Cincinnati nightclub shooting: 1 dead, 15 people injured

Several unidentified shooters opened fire at a Cincinnati nightclub early Sunday, killing one person and wounding 15 others, officials said.

The shooters escaped the melee at club Cameo and they remained on the run Sunday.

“Several local men got into some type of dispute inside the bar and it escalated into shots being fired from several individuals,” Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said during a Sunday news conference. “As a result there were 16 people that sustained gunshot injuries one of which is deceased. A total of 15 others that were injured, one in extremely critical condition.”

The man who was killed was named as 27-year-old Obryan Spikes. His family had been notified, Isaac said.  Assistant Fire Chief Roy Winston said numerous other club-goers were injured fleeing the scene. “I’m confident that while our hearts are broken, that our spirit is not,” Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley said.

The nightclub employed off-duty police officers to patrol the parking lot, Isaac said, and individuals entering the club were routinely patted down and wanded. Despite the precautions, Isaac said “Several firearms were able to be brought inside the bar.”

The motive for the shooting remained unclear, but Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate said there was no indication the attack was terrorism related. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m., WLWT reported.

“We are in the middle of a very horrific situation that occurred at the nightclub with multiple victims,” Neudigate said. “It’s going to be a long night for our homicide units to investigate.”

The victims were taken to four area hospitals. Some drove themselves and others were taken by ambulance. WLWT reported at least one of the wounded was in critical condition at a hospital.

Capt. Kim Williams said authorities were not sure what prompted the shooting.

“Saturday night, it is a very young crowd,” Williams said. “We have had incidents here in the past, but this is by far the worst.”

Don’t Let Your Wedding Become a Disaster…

Top 10 Wedding Don’ts:

Don’t Let Your Wedding Become a Disaster…
By: Denise Schipani

Adhere to these guidelines and make sure your wedding is a hit for you and your guests.

Of course you want to have a fabulous big day, so you must plan accordingly to avoid any potential pitfalls along the way. Take a look at these all-too-common “please don’ts.” (Psst! They’re all avoidable.) Remember: Forewarned is forearmed!

1. Don’t be superbride.

You’re smart, you’re focused, you’re energetic. But you’re still one woman. Superbrides—those engaged gals who devote every waking hour to wedding planning, brushing aside all offers of help—eventually run out of steam and end up near the big day with favors unassembled, invitations unstamped, shoes undyed, heads uncounted. How to avoid this fate? Call in your trusty sidekicks before you’re really scrambling. Here’s a little secret: People want to help. So do yourself a huge favor and accept their kind offers. Then, once you’ve got a cadre of pals stuffing your envelopes, sit back and have your toenails polished. You deserve it.

2. Don’t have a cash bar.

Forcing guests to reach into their sequined clutches every time they want to enjoy a celebratory champagne or a refreshing gin and tonic is just plain rude. Think of it like this: You invite people to a party—your wedding, for heaven’s sake!—and then you ask them to shell out for part of the fun. It’s a recipe for bad feelings! Keep in mind that you don’t have to have a top-shelf bar; in fact, there are plenty of other ways to serve and save. You could offer wine and beer only or create a signature cocktail. You might have an open bar during the cocktail hour only and serve wine at dinner. Ask your caterer to suggest lower-cost options.

3. Don’t include registry info on invites.

Registering is a good thing for everyone. When gift buyers are steered to the things you actually want and need, it saves them time—and saves you from having to contend with a pile of cut-crystal candy bowls. Registry info, however, does not belong on your wedding invitation. Why? Giving wedding gifts is never mandatory, though the vast majority of attendees will naturally want to do just that. Best way to get the message across is by word of mouth on the part of your mother or your bridesmaids or on bridal-shower invites.

4. Don’t be bossy with your bridesmaids.

In the most traditional sense, your bridesmaids, in particular your maid of honor, are there to stand up for you as you take your vows, to act as witnesses to this solemn event. Somewhere along the line, bridesmaids have become, well, more like maids, and to an extent there’s nothing wrong with that. These are your sisters, cousins, best friends, future in-laws, and there’s something sort of sweet about the way they gather around you, wearing finery you picked out, helping you pin up your bustle, holding your flowers. But some brides ask (or worse, demand) far more: They expect their bridesmaids to shell out for needlessly expensive outfits, to run endless errands, to wear their hair just so, to attend (and buy gifts for) countless all-for-you parties. Don’t let this happen. Be sensitive to how you’d feel if the tables were turned. Gifts to the maids are always welcome, of course, but a little kindness and care go a lot further than any pashmina shawl or monogrammed trinket.

I once attended a lovely wedding in a quaint wooden church in a rural area. Beautiful. Then I checked my invite. What?! The reception was scheduled for much later in the day, at a location that was a good 45-minute drive away. Sometimes it can be hard to plan a perfectly seamless schedule, especially if your heart is set on sites that are wildly inconvenient to one another or if your ceremony and reception times don’t line up. But do your best. If you really must wed at, say, your childhood church, confine your search for reception locales to local spots. If that’s truly impossible or if you can’t avoid a time gap, provide transportation and/or a comfortable spot for guests to hang out while they wait.

6. Don’t plan a difficult destination wedding.

Ah, the lure of the exotic faraway wedding—you can just picture it, can’t you? Exchanging vows on top of a volcano in Hawaii… or how about in a ski gondola or on a majestic slope in the Austrian Alps? Hmmm, nice idea, but will Grandma Gert be up to the trip? Will your college pals drain their bank accounts to get there? No, and no. Destination weddings can be terrific, but as with any wedding, it’s not only about you, it’s also about your guests. While some friends and families welcome—and can afford—an Alpine adventure, others will end up resenting the cost and hassle or simply decline the invitation. Make it easy for everyone by (a) choosing a well-traveled locale, (b) planning well in advance and (c) providing information and help (securing group rates, for example). Bon voyage!

7. Don’t go DIY crazy.

You know that clever bride who sewed her own dress and designed and made her own invitations? Or the one who baked her own three-tiered cake? Everyone’s in awe of the girls who can do these things, and I say good for them—if they did it because they really, really wanted to, and if they managed not to get stressed out. The point of these projects is to use your craft/sewing/baking/designing skills to save money and to put a one-of-a-kind stamp on some aspect of the wedding. But if you are really not the hands-on type, don’t drive yourself crazy hot-gluing tulle and folding fiddly favors until 3 a.m. Do only what you can, and beg, borrow or buy the rest.

8. Don’t let parents steamroll your invite list.

Back in the days when parents footed the bill and brides were barely out of high school, the guest list was more Mom and Dad’s idea of a good party than the couple’s. Times have changed, but that doesn’t stop some pushy parents from insisting on having the whole book club, golf club or garden club at the wedding. Brush up on your negotiating skills and start early. Once you have a budget in mind, you can rough out the number of guests it’s feasible to invite. Then ask both sets of parents for invite lists, in order of preference, so you can cut from the bottom if necessary. Stay in charge!

9. Don’t forget about your fiancé.

It may not seem like something you’d do, but plenty of women surprise themselves. We’ve got our heads stuck in a glossary of floral terms (stephanotis? anemone?) when all our men know is that there will be flowers at the wedding. We’re neglecting our regular TV and pizza night in favor of dress fittings. Hey, listen up: You’re not just having a wedding, you’re getting married—to that guy over there, sitting on the couch, munching a cold slice of pizza. Put aside the bridal to-do lists and go give him a hug, would you? This is not just party-planning time, it’s major life transition time. So talk to each other. Talk about your life together. Talk about what color you want to paint the bedroom, what you want to name the puppy you’ll adopt—whatever. Anything but flowers and crab-cake appetizers, please.

10. Don’t bow to bridal peer pressure.

It’s insidious. You just got back from a friend’s wedding and you’re battling the green monster: She had an eight-piece band while you booked a DJ. She had Dom Perignon, you’re having sparkling wine. Well, stop right there. If you scramble your plans to best hers: 1) You’ll go over budget, and 2) You’ll hate yourself for it. Worse, you’ll veer off the course you set for your own dream wedding. She made her wedding hers. And you’re making your wedding yours. And that’s an “I do!”

Now for the good news: Here are some things you must do!

Practice self-care.

Do whatever it takes to help you unwind. That could mean a solo hike or a night out with friends. A day off at the movies or a too-expensive-but-who-cares massage.

Be organized.

It doesn’t matter whether you use a paper grocery bag or the fanciest new software. Stay organized, and sleep better at night.

Stick to your budget.

Early on, sit down with your fiancé and work out how much you can afford to spend and where to allot your money. Build in some room for surprises and extras that inevitably pop up.

Negotiate with vendors.

You don’t have to accept a quoted price. Ask if there can be substitutions that may bring the fee down.

Get him involved.

What are his interests? Perhaps music — give him the band or DJ assignment. If it’s food, he can research caterers. After all, the wedding belongs to the two of you!
Be grateful.

You’ll get lots of good wishes, gifts and offers of help. Say thank you to each and every one. You’re feeling good right now, so share all that beautiful love.

Dream big.

Not just about your wedding, but about your life. This is the next, greatest chapter in the story of you. Imagine how wonderful married life can be — and you’re almost there.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Honey

By Dr. Mercola

benefits of honey, health benefits of honey, manuka honey benefits

Honey has been valued as a natural sweetener long before sugar became widely available in the 16th century. Honey production flourished in ancient Greece and Sicily, for instance, while animals other than humans – bears, badgers, and more – have long raided honeybee hives, risking stings for the sweet reward.1

Honey is truly a remarkable substance, made even more extraordinary by the process with which it is made. This blend of sugar, trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids is quite unlike any other sweetener on the planet.

And while honey is high in fructose, it has many health benefits when used in moderation (assuming you’re healthy). Before I delve into those, here’s a brief “lesson” on how honey is made…

How Honey Is Made (Fascinating!)
It takes about 60,000 bees, collectively traveling up to 55,000 miles and visiting more than 2 million flowers, to gather enough nectar to make one pound of honey.2

Once the nectar is gathered, the bee stores it in its extra stomach where it mixes with enzymes, and then passes it (via regurgitation) to another bee’s mouth. This process is repeated until the nectar becomes partially digested and is then deposited into a honeycomb.

Once there, the honeybees fan the liquid nectar with their wings, helping the water to evaporate and create the thick substance you know as “honey.” This honeycomb is then sealed with a liquid secretion from the bee’s abdomen, which hardens into beeswax. As Live Science reported:3

“Away from air and water, honey can be stored indefinitely, providing bees with the perfect food source for cold winter months.”
There are more than 300 kinds of honey in the US, each with a unique color and flavor that is dependent upon the nectar source. Lighter colored honeys, such as those made from orange blossoms, tend to be milder in flavor while darker-colored honeys, like those made from wildflowers, tend to have a more robust flavor.4

5 Honey Facts You Might Not Know
Honey, particularly in its raw form, offers unique health benefits that you might not be aware of. Among them…

1. Honey Makes Excellent Cough “Medicine”

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists honey as a demulcent, which is a substance that relieves irritation in your mouth or throat by forming a protective film.5

Research shows honey works as well as dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in over the counter cough medications, to soothe cough and related sleeping difficulties due to upper respiratory tract infections in children.

2. Honey Can Treat Wounds

Honey was a conventional therapy in fighting infection up until the early 20th century, at which time its use slowly vanished with the advent of penicillin. Now the use of honey in wound care is regaining popularity, as researchers are determining exactly how honey can help fight serious skin infections.

Honey has antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidants activities that make it ideal for treating wounds. In the US, Derma Sciences uses Manuka honey for their Medihoney wound and burn dressings.

Manuka honey is made with pollen gathered from the flowers of the Manuka bush (a medicinal plant), and clinical trials have found this type of honey can effectively eradicate more than 250 clinical strains of bacteria, including resistant varieties such as:

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
MSSA (methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus)
VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
Compared to other types of honey, Manuka has an extra ingredient with antimicrobial qualities, called the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). It is so called because no one has yet been able to discover the unique substance involved that gives it its extraordinary antibacterial activity.

Honey releases hydrogen peroxide through an enzymatic process, which explains its general antiseptic qualities, but active Manuka honey contains “something else” that makes it far superior to other types of honey when it comes to killing off bacteria.7

That being said, research shows that any type of unprocessed honey helped wounds and ulcers heal. In one study, 58 of 59 wounds showed “remarkable improvement following topical application of honey.”8

3. Honey Improves Your Scalp

Honey diluted with a bit of warm water was shown to significantly improve seborrheic dermatitis, which is a scalp condition that causes dandruff and itching. After applying the solution every other day for four weeks, “all of the patients responded markedly.” According to the researchers:9

“Itching was relieved and scaling was disappeared within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks. In addition, patients showed subjective improvement in hair loss.”
4. Help Boost Your Energy

A healthy, whole-food diet and proper sleep is the best recipe for boundless energy, but if you’re looking for a quick energy boost, such as before or after a workout, honey can suffice. This is particularly true for athletes looking for a “time-released fuel” to provide energy over a longer duration.10

5. Reduce Allergy Symptoms

Locally produced honey, which will contain pollen spores picked up by the bees from local plants, introduces a small amount of allergen into your system. Theoretically, this can activate your immune system and over time can build up your natural immunity against it.

The typical recommendation is to take about a teaspoon-full of locally produced honey per day, starting a few months PRIOR to the pollen season, to allow your system to build up immunity. And the key here is local.

This approach only works because it has pollen of local plants you may be allergic to. Honey from other parts of the country simply won’t work. While research on this has yielded conflicting results, one study found that, during birch pollen season, compared to the control group, the patients using birch pollen honey experienced:11

60 percent reduction in symptoms
Twice as many asymptomatic days
70 percent fewer days with severe symptoms
50 percent decrease in usage of antihistamines
Interestingly enough, there were few differences between the two honey groups (those who took regular honey, versus those who took honey that contained birch pollen.) However, the birch pollen honey group used less histamines than those who used regular honey. The authors concluded:

“Patients who pre-seasonally used birch pollen honey had significantly better control of their symptoms than did those on conventional medication only, and they had marginally better control compared to those on regular honey. The results should be regarded as preliminary, but they indicate that birch pollen honey could serve as a complementary therapy for birch pollen allergy.”
Honey for Herpes
Good-quality honey offers several topical wound-care benefits that can explain some of its success as a remedy for herpes sores:

It draws fluid away from your wound
The high sugar content suppresses microorganism growth
Worker bees secrete an enzyme (glucose oxidase) into the nectar, which then releases low levels of hydrogen peroxide when the honey makes contact with your wound
In one study, 16 adult subjects with a history of recurrent labial and genital herpes attacks used honey to treat one attack, and a commonly prescribed antiviral drug, Acyclovir cream, during another. (It’s important to realize that neither the drug nor the honey will actually cure genital herpes. They only treat the symptoms.)

Interestingly, honey provided significantly better treatment results. For labial herpes, the mean healing time was 43 percent better, and for genital herpes, 59 percent better than acyclovir. Pain and crusting was also significantly reduced with the honey, compared to the drug. Two cases of labial herpes and one case of genital herpes remitted completely with the honey treatment, whereas none remitted while using acyclovir.12

3 DIY Honey Home Remedies
Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture, making it an ideal addition to moisturizers, shampoos, and conditioners. Along with its antimicrobial properties, honey makes a wonderful addition to homemade personal care products. The National Honey Board has a few you can try out for yourself:13

1. Honey Hair Conditioner: Mix ½ cup honey with ¼ cup olive oil. Work a small amount through your hair until coated. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo as normal and rinse.

2. Honey Body Moisturizer: Mix 5 tablespoons honey, 2 tablespoons rose oil, and 2 cups almond oil in a medium-sized bottle. Apply as needed onto wet skin.

3. Honey Almond Scrub: Mix 3 teaspoons honey, 1 teaspoon olive oil, and 6 ½ tablespoons of finely crushed almonds. Rub the exfoliating scrub onto your face gently and rinse with warm water.
The Organic Consumers Association has also published this simple honey lemon cough syrup that’s useful to keep on hand during the winter months:14

Honey Lemon Cough Syrup

Lemon helps promote health by quickly alkalinizing your body, and honey will kill most bacteria while soothing your throat. This is a perfect choice for a quick cough remedy.

Put a pint of raw honey in a pan on the stove on VERY low heat (Do not boil honey as this changes its medicinal properties).
Take a whole lemon and boil in some water in a separate pan for 2-3 minutes to both soften the lemon and kill any bacteria that may be on the lemon skin.
Let the lemon cool enough to handle then cut it in slices and add it to the pint of honey on the stove.
Let mixture cook on warm heat for about an hour.
Then strain the lemon from the honey making sure all lemon seeds are removed.
Let cool, then bottle in a jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.
This syrup will keep for 2 months in the refrigerator. To soothe a cough, take 1/2 teaspoon for a 25 lb. child and 1 teaspoon for a 50 lb. child, about 4 times a day, or as often as needed. Adults can take 1-tablespoon doses.
Is Honey a Healthy Natural Sweetener? How to Avoid Fake Honey
As far as natural sweeteners go, honey does have a place. The main thing to remember when it comes to honey is that not all honey is created equal. The antibacterial activity in some honeys is 100 times more potent than in others, while processed refined honey will lack many of these beneficial properties altogether. Your average domestic “Grade A” type honey found in the grocery store is likely highly processed.

It’s also been found that more than 75 percent of the honey on American supermarket shelves may be ultra-processed—to the point that all inherent medicinal properties are completely gone—and then smuggled into the country by the barrel drum. Nearly all of this “fake” honey is made in China. Some of these brokers will even create bogus country of origin papers. All 60 jars of “honey” tested by Food Safety News (FSN) came back negative for pollen, which is a clear sign of ultra-processing.15 According to FSN:

“The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world’s food safety agencies. The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others have also ruled that without pollen, there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.”
In their investigation, FSN discovered the following:

76 percent of honey samples bought at grocery stores (such as TOP Food, Safeway, QFC, Kroger, Harris Teeter, etc.) were absent of pollen
77 percent of the honey from big box stores (like Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Target) were absent of pollen
100 percent of the honey sampled from drug stores (like Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and CVS Pharmacy) were absent of pollen
The good news is all of the samples from farmers markets, co-ops, and natural stores like Trader Joe’s had the full, proper compliment of pollen, as did organic brands from common grocery stores. When choosing honey, be sure it is raw, unfiltered, and 100% pure, from a trusted source.

Honey Should Be Consumed Only in Moderation
Honey has many healthy attributes, but it is also high in fructose, averaging around 53 percent. Each teaspoon of honey has nearly four grams of fructose, which means it can exacerbate pre-existing insulin resistance and wreak havoc on your body if consumed in excess. So when consuming honey, carefully add the total grams of fructose (including fruits) that you consume each day, and stay below 25 grams of total fructose per day.

Keep in mind, though, that if you have insulin resistance (i.e. if you are taking drugs for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, or if you’re overweight) you’d be better off avoiding all sweeteners, including honey, since any sweetener can decrease your insulin sensitivity and worsen your insulin resistance. If you’re healthy, however, eating raw honey in moderation could provide many of the benefits listed above.

10 Healing Herbs You Can Grow Indoors

10 Healing Herbs You Can Grow Indoors

Ask around like we did and sure enough you begin to acquire a valuable database of folk remedies. Everyone we asked had a home remedy or two; a grandmother’s remedy to cure gout (apple cider vinegar), a remedy to stop diarrhea within minutes (turmeric), an old Mexican cure for a nagging cough (garlic).

Herbs are known for their culinary, medicinal and relaxation properties. They flavor food and provide numerous health benefits. However, not many people can manage to have fresh herbs throughout the year and they use dried ones. This is mainly due to the climate. Fortunately, you can grow your own herbs indoors and have a fresh supply all year long. Fresh herbs are rich in nutrients, color, and flavor. Here’s how to grow herbs indoors.

Growing Herbs Indoors
The process of growing plants indoors in water is known as hydroponics. So, here are the steps:

You should take some herb cutting and put them in glass bottles. Add plain water, either rain water or tap water which has been left to air overnight. Avoid using tight-fitting containers.
Remove the lower leaves because they can rot in water. You should change the water once a week. When the roots start growing, don’t change the water.
You can also soak a few willow branches in warm water overnight and then use to speed up the growth.
Place the jar on a bright light.

1. Basil
You can easily grow basil indoors. It is packed with antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties and it provides numerous benefits. Simply, cut off the stem you want to root before the parent plant flowers.

2. Lemon Balm
This herb is known for its fresh smell, which keeps the mosquitoes and insects away. You should pick several cuttings in spring or fall and put them in water in a bright place. Lemon balm can help digestion and reduce anxiety. Bear in mind that you should change the water once a week.

3. Oregano
The process of growing oregano is similar to that of basil. You should take fresh oregano cuttings in water and pinch the growing tips as it grows. It has various health benefits which come as a result of its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties.

4. Peppermint
This is probably the easiest herb you can grow indoors. All you should do is place some fresh peppermint cuttings in water. You can use it in your salads and desserts. It will soothe bowel syndrome and reduce the stress levels. Moreover, you will be protected from spiders and mice as they don’t like the smell.

5. Rosemary
Its thick stems will take a while to grow roots and should be placed in a sunny spot. You can use it in soups, as a garnish or meat rub. It can improve the brain health, boost memory, and promote hair growth.

6. Sage
You can grow your own sage indoors by taking a few sprigs in the spring from an outdoor plant and placing them in shallow water. Make sure you don’t let the leaves touch the water. This amazing herb will help you with anxiety, and it will improve the memory.

7. Spearmint
This herb requires the same growing process as peppermint. It is extremely beneficial for post-menopausal women and can balance sex hormones.

8. Stevia
Take organic stevia cuttings and put them in a glass jar full of water. Stevia doesn’t like the cold, so make sure to put it in a consistently warm spot. It will help you stop smoking.

9. Tarragon
Grow tarragon by taking spring cuttings after fresh growth appears. You should place it on a warm and bright spot. Tarragon is packed with antibacterial properties and it can regulate blood sugar levels and treat metabolic syndrome.

10. Thyme
You should take cuttings in the mid-spring or early summer before the parent plants flowers. Keep it moist to prevent drying out. This herb is beneficial as it can lower blood pressure, prevent tooth decay, and cause cancer cell death.

Fermented Foods May Be a Key Component of an Anti-Cancer Diet

By Dr. Mercola

Slowly but surely, scientists are increasingly starting to focus on the influence of nutrition on cancer. Mounting evidence supports the notion that a diet high in healthy fats and low in net carbohydrates (total carbs minus fiber, i.e. non-fiber carbs) may significantly lower your risk by improving mitochondrial and metabolic function.

Fermented foods are also gaining recognition as an important anti-cancer adjunct. The beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods have been shown particularly effective for suppressing colon cancer, but may also inhibit cancers of the breast, liver, small intestine and other organs.

For example, butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid created when microbes ferment dietary fiber in your gut, has been shown to induce programmed cell death of colon cancer cells,1 and cultured milk products may reduce your risk of bladder cancer by about 29 percent.2

Cultured Raw Milk Does Your Body Good

In the case of cultured dairy, lactobcillus and bifidobacterium are primary sources of probiotics in cultured milk products, and these beneficial bacteria have been shown to induce changes reflecting an increase in carbohydrate metabolism.

Both of these bacteria also facilitate excretion of toxins such as Bisphenol A (BPA), and lactobacillus strains in particular may help prevent heavy metal toxicity by binding and excreting these metals.

They’ve even been shown to reduce the toxicity of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HCA) — cancer causing compounds found in charred meats.3

Kimchi (a Korean fermented cabbage dish) contains probiotics shown to help with the detoxification of organophosphorus pesticides. It also breaks down sodium nitrate, a food preservative associated with increased cancer risk.4

Microbial Metabolism Can Influence Your Cancer Risk

Research by Johanna Lampe, Ph.D., at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center suggests microbial metabolism may affect your cancer risk for better or worse in many different ways, by influencing:5,6

DNA repair Carcinogen metabolism / detoxification Hormone regulation Inflammation
Immune function Apoptosis (programmed cell death) Microbial proliferation Microbial differentiation

Moreover, your gut microbiome — which contains 100 times as many genes as your body’s total genome — is involved in important chemical reactions that your gut enzymes cannot perform, including fermentation and sulfate reduction.

Importantly, your gut microbiome helps generate new compounds (bacterial metabolites) that can have either a beneficial or detrimental impact on your health.

On the upside, some of these compounds act as sources of energy and/or help regulate your metabolism and reduce inflammation. Others can cause oxidative stress.7

Food components known to produce beneficial bacterial metabolites include dietary fiber, plant lignans, anthocyanins and linoleic acid, just to name a few.

As noted by Lampe, “availability of nutrients or bioactive substances important for health can be influenced by gut microbiota,” and “understanding the impact of the bacterial metabolites on regulatory pathways may help guide future diet and cancer prevention strategies.”8
Chronic Inflammation Raises Your Risk for Cancer

Reducing inflammation is one important anti-cancer feature of fermented foods. As explained by Stephanie Maxson, senior clinical dietitian at MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center, “Prolonged inflammation can damage your body’s healthy cells and tissue, and weaken your immune system.”

And, since your immune system is the first line of defense, a weakened immune system is what allows for diseases such as cancer to get a foothold in the first place; hence, reducing inflammation is a foundational aspect of cancer prevention.

One group of microbes that appear important for maintaining healthy immune function is the clostridial group of microbes. Ironically enough, this group is related to clostridium difficile, which can cause severe and life-threatening intestinal infections.

But whereas C. difficile prompts chronic inflammation, the clostridial clusters actually help maintain a healthy and well-functioning gut barrier, preventing inflammatory agents from entering your bloodstream.9 Factors that promote chronic inflammation in your body include but are not limited to:

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Poor dietary choices

Inflammation and Microbiome Also Play a Role in Type 1 Diabetes

The connection between your microbiome and inflammation has also become evident in type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes) which, contrary to type 2 diabetes, is an autoimmune disorder.

The root cause of type 1 diabetes has been a medical mystery, but more recent research suggests the disease may be rooted in gut dysfunction. As reported by Medical News Today:10

“[I]ndividuals with type 1 diabetes show increased intestinal permeability and changes in the microvilli, which are microscopic, finger-like projections from the gut lining. Although the reasons behind these modifications are unclear, errant gut bacteria are currently the prime suspects.”

To investigate the impact gut bacteria may have on the development of type 1 diabetes, Italian researchers examined the gut flora and inflammation levels in 54 type 1 diabetics.

All had endoscopies and biopsies taken from their duodenum, the early section of the intestinal tract, and all were on a similar diet at the time of the procedures. The results revealed they had significantly more inflammation than healthy controls and even patients diagnosed with celiac disease.

Their gut flora was also significantly different, with fewer proteobacteria (a group of organisms that includes escherichia, which help produce vitamin K, and salmonella, which is associated with food poisoning) and higher levels of firmicutes (a group of bacteria that include bacilli and streptococcus). According to the featured article:11

“The next step will be to understand whether the changes in the gut are caused by type 1 diabetes or vice versa. Either way, the study marks a step forward in our understanding of this condition.

As Piemonti notes: ‘We don’t know if type 1 diabetes’ signature effect on the gut is caused by or the result of the body’s own attacks on the pancreas.

By exploring this, we may be able to find new ways to treat the disease by targeting the unique gastrointestinal characteristics of individuals with type 1 diabetes.'”

Key Features of an Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Cancer Diet

Many cancer experts, including MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) now promote anti-inflammatory diets, placing focus on:12

  • Organic plant foods and traditionally fermented and cultured foods. AICR recommends making sure at least two-thirds of your plate are plant foods, and to eat at least one small serving of fermented food each day.
  • Limiting processed foods and eating a diet of whole, fresh foods cooked from scratch instead.
  • Avoiding sodas, sport drinks and other sugary beverages, including fruit juices.
  • Balancing your omega-3 and omega-6 ratios. For most, this means increasing your intake of animal-based omega-3 from fatty fish low in mercury and other contaminants, such as wild-caught Alaskan salmon, anchovies and sardines, and reducing consumption of omega-6 fats, abundant in refined vegetable oils (fried foods and processed foods).
  • Limiting red meat and avoiding processed meats (such as deli meats, bacon, sausage, hot dogs and pepperoni). To lower your protein consumption — which can be an important factor in everything from premature aging to cancer — consider replacing some of the red meat you eat with fish instead, which is lower in protein.

Gut Bacteria Mediate Your Risk for Certain Types of Colon Cancer

Eating a plant-based, fiber-rich diet is key for preventing colon cancer in particular, and the reason for this is directly related to the way fiber affects your gut microbiome. As recently reported by Medical News Today:13

“Studies have shown that a diet high in red and processed meats may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, while a high-fiber diet — rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains — has been associated with a lower risk of the disease. Previous research has suggested that one way by which diet influences the risk of colorectal cancer is through the changes it makes to the gut microbiome (the population of microorganisms that live in the intestine).

The new study from Dr. [Shuji] Ogino and team supports this association, after finding that individuals who followed a high-fiber diet were at a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer tumors containing the bacterium F. nucleatum.”

F. nucleatum has been shown to be prevalent in the stool of people who eat a Western-style, low-fiber diet, and these people also have a higher risk of colon cancer. “We theorized that the link between a prudent diet and reduced colorectal cancer risk would be more evident for tumors enriched with F. nucleatum than for those without it,” Ogino says.

To test this theory, the team analyzed health and nutritional data from more than 137,200 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. They then analyzed tumor samples obtained from participants who developed colorectal cancer during the study, to ascertain whether F. nucleatum was present.

Food frequency questionnaires, which participants filled out at two- to four-year intervals, were used to calculate nutrient and fiber intake. Participants who ate a “prudent” diet, defined as being high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, had a significantly reduced risk of colorectal cancer-containing F. nucleatum, compared to those who ate a Western-style, low-fiber diet.

That said, the prudent diet did not affect the risk of developing colorectal cancer that was free of F. nucleatum. According to Ogino, these findings “point to a much broader phenomenon — that intestinal bacteria can act in concert with diet to reduce or increase the risk of certain types of colorectal cancer.”14

Which Fermented Foods Have the Greatest Impact on Your Microbiome?

In a recent episode of the BBC “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” program, 30 volunteers agreed to eat a certain type of fermented food for one month, to see how it would affect their gut microbiome. The volunteers were split into three groups, receiving either a commercial probiotic drink, traditionally fermented kefir or inulin-rich foods such as Jerusalem artichokes, chicory root, onions, garlic and leek. (Inulin is a prebiotic fiber.) As reported by the BBC:15

“What we found at the end of our study was fascinating. The group consuming the probiotic drink saw a small change in one bacteria type known to be good for weight management, bacteria called lachnospiraceae. However, this change wasn’t statistically significant. But our other two groups did see significant changes. The group eating foods rich in prebiotic fiber saw a rise in a type of bacteria known to be good for general gut health — something that is in line with other studies.

Our biggest change, however, was in the kefir group. These volunteers saw a rise in a family of bacteria called lactobacillales. We know that some of these bacteria are good for our overall gut health and that they can help conditions such as traveler’s diarrhea and lactose intolerance.”

Store-Bought Versus Homemade

Next, the BBC team sent out a variety of homemade and store-bought fermented foods and beverages for laboratory testing, which revealed “striking differences” in microbial composition. Not surprisingly, the store-bought versions contained very minute levels of beneficial bacteria, while the homemade versions were rich in a wide array of probiotics.

One of the primary reasons for this difference has to do with the fact that commercial products are pasteurized to prolong shelf-life and ensure safety, and pasteurization kills the very bacteria the products are supposed to supply.

This is precisely why I strongly recommend making sure you’re buying traditionally fermented, unpasteurized products or, better yet, make them yourself. It’s far easier than you might think, and can save you a lot of money to boot. For basic instructions, see my previous article, “How to Make Your Own Fermented Vegetables,” or watch the video demonstration below.

Nourish Your Microbiome to Optimize Your Health

Mounting research suggests that your microbiome — colonies of bacteria, viruses and other microbes living in your gut — may be one of the preeminent factors determining your health and longevity.

Hence, feeding beneficial gut bacteria with a healthy, fiber-rich diet and fermented foods, and boycotting processed foods and animal foods raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) — both of which tend to have an adverse effect on your microbiome — may be keystone strategies for optimal health and disease prevention, including cancer.

Vegan Flourless Chocolate Cake

Vegan “Flourless” Chocolate Cake Recipe

Video By Granny PottyMouth

Vegan Chocolate Cake

A deep dark chocolate cake recipe. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. And the best part? It’s not only gluten-free, but vegan as well. And it’s technically a flourless chocolate cake (which for some retro-fueled reason still conjures the term sexy thanks to Sarah Jessica Parker).

In full disclosure (hey, I vet my recipes okay?) I added a scant amount of buckwheat flour to help it set up without eggs, but buckwheat isn’t technically a grain, is it? More of a groat, a fruit kernel. In fact, buckwheat is a cousin to sorrel and rhubarb. I could try to impress you with shout-outs to the Polygonaceae family, dropping botanical distinctions like actinomorphic and calyx as fast as Madonna drops post-Guy Ritchie boyfriends, but I’d rather leave all botany urges behind and get back to chocolate and celebrating the dream of true love.

One important lesson I’ve learned after three years of blogging original recipes and building an on-line audience which insists I keep playing in the kitchen developing recipes that are not only gluten-free, but often dairy-free (and those voracious vegan readers- they’re sprouting up everywhere these days, not to mention the increasing number of devoted mothers writing in daily to request soy-free, and nut-free recipes for their food sensitive kiddos) is to experiment.

The challenge for a gluten-free (or wheat-free) vegan is how to create certain flourless and creamy recipes without eggs. The answer- in every vegan cookbook I’ve ever perused- is tofu. Vegan cooks love their tofu- tofu custards, tofu ice cream, tofu pumpkin pies, tofu stuffed lasagna. Tofu works. It lends an egg-free recipe body and silkiness. But what if- like so many of us ingredient challenged individuals- you are allergic to soy? What then? Then, my friend, tofu is no magic bullet. Tofu is the enemy. In fact, I am sorry to tell you, tofu sucks.

What if, I started to imagine, I melted Belgian dark chocolate and tweaked my pumpkin pie to turn it into a flourless chocolate cake? (See how my fevered little associative thinking brain works?) I could use pumpkin for the eggs/tofu. Why not?

So send me a kiss when you’ve baked this chocolaty confection. And most of all, be sure to kiss the one you love. Young and old. Seasoned and brand new. Straight, gay and in between. Celebrate love in all its generous forms this Valentine’s Day.

And don’t forget to love yourself.

Because that, Babycakes, is where the seed of true love begins to grow.

Vegan “Flourless” Chocolate Cake Recipe

By Karina Allrich August 2009. Febuary 2009.

You can make this cake batter in a Vita-Mix or a food processor, following the method explained in my recipe for Flourless Chocolate Cake (the recipe with eggs and butter). Easy. Easy.

First:

Brew 1/2 cup very hot, double strong coffee or espresso (decaf works); or use 2 rounded tablespoons of instant coffee in 1/2 cup freshly boiled water. Sweeten with stevia, to taste (or sugar).

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line the bottom of a 9-inch Springform pan with greased parchment paper.

Ingredients:

6 ounces unsweetened dark chocolate, broken into pieces

1 1/2 cups organic coconut milk or vanilla soy milk, gently heated

1 tablespoon bourbon vanilla

1 14-oz can organic pumpkin puree

1 1/4 cup organic golden brown sugar

1/2 cup GF buckwheat flour or sorghum flour

2 tablespoons tapioca or potato starch

1 tablespoon dry Ener-G Egg Replacer

1 teaspoon xanthan gum

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon or ginger

Instructions:

Place the chocolate pieces in the Vita-Mix (or a high speed blender container); add the hot coffee and heated hemp milk. Cover tightly- use caution with hot liquids. Turn on the mixer to high. Blend until chocolate pieces are melted. Add the vanilla extract, and pumpkin puree. Cover. Blend a minute.

Add the brown sugar, buckwheat flour, tapioca, egg replacer, xanthan gum, sea salt, baking powder, cinnamon or ginger. Cover. Blend on high for a minute. Turn it off (unplug it for safety if you have kids nearby). Open the top and using a plastic spatula scrape down the sides if any flour is sticking to the sides- if you’re using a food processor instead, do the same. Cover. Plug back in.

Blend for another minute or two until the batter is creamy and smooth.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan; scrape all the batter out with a smallish silicone spatula. Smooth the top evenly.

Bake in the center of the oven until the cake is firm- anywhere from 50 to 60 minutes. Here at almost 7,000 feet it baked in 57 minutes. Check the cake sooner if your experience indicates that flourless cakes and pies bake up quicker than 50 minutes; also, if your experience is that these types of recipes bake longer- check at 50 to 55 minutes; and follow your instincts. The center will be the last to cook- it shouldn’t be wiggly.Cool the cake on a wire rack. The top will collapse a bit- no worries. When the cake has cooled, cover and chill it at least two hours before serving. The longer the better.

Chilling creates a dense fudgy cake. I froze some pieces and tried one ice cold from the freezer- it tasted like a Fudgsicle.

Serve with chocolate sauce, a few ripe berries, a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, or a few fresh mint leaves. Serves 8 to 10.

We enjoy sugary treats in moderation, don’t we? Gluten-Free Goddess advises consuming no more than 2 tablespoons of sugar a day.

What is Diatomaceous Earth Used for in the Garden?

By Orgnatlife.com

The uses for diatomaceous earth are many, but in the garden diatomaceous earth can be used as an insecticide. ants-gardenDiatomaceous earth works to get rid of insects such as:

Aphids, Thrips, Ants, Mites, Earwigs, Bedbugs, Adult Flea Beetles, Cockroaches, Snails and Slugs

To the insects, the diatomaceous earth is a lethal dust with microscopic sharp edges that cut through the insect’s protective covering, causing them to dry out, thus killing them when they are either dusted with the diatomaceous earth or applied in a wet spray form.

de-microscopeOne of the benefits of diatomaceous earth for insect control is that the insects it helps to control have no way to build up a resistance to the diatomaceous earth, like with many of the chemical control insecticides.

How to Apply Diatomaceous Earth In The Garden

Most places where you can purchase diatomaceous earth will have complete directions on the proper application of the product. As with any pesticide, be sure to read the label thoroughly and follow the directions thereon! The directions will include how to properly apply the diatomaceous earth (DE) both in the garden and indoors for the control of many insects as well as forming a barrier of sorts against them.

black-ant-on-leafIn the garden diatomaceous earth may be applied as a dust with a dust applicator approved for such use; again it is of the utmost importance to wear a dust mask during application of the diatomaceous earth in this manner and leave the mask on until you have left the dusting area. Keep pets and children clear of the dusting area until the dust has settled.

In my opinion, it is better to apply the product in a wettable form to avoid the airborne dust particles problem, even then wearing a dust mask is a garden smart action to take. When using as a dust application, you will want to cover both the top and underside of all foliage with the dust. If it rains right after the dust application, it will need to be reapplied. A great time to do the dust application is right after a light rain or in the very early morning when the dew is upon the foliage as it helps the dust to stick well to the foliage.

de-2For doing the spray application of diatomaceous earth, the mix ratio is usually one (1) cup of diatomaceous earth per ½ gallon or two (2) cups per gallon of water. Keep the mix tank agitated or stir it often to keep the diatomaceous earth powder well mixed with the water. This mix may also be applied as a paint of sorts to trees and some shrubs.

This is truly an amazing product of nature for use in our gardens and around our homes. Don’t forget that it is the “Food Grade” of diatomaceous earth that we want for our gardens and home use.

SURPRISE!!! Battling Rattlesnakes at Bolsa Chica.

Photographer Lance Lawson was one of about two dozen photographers drawn to battling rattlesnakes along a trail at Bolsa Chica wetlands on Friday, March 17. (Photo courtesy of Lance Lawson)

By LAYLAN CONNELLY   March 19, 2017   Updated March 21, 2017 7:37 a.m.

Both males, they were intertwined in a dominance dance on a popular dirt trail along the Bolsa Chica wetlands in Huntington Beach on Friday afternoon, prompting onlookers to stop in their tracks and watch in awe at the National Geographic-worthy moment.

“It was pretty amazing. I’ve seen a lot of rattlesnakes, but never doing their ritual there,” said photographer Lance Lawson, who has been going to the wetlands for about 40 years.

Lawson was on the lookout for eagles and owls in the area, a popular spot for photographers looking to capture images of local wildlife near the northern end of the wetlands. He noticed two other photographers with their lenses focused on something interesting, so stopped to check it out.

And there they were, the snakes wrapping their slippery, slithering bodies around one another. Onlookers speculated the snakes were mating, but local expert Jason Magee, owner of OC Snake Removal in Laguna Niguel, said the photos show two males battling over dominance during breeding season.

“Likely there was an ovulating female nearby and the males picked up the scent and went into battle mode to determine who was more the dominant snake,” he said via e-mail. “The more dominant snake will be the breeding male. Very neat to see in the wild!”

Magee said the recent rains have made business busier than ever. During heavy downpours, he received a high volume of removal calls from rain pushing rattlesnakes out of their hibernation spots and into people’s homes, garages and yards.

“The rain has made habitat bloom and snakes’ prey abundant and healthy, in turn bringing more snakes out,” he wrote. “This year is gonna be a doozy.”

The two battling snakes continued for about 20 minutes, drawing the attention of about 20 other photographers who stopped to shoot.

“They were still real passive, they were not aggressive at all,” Lawson said.

At one point, another snake nonchalantly passed behind the intertwined duo. Magee said it was a San Diego Gopher Snake, based on the image.

Lawson said he stayed about 40 feet away to shoot the images. But when the snakes tired of the attention and ducked into nearby bushes, Lawson peeked down to see what they were up to. They continued to be engrossed in one another’s company.

“It was very unique, I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “It was kind of an eye-opener. I’ve gone there a lot, I’ve seen a couple snakes in the distance, but never on the trails.”

Rattlesnakes have a hemotoxic venom and are fairly docile and won’t strike without a reason. But they will aggressively defend themselves and can deliver a lethal bite if necessary. Most snake bites occur when snakes are undetected or being unprofessionally handled, according to Magee.

The California Poison Control System last year issued a reminder that rattlesnakes are more likely to be found along hiking trails with warm weather, and even baby rattlesnakes have dangerous venom. Most bites occur between April and October.

See all 6 photos click here Lawson

Tips for protecting against rattlesnakes

• Wear boots and long pants when hiking.

• Stay on trails when hiking, away from underbrush and tall weeds.

• Do not touch or disturb a snake, even if it appears dead.

• Carefully inspect logs or rocks before sitting on them.

• Never hike alone in remote areas.

• Teach children to respect snakes and to leave them alone.

NYC Restaurants Using Radiation Detectors On Fish From Pacific

Chefs Say So Far So Good, But Will Remain Vigilant

glowing-fishNEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Could powerful radiation from those reactors in Japan be tainting the fish you’re eating here at home? While the government says no, some restaurant owners aren’t taking any chances.
At Le Bernardin in Manhattan fish is a way of life.

“Well our fish is the freshest, of course, and it comes from the best,” owner Eric Ripert told CBS 2’s Kristin Thorne.

But celebrity owner Ripert said he’s making sure of it. He’s testing every single piece of fish that comes through his door for radiation.
“Some of our clients started asking us some questions and they were concerned,” Ripert said.

The concern is over radiation in the Pacific Ocean. A leak in one of the nuclear reactors in tsunami-ravaged Japan has spewed tons of radioactive material into the ocean. The Food & Drug Administration is testing all fish that comes into the United States and so far they say they haven’t found any contamination. Neither has Ripert.

“For a week now we are using it on all products that come to the restaurant and so far it’s absolutely zero radiation,” Ripert said.

So the radiation tester is really very easy to use. They take it and they run it along the surface of the fish.

There’s no radiation tester at the Lobster Place in Chelsea Market, but manager Davis Herron said he’s sure his fish is radiation-free. “We deal will suppliers that we trust and we know,” Herron said.

David Wallis of the West Village said he isn’t worried. Thorne caught up with him just as he was about to dig into his Chesapeake soft shell crab roll. “We’re good. I don’t think it’s gotten to the Chesapeake yet,” Wallis said.

Debbie Cersosimo of West Hartford, Conn., said she’s just going to avoid fish for a while. “You get enough radiation in everything else. You go through exams and stuff like that. No thanks,” she said.

While there’s no immediate concern for our food supply, all eyes are on Japan as the situation continues to unfold.

Chefs Thorne spoke to said if you’re concerned about your fish, you should ask a restaurant or grocery store staff where the fish came from.

California has eight monitoring stations for radiation in addition to the Environmental Protection Agency’s air-monitoring sites. The public will be updated about radiation levels, officials said.
My question is, as it should be for everyone. Is it “SAFE” to Eat the Fish from the “PACIFIC OCEAN”?

On a national level, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is collecting information on all food products regulated by the agency that are exported to the U.S. from Japan, the FDA said. This is being done so that the agency can evaluate whether these products will pose a risk to consumers in the future. Get ready now…–> Survival Equipment for the Family

The FDA is not concerned about the safety of food products from Japan that have already been distributed, the agency said. The FDA already screens imports and is monitoring for any trace of increased radiation in imported products.

World’s Largest Wave Was 62.3-Foot Surge in Atlantic: Scientists

wave-map

The largest wave ever recorded was a six-story monster in the North Atlantic Ocean, scientists have revealed.

A World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expert committee found data from a buoy between Iceland and the U.K.

Scientists attributed the 62.3-foot surge to a “very strong cold front, which produced winds of up to 43.8 knots [50.4 miles per hour] over the area” on Feb. 4, 2013.

The previous record of 59.96 feet was measured on December 8, 2007, also in the North Atlantic.

The WMO Commission for Climatology’s Extremes Evaluation Committee classified it as “the highest significant wave height as measured by a buoy.”

The committee consisted of scientists from Great Britain, Canada, the U.S. and Spain.

54 FT wave North Shore Oahu, Hawaii
54 FT wave North Shore Oahu, Hawaii

“This is the first time we have ever measured a wave of 19 meters. It is a remarkable record,” WMO Assistant Secretary-General Wenjian Zhang said. “It highlights the importance of meteorological and ocean observations and forecasts to ensure the safety of the global maritime industry and to protect the lives of crew and passengers on busy shipping lanes.”

Wave height is defined as the distance from the crest of one wave to the trough of the next. The highest waves typically occur in the North Atlantic, because wind circulation patterns and atmospheric pressure in winter leads to intense extra-tropical storms.

Waves are created by wind energy being transferred onto the water. Large waves occur when strong winds hit the ocean and then the water travels over large distances, growing in size.

Because of this, the area from the Grand Banks underwater plateaus off the Canadian coast around Newfoundland to south of Iceland and to the west coast of the U.K. are prime locations for giant waves.

West Coast officials, Obama: Don’t worry about radiation risk in U.S. By Elizabeth Landau, CNN March 18, 2011 8:38 a.m. EDT

(CNN) — Instead of worrying about the unlikely event of harmful radiation drifting from Japan, Californians should focus on preparing for earthquakes and other emergencies common in their own state, officials said.

Radiation from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan will dissipate over the more than 5,000 miles separating it from California, but eventually it may be detected in small, non-harmful amounts, said Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the state Department of Public Health.

WILL YOU SURVIVE–>

“We do not anticipate any amounts of radiation that will cause any health effects,” Backer said Thursday.

In Washington, President Barack Obama went further in telling Americans not to worry.

There has been no detection of elevated levels of radiation on the West Coast, and experts say there is no way to predict how long it would take for radiation drifts to cross the Pacific. Even if that happens, the amount may be too small to be detected, experts said.

ARE YOU PREPARED?–>

Because of the way the radiation would likely travel, it would take “days” to reach the United States, and would probably first be detected in Alaska.

“There’s no marker that we can follow to know if any minimal radiation reaches the West Coast,” Backer said.

Meanwhile, some drugstores in California are running out of potassium iodide, which prevents some of radioactive iodine’s harm to the thyroid. State health officials don’t know how many people are preventatively taking potassium iodide, but they strongly discourage taking the medicine. It carries its own side effects, especially for people who have allergies to iodine, shellfish or who have thyroid problems.

Potassium iodide is part of the planning in communities around nuclear power plants in the state of California, in case of emergency, but will not be necessary in the U.S. for radiation from Japan, Backer said.

Rather than going out and getting potassium iodide, Backer said, Californians should buy a three- to five-day supply of food and water so that when their earthquake-prone state has its next temblor, they can be self-sufficient.

California has eight monitoring stations for radiation in addition to the Environmental Protection Agency’s air-monitoring sites. The public will be updated about radiation levels, officials said.

And although radiation may get into ocean water drifting from Japan, there are no concerns about surfers or bathers at California’s beaches, said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The radiation will disperse so quickly that there will not be a significant increase of radioactive material in seafood either, Backer said. New Study Shows Ginger Is 10,000x Stronger Than Chemo (And Only Kills Cancer Cells)

New Study Shows Ginger Is 10,000x Stronger Than Chemo

(And Only Kills Cancer Cells)

turmeric-health-benefits
turmeric-health-benefits

Turmeric has widely been toted for its effect on cancer, but new research has shown that its cousin ginger is just as powerful. Not only that, an active compound in ginger has potentially been found to be more effective than some cancer medications at killing cancer. There is even preliminary evidence of some cancer medications being ineffective and actually accelerating the death of cancer patients.

ginger

The Power Of Ginger
One study, conducted by Georgia State University found that whole ginger extract was able to reduce the size of a prostate tumor by 56% in mice. In addition to its effect on cancer, ginger was also observed to reduce inflammation and supply the mice with life-enhancing antioxidants.

Another study published in PLoS found that one particular component in ginger known as 6-shogaol is superior to conventional cancer medication, namely chemotherapy, at targeting the root cause of breast cancer malignancy: breast cancer stem cells.

Sometimes referred to as ‘mother cells’, cancer stem cells are the cause of a wide range of cancers, not simply breast cancer. These ‘mother cells’ are responsible for creating the different ‘daughter’ cell types that makeup the tumor colony. While cancer stem cells only constitute .2 to 1% of the cell makeup of the tumor, they seem to be almost ‘immortal’.

What that means is, these cancer stem cells are able to self renew, they are capable of continuous differentiation, are resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic agents, and are capable of splitting off and forming new tumor colonies. The only way to fully ensure that your body is cancer free is to destroy the cancer stem cells within a tumor.

This new study found that the pungent constituent in ginger known as 6-shogaol was very active when it came to anti-cancer stem behavior. This constituent is produced when the root is either dried or cooked, to very common uses for ginger already. But there is something very specific about 6-shogaol that makes it superior to chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

Researchers found that these cancer-destroying effects occurred at concentrations that were non-toxic to non-cancer cells. That means that this particular component of ginger only killed cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone. This makes it very different from conventional cancer treatments that do not display that kind of selective cytotoxicity.

When it comes to breast cancer, 6-shogaol significantly affects the cell cycle, resulting in increased cancer cell death. It induces programmed cell death through the induction of autophagy. It also inhibits breast cancer spheroids (lumps) from forming. But that isn’t the only astounding thing about 6-shogaol.

This study also found, that in tests of the cancer drug taxol, it did not show the same level of effectiveness at destroying cancer stem cells and tumors as 6-shogaol. Even when the concentrations of taxol were increased, it was still found that 6-shogaol was 10,000 times more effective at killing cancer stem cells, stopping tumors from forming, and keeping healthy cells alive.

More research needs to be done to show how ‘modern cancer medicine’ is not as effective as natural remedies. We can not be making our bodies sick while trying to cure a disease, that is simply not enough anymore.

WARNING: The Threat of Fukushima is more evident today in 2016 (VIDEO 3)

Fukushima reaches US shores. #3

An energy map provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows the intensity of the tsunami in the Pacific Ocean caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake which struck Japan on March 11, 2011.
An energy map provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows the intensity of the tsunami in the Pacific Ocean caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake which struck Japan on March 11, 2011.

Radiation from Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster has apparently traveled across the Pacific.

Researchers reported that radioactive matter — in the form of an isotope known as cesium-134 — was collected in seawater samples from Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach in Oregon. The levels were extremely low, however, and don’t pose a threat to humans or the environment.

WILL YOU SURVIVE–>

In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a wave of tsunamis that caused colossal damage to Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The disaster released several radioactive isotopes — including the dangerous fission products of cesium-137 and iodine-131 — that contaminated the air and water. The ocean was later contaminated by the radiation.

ARE YOU PREPARED?–>

But cesium-134 is the fingerprint of Fukushima due to its short half-life of two years, meaning the level is cut in half every two years.

“It [cesium-134] disappears much more quickly,” said Dr. Kathryn A. Higley, the head of the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Oregon State University.

Cesium-137 has a 30-year half-life. Particles from Chernobyl, nuclear weapons tests, and discharge from other nuclear power plants are still detectable — in small, harmless amounts.

While this is the first time cesium-134 has been detected on US shores, Higley said “really tiny quantities” have previously been found in albacore tuna.

The Oregon samples were collected by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in January and February. Each sample measured 0.3 becquerels, a unit of radioactivity, per cubic meter of cesium-134 — significantly lower than the 50 million becquerels per cubic meter measured in Japan after the disaster.

But those levels have already dropped enough that Japanese fisheries have started to discuss reopening, said Higley.
Cesium-134 was first detected in North America off the shores off Canada in September 2015. One sockeye salmon from a lake in British Columbia tested positive in November, according to the Fukushima InFORM project. The level was “more than 1,000 times lower the action level set by Health Canada,” according to the Statesman Journal.

WHAT WILL YOU EAT? click here Get ready now…–> Survival Equipment for the Family

InFORM — a coalition of scientific and nonprofit organizations, including Woods Hole — has been tracking the course of the radiation plume across the Pacific. They suspect a rise in levels over the coming year, but Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer at Woods Hole, told the Statesman Journal that not even the peak would be a health concern.

Ultimately, the samples helped scientists determine that any more radiation from Fukushima would take between four and five years to reach the West Coast. By Lauren Tousignant December 9, 2016 | 3:01pm |

An energy map provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows the intensity of the tsunami in the Pacific Ocean caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake which struck Japan on March 11, 2011.

On 5 July 2012, the Japanese National Diet-appointed Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission (NAIIC) submitted its inquiry report to the Japanese Diet.[40] The Commission found the nuclear disaster was “manmade”, that the direct causes of the accident were all foreseeable prior to 11 March 2011. The report also found that the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was incapable of withstanding the earthquake and tsunami. TEPCO, the regulatory bodies (NISA and NSC) and the government body promoting the nuclear power industry (METI), all failed to correctly develop the most basic safety requirements—such as assessing the probability of damage, preparing for containing collateral damage from such a disaster, and developing evacuation plans for the public in the case of a serious radiation release. Meanwhile, the government-appointed Investigation Committee on the Accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations of Tokyo Electric Power Company submitted its final report to the Japanese government on 23 July 2012.[41] A separate study by Stanford researchers found that Japanese plants operated by the largest utility companies were particularly unprotected against potential tsunami.[6]

TEPCO admitted for the first time on 12 October 2012 that it had failed to take stronger measures to prevent disasters for fear of inviting lawsuits or protests against its nuclear plants.[7][8][9][10] There are no clear plans for decommissioning the plant, but the plant management estimate is thirty or forty years.[17] A frozen soil barrier is being constructed in order to prevent ongoing exposure of running groundwater with melted down nuclear fuel.[18]

glowing-fish

In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that the residents of the area who were evacuated were exposed to low amounts of radiation and that radiation-induced health impacts are likely to be low.[31][32] In particular, the 2013 WHO report predicts that for evacuated infant girls, their 0.75% pre-accident lifetime risk of developing thyroid cancer is calculated to be increased to 1.25% by being exposed to radioiodine, with the increase being slightly less for males.

The risks from a number of additional radiation-induced cancers are also expected to be elevated due to exposure caused by the other low boiling point fission products that were released by the safety failures. The single greatest increase is for thyroid cancer, but in total, an overall 1% higher lifetime risk of developing cancers of all types, is predicted for infant females, with the risk slightly lower for males, making both some of the most radiation-sensitive groups.[32] Along with those within the womb, which the WHO predicted, depending on their gender, to have the same elevations in risk as the infant groups.[33]

A screening program a year later in 2012 found that more than a third (36%) of children in Fukushima Prefecture have abnormal growths in their thyroid glands.[34] As of August 2013, there have been more than 40 children newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer and other cancers in Fukushima prefecture as a whole.

In 2015, the number of thyroid cancers or detections of developing thyroid cancers numbered 137.[35] However whether these incidences of cancer are elevated above the rate in un-contaminated areas and therefore were due to exposure to nuclear radiation is unknown at this stage.

caution-radiation

Data from the Chernobyl accident showed that an unmistakable rise in thyroid cancer rates following the disaster in 1986 only began after a cancer incubation period of 3–5 years,[36] however whether this data can be directly compared to the Fukushima nuclear disaster is still yet to be determined.[37]

A survey by the newspaper Mainichi Shimbun computed that of some 300,000 people who evacuated the area, approximately 1,600 deaths related to the evacuation conditions, such as living in temporary housing and hospital closures have occurred as of August 2013, a number comparable to the 1,599 deaths directly caused by the earthquake and tsunami in the Fukushima Prefecture in 2011. With the exact cause of the majority of these evacuation related deaths not being specified, as according to the municipalities, that would hinder application for condolence money compensation[38][39] by the relatives of the deceased.

Is Your Pony Rolling In Pain From Colic?

horse-chart

Gas Colic Herb Recipe:

1 tablespoon powdered Slippery Elm Bark
1 tablespoon powdered Marshmallow Root
1 cup of water
Add powdered Fennel Seed and Cinnamon as if you were seasoning the tea. Go with your intuition on how much to add.
Bring mixture to boil
Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes (add 5 minutes if herbs are not powdered)
Feed 1/2 cup to 1 cup over 1/4-1/2 cup whole oats (or some other natural non-processed food stuff your horse likes to eat) 2-3 times/day.

Gas colic is when gas builds up anywhere in the horse’s gastrointestinal tract. Causing factors can be stress, inadequate access to roughage, or rich pasture grass, poor parasite management, and other unknown factors.
Having experienced gas colic several times with horses and consulting with several veterinarians on the topic, I found the following treatments to be successful in alleviating the horse’s pain and allowing the gas to pass.

colic-in-horses1. Hook up your horse trailer and take your horse for a ride on a bumpy dirt road.
2. Energy healing – any modality works by focusing on the gas pocket and visualizing its movement out of the system.
3. Walk your horse.
4. Allow your horse to lie down quietly, as this can help move the gas further up the GI Tract (partner this with energy healing).
5. Brew Slippery Elm Bark, Marshmallow Root, Fennel Seed and Cinnamon together into a tea and then give it to your horse over whole oats (see recipe below for details). This coats the GI Tract and allows things to move.
6. Arnica Montana homeopathic for pain; muscle test your horse for exact dosage. Note: if the pain is too much (nothing seems to be helping and you do not see signs of improvement), then Banamine from your veterinarian is required to break the pain cycle.
7. Carbo Vegetables homeopathic for stomach bloating with gas; muscle test your horse for exact dosage.
The keys are to break the pain cycle and to get things flowing again in the GI Tract. The longer the colic goes on, the more likely you will need direct veterinary assistance. You know your horse best so trust your instincts and intuition. Always consult with your veterinarian on how to proceed.

These tips are meant as a complement to traditional veterinarian care, and not meant as replacement treatment or diagnosis.

Not sure if this is the Tundra or my Freezer

I have a freezer/refrigerator combo, with the freezer on top. Ice is building up on the top of the freezer door. What is causing this? How do I get it to stop?

The following reasons could be the culprit..

drain-pan-refer·        The drain from the freezer to the pan under the refrigerator is plugged up – most likely with ice. You can see this drain line behind the refrigerator. When the freezer goes through an automatic defrost this drain line is used to get the water out of the freezer. Try a thorough manual defrost to see if the line opens up – you will have quite a bit of water in the tray underneath and it might overflow. That is probably all you will have to do to fix this problem.

dollar-in-refer·        Place a dollar bill between the door and the freezer area, close the door and pull the bill out, if it comes out real easy you have a leaky gasket around the door area and should be changed.

·        Sometimes it’s the simple things that go unnoticed. There’s a high probability that someone else’s answer is right, however, another possibility is that somethings wrong with the flapper on your ice dispenser (assuming you have one) and the outside air is getting in at the dispenser and causing the problem. Open the door, look through the dispenser- if you see light, there’s your problem.

save-electric-on-referHere’s a few hints on how to keep your refrigerator working properly and saving energy. Clean the inside and outside of the gasket at least once a month.Check the overflow pan every 6 months. That should keep your frost free freezer, TUNDRA FREE.

So there it is… I think I might have all 3 issues…I took out the ice maker because it had some gummy greasy build up from the water and upon inspection of the gasket there are a few holes.  I was tired of black appliances anyhow. Time for change. Maybe a new Stainless steel Refrigerator …

Now choosing the right model for you. One with all the perks or one with very little to go wrong. Do I want a Smart refrigerator? Does it shop for me too? I really have to make sure it conserves energy.

ARE YOU LEAVING ON A JET PLANE AND LEAVING YOUR PETS BEHIND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Who will be taking care of your 4 legged family members during the holidays?

This is a tough one unless you have a good friend or you already have a sitter. I always say “Plan this one out good”. If your dogs are comfortable with their sitter, you will be at ease. It is very stressful for all involved, especially your pets. They don’t understand what is going on, unless you travel often.

Before you leave

christmas-dog-hat
A WOOF from me please…

Show the sitter where the pet food and treats are, and where the pets sleep.

Make sure you write a list of basic commands you use with your pet? Giving the sitter the right words to use is important for communication with your pets.

Give them a list with pet rules: Are they allowed on the furniture? When do pets get treats, and when should they be reprimanded?

Let the sitter know your pets habits. Like, do they hang inside the house or out or both. Or if your dog barks often, or whether barking is for “stranger danger” and what to do if the dog continues to bark.

Let your sitter know if any of your pets are aggressive and for what reason. (toys, food, treats or the mail delivery person)

Lay out on the counter any cleaning supplies they made need in case a pet has an accident in the house. You never know.

List: what time your pets need to be walked or are they “free rangers” out in the yard. Most important do you need to close the doggie door and limit their access if this is so.

List: Feeding times and how much food to give them.

If there is more than one pet to be fed, can they all eat together in a group or do they need to be separated. Most important do you need to do separation prior to mixing their food?

Make sure to leave emergency contact information for the pets. What is the name and number of the veterinarian? Is there an emergency animal clinic nearby? What should they do in case of an emergency.. Also leave a number of close friend or relative in the area.

Just make sure that your pet adores who ever may watch and care for your pets this Holiday Season.

HOME PEST CONTROL… Ants YIKES!!!

warning-pesticidesWhy Use Pesticides that Harm.

There are ways to repel your ants naturally.

Home Remedy to Kill Ants

You can make natural ant repellent and get rid of sugar ants and black ants without toxic chemicals that can hurt your pets or kids. A mixture of borax, sugar and flour kills both roaches and ants. The flour and sugar attract the insects, and the borax kills them. Cocoa powder is an effective substitute for the sugar.
Borax mixtures are also effective against silverfish. The boric acid content in borax damages the insects’ outer skeletons, causing them to dehydrate. More expensive commercial insecticides also use boric acid. Water lowers borax’s effectiveness, making it only suitable for dry locations.
While borax is less toxic than other insecticides, it is still mildly toxic. Users must ensure that children and pets do not have access to borax-based insect bait.black-ant-on-leaf

One of the benefits of diatomaceous earth for ant control is that the insects it helps to control have no way to build up a resistance to the diatomaceous earth, like with many of the chemical control insecticides

Being Thrown Under The Train… KARMA IS A BITCH

KARMA IS A BITCH…. hehehe

Karma (Sanskrit: कर्म; IPA: [ˈkərmə] ( listen); Pali: kamma) means action, work or deed;[1] it also refers to the spiritual principle of cause and effect where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect).[2] Good intent and good deed contribute to good karma and future happiness, while bad intent and bad deed contribute to bad karma and future suffering.[3][4] Karma is closely associated with the idea of rebirth in many schools of Asian religions.[5] In these schools, karma in the present affects one’s future in the current life, as well as the nature and quality of future lives – one’s saṃsāra.[6]

Cropping Puppy Ears… Right or Wrong? What is cropping?

ear-cropping-stylesCropping your dog or puppy ears: otoplasty

refers to the practice of surgically altering the shape of the dog’s external ear. The procedure may be done to correct congenital defects or damage from injury or disease. Historically, ears were cropped on protection and varmint dogs to prevent ears from being mauled during fights with prey or each other. Also, erect prick ears are said to be healthier because they allow air flow that?s blocked in hanging or drop ear conformation of dog breeds like Beagles.

Truthfully, the procedure rarely is required for the puppy’s health. Usually it’s done purely for cosmetic reasons to change a folded or hanging ear conformation to an erect look favored by dog show fanciers.
In the United States, ear cropping is historically performed on more than fifty breeds. These include Boston Terriers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, and Schnauzers to conform to the specific look of each breed standard.

Ear Cropping Surgery

The surgery is performed on eight to ten week old puppies (Bostons more typically at four to six months of age). These early age surgeries create stress that can predispose at risk puppies to health problems like parvo or even distemper. Ear cropping requires general anesthesia and the expertise of a veterinary surgeon familiar with individual breed standards.
Various breeds standards dictate the preferred shape of the ear. A show trim often looks longer and more extreme on a Great Dane destined for the show ring than for a pet. And breeds like the Bull Terrier or American Pit Bull Terrier calls for shorter ear cropping.
Splinting and other specialized ear-bandaging techniques help form the puppy’s ears for a week or more following the surgery, and will need to be monitored and changed as the ears heal.
Discomfort from the bandaging and wound can make healing a challenge since pups paw at bandages and shake heads to relieve the discomfort. Medication to relieve postoperative pain is recommended.

Is Ear Cropping Humane?

In recent years, the ethics of cosmetic ear cropping has been called into question both in the United States and abroad.
The American Kennel Club breed club standards for these breeds generally include descriptions of both the ideal cropped, and a natural ear conformation. Some dog show fanciers believe cropped dogs do more favorably in competition and continue to crop in order to succeed in the show ring. Show dogs in some other countries may be disqualified if the ears are cropped.
In November 2008 and then revised July 1999, the American Veterinary Medical Association passed the following policy: The AVMA opposes ear cropping and tail docking of dogs when done solely for cosmetic purposes. The AVMA encourages the elimination of ear cropping and tail docking from breed standards. Shortly thereafter, some veterinary stopped tail docking and ear cropping altogether.
The practice of surgically altering the conformation of a dog’s ear is expensive, painful, requires tedious owner follow up, and is not always successful. Changing the way ears look may also interfere with the dogs body language. If conformation dog shows are not in your plans, there’s no reason to put your puppy through ear cropping. Please consult with your veterinarian and consider your own motives before putting your puppy through this elective procedure.

Canine Acupressure Techniques to Promote Healing.

Maintaining a well-rounded training regime and providing incremental warm-up exercise before strenuous exercise are an important part of preventing injuries. But with any sport, the dog’s enthusiasm and natural drive can lead to incidental and repetitive injuries, despite our best prevention efforts. That’s why it’s best to formulate an approach to dealing with our dog’s injuries, before they happen.

With an injury that is severe and/or debilitating, a holistic veterinarian should be consulted immediately to diagnose the extent of the damage and prescribe treatment. Soft tissue injuries in particular can be deceiving, so have a veterinarian check your dog to be sure that no other issues or further tissue damage occurs. After the holistic vet has seen your dog and made the necessary recommendations or if the injury is a simple bruise or superficial abrasion, you can help expedite the healing process. Only the animal’s body can heal itself – but you can play a role in helping to create the physical “environment” in which healing can take place in a balanced, healthy manner.

Healing with acupressure

Acupressure, like acupuncture, is based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concepts that have helped heal animals and humans alike for more than 3,000 years. The basic principle underlying the healing process is that vital substances of the body nourish the body while moving harmoniously throughout the body. Two of the vital substances are chi (or qi), which is life-promoting energy, and blood, a nutrient-rich body fluid. In TCM, blood includes both the blood as identified in conventional medicine and other body fluids, such as synovial fluids in the joints or the nutrient-rich fluid within the spinal column.

Any injury can cause disruption in the flow of chi and blood. Using acupressure points, also called acupoints, you can help reestablish the flow of chi and blood through an injured area thus creating the healing environment. The movement of chi and blood through the damaged tissue helps distribute the nutrients the body needs to heal quickly and well.

Surrounding the Dragon

“Surrounding the Dragon” is an acupoint selection technique that is specifically for enhancing the flow of chi and blood to and through a particular location on the body. This technique is used often as an effective tool for tendon and ligament joint injuries as well as for chronic issues such as arthritis and tendonitis. The “Dragon” is the painful, raging injury, arthritic joint, or site of scar tissue formation, which blocks the flow of chi and blood. Applying gentle pressure to specific acupoints surrounding the “offended” area stimulates the flow of the healing chi and blood while removing toxins and nourishing the tissues.everybody-loves-a-massageWhen Surrounding the Dragon, we stimulate acupoints located near – but not too close to – the insulted area because you do not want to “spank the crying baby.” This phrase is used in Chinese medicine to mean that you do not want to cause any further hurt when the area is already painful.  READ MORE

WHAT DOES “A CUP OF JOE” MEAN TO YOU?

WHAT DOES “A CUP OF JOE” MEAN TO YOU?

Are You A Consumer Or Connoisseur of Great Health Benefits?

What is the best cup of coffee you have ever had?

by: http://www.orgnatlife.com

Well that could be a long list or a very short one. The bigger BOXED coffee shops as Star$$$$’s really does not appeal to me. Boring, run of the mill. It’s the smaller shops that actually make a good cup of coffee, or maybe it’s the atmosphere that makes it taste so good. Either way the atmosphere is comfy and inviting. Big oversized chairs to relax in and read a book or chat with others while you sip that wonderful drink.. Sounds like home.

Speaking of terminology.. Lord give me a break. If one more establishment comes up with another tongue twisting drink that takes 5 minutes to order and another 20 minutes to make, I will have to stop altogether. What ever happen to the good Old days when a cup of Joe was just that a cup of joe?

Well we are about to find out… When espresso came to America and where did espresso come from originally? Italy you say…  NO.

Espresso first appeared in Italy in the early 20th century. Coffee had already become a necessity to Italian daily life thanks to North African Muslims who brought it through Venice’s ports during the Renaissance. We owe much of the mystique coffee to Venetian merchants who charged wealthy patrons hefty sums to try out this newfangled drink when the first coffeehouses opened in the 1640’s.

Fast forward about 200 years and we find business man Luigi Bezzera tinkering away with this coffee pot to find a way to make coffee faster. In 1903, Bezzera owned a manufacturing business and was frustrated by the time-consuming process of brewing his own coffee at home each morning.

He soon found that adding steam pressure to the machine not only cut down on the brewing process but also produced a stronger, more robust cup of coffee. This new quick-brew process drew out the coffee bean’s best qualities but somehow avoided over extraction.

Bezzera immediately named his invention the “Fast Coffee Machine”. Since the word ‘espresso’ means fast in Italian, the name of the beverage the machine produced was quickly shortened to what we know today.

Unfortunately, Bezzera wasn’t as talented at marketing and sales as he was at engineering. In 1905, another businessman named Desidero Pavoni purchased the machine’s rights from Bezzera and had it patented.

Nowadays you don’t have to travel to Italy to experience Bezzera’s handiwork. The recent boom in espresso’s popularity has brought this Italian treat to every mall and street corner. Next time you decide to pick one up, take a moment to think about the more than 100 years of history inside your cup.

BREWING…

There are several ways to brew the black magic. Easy, put the water in and walk away to grinding, tampering, brewing and mixing the syrups to get that special taste.

For myself I threw out the Drip coffee maker and opted for the french press carafe. To have a rich full bodied aroma wafting through the house is like a beautiful melody running through your mind over and over.

I still say the best was the Percolator, back in the day. I can remember my grandma making coffee on the stove. Watching the coffee going up into the glass bubble on top and back down again, becoming darker in color each time it reached the bubble. Then the electric percolator my mom used was the highlight of the 60’s. Same technique just plug it in and watch it go.. No more standing by the stove and waiting for that perfect cup of coffee.

The Automatic drip machine came into the light. Wow everyone thought this was the BOMB.. Yes it gave you your pot of coffee in 5 minutes. But where was that rich wafting aroma? Gone with the 5 minute cup.

Then we step up to the home brew station for espresso. Ohh, what magic we have in our possession. Soon every house had an espresso machine big and small.

The latest is the One Cup Brew machine. Bringing you pre-made espresso in 50 flavors with no hassle or mess. Every day is a coffee rainbow.

Have fun and try a different blend and technique today…. You might be surprised at the difference a “Technique” actually makes.

Don’t forget about the health benefits of coffee. Black Coffee, not that candy coated crud or Super Hype added extract.

Please!!! Regular black coffee is just fine for me.

You’re helping her? “I’m going to kill you”

Good Samaritan shot while aiding a dying woman.

The Washington Post   By Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

Daniel Wesley pulled on a pair of gloves and searched for the woman’s bullet wounds, looking for the best place to apply pressure.

The 17-year-old didn’t have his EMT certification yet, but in the critical moments after authorities say April Peck was shot by her boyfriend on Sunday, Wesley was all she had.

Before the teen could do more, Peck’s boyfriend came roaring back in a Chevy Malibu.

“If you help her, I’m going to kill you,” he said, according to Wesley’s mother, who spoke to the Advocate, a newspaper based in Baton Rouge.

The boyfriend, Terrell Walker, rammed the car into Wesley, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. The car pushed him into the side of an arriving ambulance, shattering his arm and snapping his femur, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his family.

Injured, Wesley crawled to the median. Investigators say Walker pointed his gun and shot the teen twice.

Walker also fired at the ambulance’s crew, but didn’t hit them, before getting in the car and peeling off.

good-smaritan Video still of Daniel Wesley, who was shot trying to help a woman.

First responder’s ultimately sorted out the injured. Peck, a 30-year-old mother of two, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died. Watch the video

Wesley, a senior at Central High School, was taken there, too, and went through two surgeries in three days.

[A good Samaritan helped a woman who was being beaten in a parking lot. Now he’s dead.]

The paramedics weren’t injured. Mike Chustz, a spokesman for East Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services, said they were barely out of their ambulance when the Malibu crushed Wesley into it. They had been flagged down by a motorist about an injured woman in the street and initially thought they were on their way to help an injured pedestrian.

“It was totally unexpected,” Chustz told The Washington Post. “They all did whatever they could to seek shelter to try to put some distance between them.”

Walker was gone when deputies arrived, but investigators initiated a manhunt.

They saw him walking on Blue Bonnet Boulevard near Interstate 10 and approached.

According to CBS affiliate WAFB, the deputies ordered Walker to put his hands up. He pulled out a handgun instead.

They “exchanged gunfire striking the suspect who was later pronounced dead,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Louisiana State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Walker, a felon who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 1992 and to possession of a firearm by a felon 14 years later, had a tumultuous relationship with Peck, according to the Advocate. Walker was frequently jealous and often violent, family members told the newspaper. But the couple’s separations never lasted.

[A ‘Good Samaritan’ saw a deputy being attacked by a Florida man so he fatally shot the assailant]

Peck had gotten a restraining order against him two weeks ago, the newspaper reported, but they continued to see each other. He used her Chevy Malibu to commute to his job and had picked her up from work a half-hour before shooting her and hurling her into the street.

Wesley found her there a little later. He was headed home after leaving the Mall of Louisiana.

Investigators combing the wreckage of a charter plane that crashed in Colombia found a sixth survivor under the aircraft’s fuselage Tuesday morning, officials said. Video from the scene showed rescuers carrying a man on a stretcher away from the crash site.

At least 75 people were killed in the deadly crash, Medellin Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said. Passengers on the charter flight included players from the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense, who were on their way to Colombia to compete in the first leg of the South American Cup finals. More than 20 journalists were also aboard the aircraft.

Colombia plane crash: 75 dead, 6th survivor found

Rescuers search the wreckage of the charter plane Tuesday in mountains outside Medellin, Columbia. The Avro RJ85 was en route Monday night from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to Medellin when it crashed near Rionegro, Colombia, civil aviation officials said. Nine crew members were also on board.

The plane declared an emergency between the municipalities of La Ceja and La Union, according to Colombian aviation officials. The crash occurred in an area called Cerro El Gordo near Medellin, officials said.

At least three soccer players, two crew members and one journalist survived, authorities said. Among them: defender Alan Luciano Ruschel. In an Instagram post, Ruschel’s wife said he was hospitalized in stable condition. “We are praying for everyone who has not yet been rescued, and for their families,” Amanda Ruschel wrote. “It is a complicated and difficult situation. Only God can give us strength.”

What happened?
The plane took off from Bolivia’s Viru Viru International Airport at 6:18 p.m. local time, according to air controller Manuel Palamas.

Medical staff members wait for survivors of the crashed plane Tuesday at a hospital near Medellin. Officials didn’t specify what happened to the plane but said the wounded were being transported to medical centers.

Images of the crash show what appear to be damaged parts of the plane. The aviation department’s statement said that passengers belonged to the Chapecoense team. Tattered debris emblazoned with the club’s logo was photographed at the crash site. READ MORE AT CNN

Infant Ejected During Crash in Arkansas Found Safe in Storm Drain

It’s a story of survival that’s amazed even seasoned firefighters — an infant ejected during a car crash ends up in a storm drain, 25-feet away. She is found alive, reaching up to rescuers and with only a scratch on her forehead. That’s the scene that unfolded Friday night along Interstate 30 in Texarkana, Arkansas after a truck apparently sideswiped a car, officials told CNN affiliate KSLA.

The family vehicle flipped over and the 8-month old girl was ejected. Survivors looked for her but could not find her.

Rescuers arrived and scoured the area and zeroed in on a patch of hay in the median after hearing a sound.

To their amazement, searchers found the infant inside a storm drain — more than two dozen feet from the roadway.

“The baby … was sitting up and looking up at us waiting for us to pull her out,” Texarkana firefighter Josh Moore said.

“Some kind of divine intervention”?

Authorities think she rolled down a hill to the drain. It took three firefighters to get her out. She had a minor injury.

“There had to be some kind of divine intervention for her to end up being OK,” Moore told the affiliate.

The child was taken to a hospital along with four other people in the car. All have been released except for the driver who is still recovering.

“So many times, we go out and things aren’t OK…and just during the holidays here to have a positive just feels good,” fellow rescuer Texarkana Fire Capt. Charlie Smith said.

Police confirmed to KSLA the child was not properly restrained in the car seat at the time of the accident and that the car seat was also not properly installed, but no citation was issued.

The driver of the truck was cited for an improper and unsafe lane change.

READ MORE Articles… Are You Making This Common Pet Food Storage Mistake?

Why should you cook for your pets? by Dr. Karen Becker, VM

Why should you cook for your pets? by Dr. Karen Becker, VM

Feeding your pets a healthy diet is simple and easy.

It’s like cooking for yourself except your leaving out the salt and a few other ingredients. Whats great about cooking your pets meals is you know what’s  exactly in there. Your using beef, chicken, turkey and lamb fresh from the store. No processed precooked meat in a can.

Human Grade Food: It’s Not Just for Humans
Unless the commercial dog or cat food you’re buying is made with human-grade ingredients, you are feeding your pet rendered protein. Rendered meat is essentially pieces and parts of this animal or that — there’s really no telling. This low quality protein is less than desirable nutrition for your pet. You don’t know what country the meat came from or if this meat came from sick, road kill or euthanized animals. . . This can be an issue since other countries do not have the same regulations for human consumption.

Unfortunately, commercial pet food made entirely with human-grade ingredients is usually at least three times as expensive as food containing crude protein. This is one of the main reasons for switching your pet to a homemade diet. You have complete control over what goes into your dog’s or cat’s mouth, and you can insure you’re feeding high quality, human-grade protein and not the crude, pieces-and-parts variety.

Apple Cider Vinegar is believed to help the Liver dissolve poisonous matter, like to much alcohol. It also balances the pH levels and tops up any deficiency in minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron, which your alcohol soaked body is craving.

When you wake up in the morning just make a delicious cocktail using 16 ounces of water, 2 teaspoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar, and if you need a sweetener, use organic honey, 100% maple syrup, or molasses to taste. If you are diabetic, use the sweet substitute stevia. I recommend you use only distilled water. This “Bragg Healthy Cocktail” is designed to flush out wastes that are clogging the organs of elimination. Make sure you use raw, organic vinegar, never dead, distilled vinegar because the natural enzymes, minerals, and nutrients are destroyed in the distilling process. Any vinegar that is clear and has no “mother” (the strand-like substance in the bottom of the bottle) has no nutritional value. Natural raw vinegar should be pungent, with a rich, brownish color and a visible “mother.”

ENJOY your Party Recovery….

Planning ahead…Summer is right around the corner!!!

Chef Sherrie Angel’s Pumpkin Dinner Rolls

Chef Sherrie Angel’s Pumpkin Dinner Rolls

Pumpkin Rolls for Thanksgiving and Christmas… Yummy

Chef Sherrie Angel “Slam Dunks” Thanksgiving this year with her Pumpkin Dinner Rolls. Creamy smooth texture that melts in your mouth. Bite after bite you can taste every spice layered across your pallet correctly.

Let’s not forget about the star of the day. Juicy seasoned to perfection turkey with chicken sausage gravy & all the sides to complete the meal.

I made my dough in the bread maker, but i have added instructions for making it by hand.

Risen twice and then baked to perfection. But we will give the directions for old school mixing in a bowl.

Chef Sherrie Angel… Rocks the Kitchen with Pumpkin Rolls

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup warm Whole Milk
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1/4 cup salted Butter
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 can (15 oz) Canned Pumpkin
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups Flour

DIRECTIONS

Place milk , 1 teaspoon honey and whisk together. Sprinkle yeast on top, set to the side for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl combine and mix together the remaining ingredients. Add the milk mixture and start mixing. Dough will be wet. If the dough is extremely wet you can add some flour, but the dough should remain sticky. Don’t add to much flour at once, a little at a time until you can handle to dough.

After you have the dough mixed together remove from the bowl to a floured surface so you can knead the dough. Knead for 15 minutes.

Lightly butter a bowl and place the dough inside and cover with Saran Wrap. Allow the dough to rise. It should be doubled in size. About 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Remove dough from bowl. You can use a pastry mat / board, greased surface or parchment paper to use for your work area.

Divide the dough into 4 pieces so it’s easier to handle. Cut the dough into 24 pieces. Grease or butter your hands and roll the dough inward into balls. Place the pieces into a greased pan or pans. Depending on what you have handy.

Cover pans with a kitchen towel and allow the rolls to rise to double or triple the size. About 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

About 30 minutes before the rolls are finished rising turn the oven on to 375 degrees F.

Bake the rolls for 25 – 30 minutes or until golden.

Remove from the oven. Brush the tops of rolls with butter. Let the rolls cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Remove rolls and place on wire rack. These rolls can be served warm or at room temperature.

If needed you can make these a day ahead, so you can concentrate on all the other dinner items.
