerance in the first 24 hours, reduce the total dose by 20-25% and continue to take that amount every day  as a maintenance dose (this may be for several days or weeks) until you reach bowel tolerance again at that level. Then reduce by 20% again and continue with that dose until you hit bowel tolerance, and so on.

It works the opposite of what you would expect because you don’t build up a tolerance. The healthier you become, the lower your bowel tolerance for Vitamin C will go.

If you reach bowel tolerance at 10-15 grams or less per day, you’re considered to be in very good shape health wise.

If you follow the steps above and do not reach bowel tolerance the first day, continue to up the dose each day until you get there. If you are seriously sick you may need to dose every hour or 1/2 hour as indicated in the chart below. As you get close to bowel tolerance you will get gassy and should have soft stool. That means you’re very close to your body’s limit and should reduce your dosage a bit.

Something else worth noting in the above chart: If you are under chronic stress or engage in athletic activities like running, weight training, etc. you are likely to have an increased need for Vitamin C and your tolerance will be higher. Even if you are healthy.

Dr. Cathcart also notes that low dose vitamin c had basically no effect, but high dose vitamin c, when taken at 80-90% of bowel tolerance, produced a significant and dramatic reduction of symptoms in his patients.

Experiments

When I first tried this protocol a couple months ago I didn’t reach bowel tolerance until I got to around 34 grams. I worked my way up to taking 12 grams three times per day. I have no idea why my tolerance was that high. I workout 3-5 days per week which would increase my tolerance but perhaps I also had something going on internally… who knows?

Earlier this morning I took 7.5 grams and it produced bowel tolerance for me a couple hours later which actually interrupted my work on this post. Clearly my tolerance is down and if Dr. Cathcart is right, my internal health has improved.

Another one: My kids came home with colds from school two weeks ago. Then my wife got it. One morning I started to feel cold symptoms as well so I took 10 grams of Vitamin c. I felt great all day. Then close to bedtime I started to feel the symptoms again so I took another 10 grams. I did this every day for about a week. I would feel the symptoms in the morning, but I quickly crushed them with 10 grams of vitamin c.  Some days I would take a dose around lunch time as well if I remembered. I was taking 20-30 grams per day for most of the week, I felt good, I was close to bowel tolerance, and the cold never developed. Since then, I’ve done this more times than I can count. Works every time.

What form to take?

Vitamin C comes in several different forms: pure asorbic acid and buffered with minerals.

Buffered C contains mineral salts like calcium asorbate, magnesium asorbate, and sodium asorbate. Buffered C is more alkaline but the excess minerals could be problematic if you are taking mega doses.

I compared three different types (buffered and pure asorbic acid) to see if they had different effects but my tolerance was basically the same for all three. Having said that…

Solaray Vitamin C Powder is 100% pure asorbic acid so it’s extremely tart and citric. Vitamin Shoppe Buffered C-Complex tastes chalky, not citric.

Thompson C Buffered Crystals is buffered with calcium asorbate, it’s citric but not as strong as the pure crystals.

Dr. Cathcart recommends taking pure asorbic acid for the high dose oral protocol. Dr. Thomas Levy recommends sodium asorbate. I think it makes sense to rotate between different types.

*After writing this post it was brought to my attention that most of the asorbic acid in vitamin C powder is made in China from GMO corn. If that is a concern for you, there are several brands of non-GMO vitamin C powders.

Tobacco use can lead to tobacco/nicotine dependence and serious health problems. Quitting smoking greatly reduces the risk of developing smoking-related diseases.

Tobacco/nicotine dependence is a condition that often requires repeated treatments, but there are helpful treatments and resources for quitting.

Smokers can and do quit smoking. In fact, today there are more former smokers than current smokers.

Nicotine Dependence

  • Most smokers become addicted to nicotine, a drug that is found naturally in tobacco.
  • More people in the United States are addicted to nicotine than to any other drug.
  • Research suggests that nicotine may be as addictive as heroin, cocaine, or alcohol.
  • Quitting smoking is hard and may require several attempts.
  • People who stop smoking often start again because of withdrawal symptoms, stress, and weight gain.
  • Nicotine withdrawal symptoms may include:
    • Feeling irritable, angry, or anxious
    • Having trouble thinking
    • Craving tobacco products
    • Feeling hungrier than usual

Health Benefits of Quitting

Smokers’ Attempts to Quit

Among all current U.S. adult cigarette smokers, nearly 7 out of every 10 (68.0%) reported in 2015 that they wanted to quit completely.

  • Since 2002, the number of former smokers has been greater than the number of current smokers.

Percentage of adult daily cigarette smokers who stopped smoking for more than 1 day in 2015 because they were trying to quit:10

  • More than 5 out of 10 (55.4%) of all adult smokers
  • Nearly 7 out of 10 (66.7%) smokers aged 18–24 years
  • Nearly 6 out of 10 (59.8%) smokers aged 25–44 years
  • More than 4 out of 10 (49.6%) smokers aged 45–64 years
  • About 4 out of 10 (47.2%) smokers aged 65 years or older

Percentage of high school cigarette smokers who tried to stop smoking in the past 12 months:

  • More than 4 out of 10 (45.5%) of all high school students who smoke

Ways to Quit Smoking

Most former smokers quit without using one of the treatments that scientific research has shown can work.10 However, the following treatments are proven to be effective for smokers who want help to quit:

  • Brief help by a doctor (such as when a doctor takes 10 minutes or less to give a patient advice and assistance about quitting)
  • Individual, group, or telephone counseling
  • Behavioral therapies (such as training in problem solving)
  • Treatments with more person-to-person contact and more intensity (such as more or longer counseling sessions)
  • Programs to deliver treatments using mobile phones

Medications for quitting that have been found to be effective include the following:

  • Homeopathic Over-the-counter stop smoking aids
  • Nicotine replacement products
  • Over-the-counter (nicotine patch [which is also available by prescription], gum, lozenge)
  • Prescription (nicotine patch, inhaler, nasal spray)
  • Prescription non-nicotine medications: bupropion SR (Zyban®), varenicline tartrate (Chantix®)

Counseling and medication are both effective for treating tobacco dependence, and using them together is more effective than using either one alone.

Quitting Smoking for a Good Reason

Smoking is estimated to cause one-third of all cancer deaths and one-fourth of the fatal heart attacks in the United States. The American Lung Association estimates 350,000 Americans die every year from diseases related to smoking. (My own estimate is closer to 500,000.) Forty percent of smokers die before they reach retirement age.

All the talk about premature death goes over the heads of teen-agers who start smoking and the young adults who won’t quit. The hazards of smoking just seem too far off to them.

That’s why I like to remind young smokers I know that the habit strikes men in the penis and women in the face. That’s right.

  • Smoking damages the blood vessels that supply the penis, so men who smoke have an increased risk of impotence.
  • Smoking damages the capillaries in women’s faces, which is why women smokers develop wrinkles years before nonsmokers. (Male smokers develop wrinkles prematurely, too, but somehow this particular anti-smoking argument seems to score more points with women than with men.)

Years ago, when I kicked the cigarette habit, I didn’t know much about herbal medicine. If I were quitting today, I’d use some herbs to help.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). I don’t have much science here, just a gut belief to back licorice as an anti-smoking aid. I’ve also heard a lot of positive stories about people kicking the habit with the help of licorice.

How does this work? Licorice root happens to look just like an old cheroot cigarette. You can keep a stick of licorice root handy and suck on it in place of a cigarette. I believe it works by helping to satisfy the oral cravings people who are addicted to cigarettes seem to have. If I were still a smoker, I’d give this a try.

It’s interesting that most licorice coming to the United States goes into tobacco products — chewing tobacco and pipe tobacco — presumably for flavor.

You should be aware that while licorice and its extracts are safe for normal use in moderate amounts — the equivalent of up to about three cups of tea a day — long-term use (more than six weeks) or ingestion of excessive amounts can produce headache, lethargy, sodium and water retention, excessive loss of potassium and high blood pressure.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense). A few years back I got a call from an entrepreneur looking for a source of red clover. He wanted literally tons to use as a major ingredient in a tobacco-free chewing tobacco product he planned to market, all tinned up just like the real thing.

Turmeric has widely been toted for its effect on cancer, but new research has shown that its cousin ginger is just as powerful. Not only that, an active compound in ginger has potentially been found to be more effective than some cancer medications at killing cancer. There is even preliminary evidence of some cancer medications being ineffective and actually accelerating the death of cancer patients.

The Power Of Ginger
One study, conducted by Georgia State University found that whole ginger extract was able to reduce the size of a prostate tumor by 56% in mice. In addition to its effect on cancer, ginger was also observed to reduce inflammation and supply the mice with life-enhancing antioxidants.

Another study published in PLoS found that one particular component in ginger known as 6-shogaol is superior to conventional cancer medication, namely chemotherapy, at targeting the root cause of breast cancer malignancy: breast cancer stem cells.

Sometimes referred to as ‘mother cells’, cancer stem cells are the cause of a wide range of cancers, not simply breast cancer. These ‘mother cells’ are responsible for creating the different ‘daughter’ cell types that makeup the tumor colony. While cancer stem cells only constitute .2 to 1% of the cell makeup of the tumor, they seem to be almost ‘immortal’.

What that means is, these cancer stem cells are able to self renew, they are capable of continuous differentiation, are resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic agents, and are capable of splitting off and forming new tumor colonies. The only way to fully ensure that your body is cancer free is to destroy the cancer stem cells within a tumor.

This new study found that the pungent constituent in ginger known as 6-shogaol was very active when it came to anti-cancer stem behavior. This constituent is produced when the root is either dried or cooked, to very common uses for ginger already. But there is something very specific about 6-shogaol that makes it superior to chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

Researchers found that these cancer-destroying effects occurred at concentrations that were non-toxic to non-cancer cells. That means that this particular component of ginger only killed cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone. This makes it very different from conventional cancer treatments that do not display that kind of selective cytotoxicity.

 

When it comes to breast cancer, 6-shogaol significantly affects the cell cycle, resulting in increased cancer cell death. It induces programmed cell death through the induction of autophagy. It also inhibits breast cancer spheroids (lumps) from forming. But that isn’t the only astounding thing about 6-shogaol.

This study also found, that in tests of the cancer drug taxol, it did not show the same level of effectiveness at destroying cancer stem cells and tumors as 6-shogaol. Even when the concentrations of taxol were increased, it was still found that 6-shogaol was 10,000 times more effective at killing cancer stem cells, stopping tumors from forming, and keeping healthy cells alive.

More research needs to be done to show how ‘modern cancer medicine’ is not as effective as natural remedies. We can not be making our bodies sick while trying to cure a disease, that is simply not enough anymore.

Radiation from Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster has apparently traveled across the Pacific.

Researchers reported that radioactive matter — in the form of an isotope known as cesium-134 — was collected in seawater samples from Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach in Oregon. The levels were extremely low, however, and don’t pose a threat to humans or the environment.

 In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a wave of tsunamis that caused colossal damage to Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The disaster released several radioactive isotopes — including the dangerous fission products of cesium-137 and iodine-131 — that contaminated the air and water. The ocean was later contaminated by the radiation.

But cesium-134 is the fingerprint of Fukushima due to its short half-life of two years, meaning the level is cut in half every two years.

“It [cesium-134] disappears much more quickly,” said Dr. Kathryn A. Higley, the head of the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Oregon State University.

 

Cesium-137 has a 30-year half-life. Particles from Chernobyl, nuclear weapons tests, and discharge from other nuclear power plants are still detectable — in small, harmless amounts.

While this is the first time cesium-134 has been detected on US shores, Higley said “really tiny quantities” have previously been found in albacore tuna.

The Oregon samples were collected by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in January and February. Each sample measured 0.3 becquerels, a unit of radioactivity, per cubic meter of cesium-134 — significantly lower than the 50 million becquerels per cubic meter measured in Japan after the disaster.

But those levels have already dropped enough that Japanese fisheries have started to discuss reopening, said Higley.
Cesium-134 was first detected in North America off the shores off Canada in September 2015. One sockeye salmon from a lake in British Columbia tested positive in November, according to the Fukushima InFORM project. The level was “more than 1,000 times lower the action level set by Health Canada,” according to the Statesman Journal.

InFORM — a coalition of scientific and nonprofit organizations, including Woods Hole — has been tracking the course of the radiation plume across the Pacific. They suspect a rise in levels over the coming year, but Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer at Woods Hole, told the Statesman Journal that not even the peak would be a health concern.

Well that could be a long list or a very short one. The bigger BOXED coffee shops as Star$$$$’s really does not appeal to me. Boring, run of the mill. It’s the smaller shops that actually make a good cup of coffee, or maybe it’s the atmosphere that makes it taste so good. Either way the atmosphere is comfy and inviting. Big oversized chairs to relax in and read a book or chat with others while you sip that wonderful drink.. Sounds like home.

Speaking of terminology.. Lord give me a break. If one more establishment comes up with another tongue twisting drink that takes 5 minutes to order and another 20 minutes to make, I will have to stop altogether. What ever happen to the good Old days when a cup of Joe was just that a cup of joe?

Well we are about to find out… When espresso came to America and where did espresso come from originally? Italy you say…  NO.

Espresso first appeared in Italy in the early 20th century. Coffee had already become a necessity to Italian daily life thanks to North African Muslims who brought it through Venice’s ports during the Renaissance. We owe much of the mystique coffee to Venetian merchants who charged wealthy patrons hefty sums to try out this newfangled drink when the first coffeehouses opened in the 1640’s.

Fast forward about 200 years and we find business man Luigi Bezzera tinkering away with this coffee pot to find a way to make coffee faster. In 1903, Bezzera owned a manufacturing business and was frustrated by the time-consuming process of brewing his own coffee at home each morning.

He soon found that adding steam pressure to the machine not only cut down on the brewing process but also produced a stronger, more robust cup of coffee. This new quick-brew process drew out the coffee bean’s best qualities but somehow avoided over extraction.

Bezzera immediately named his invention the “Fast Coffee Machine”. Since the word ‘espresso’ means fast in Italian, the name of the beverage the machine produced was quickly shortened to what we know today.

Unfortunately, Bezzera wasn’t as talented at marketing and sales as he was at engineering. In 1905, another businessman named Desidero Pavoni purchased the machine’s rights from Bezzera and had it patented.

Nowadays you don’t have to travel to Italy to experience Bezzera’s handiwork. The recent boom in espresso’s popularity has brought this Italian treat to every mall and street corner. Next time you decide to pick one up, take a moment to think about the more than 100 years of history inside your cup.

BREWING…

There are several ways to brew the black magic. Easy, put the water in and walk away to grinding, tampering, brewing and mixing the syrups to get that special taste.

For myself I threw out the Drip coffee maker and opted for the french press carafe. To have a rich full bodied aroma wafting through the house is like a beautiful melody running through your mind over and over.

I still say the best was the Percolator, back in the day. I can remember my grandma making coffee on the stove. Watching the coffee going up into the glass bubble on top and back down again, becoming darker in color each time it reached the bubble. Then the electric percolator my mom used was the highlight of the 60’s. Same technique just plug it in and watch it go.. No more standing by the stove and waiting for that perfect cup of coffee.

The Automatic drip machine came into the light. Wow everyone thought this was the BOMB.. Yes it gave you your pot of coffee in 5 minutes. But where was that rich wafting aroma? Gone with the 5 minute cup.

Then we step up to the home brew station for espresso. Ohh, what magic we have in our possession. Soon every house had an espresso machine big and small.
